Northern Michigan Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

Chateau / Country House, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5-6)

This guest house is at the center of our 21 acre Gentlemen's ranch, one mile south of Suttons Bay and 1/2 mile from the Bay. The address for our location is 1624 South West Bayshore Drive (which is M-22), Suttons Bay While there is not a water view unless you are on top one of our hills, the setting is an idyllic location with panoramic valley and hill views. This house has a warm natural all wood interior with beautiful artwork, yet all the modern amenities such as wifi and satellite TV with multiple movie channels.

The grounds are professionally landscaped and maintained by the Landscape Architect owner.

There is a large open area that includes a wrap-around leather couch and a loft with two beds along with a separate bedroom with a queen-size bed with an exceptional quality pillow-top mattress. There is plenty of room to park any toys (campers, boats, trailers) right on the property. The owners have a 26 foot motorboat and other water toys, so arrangements could be made for their use. If there is a need to stall your horses, or if you want to ride a horse or two, those arrangements can be made as well.

On the property is a large barn, a small barn (both for horses) along with indoor and outdoor riding arenas. Attached to the indoor riding arena is a viewing area with a pool table, wifi, cable, bathroom, laundry and additional sleeping area in another loft if it is needed.

At night, there is a firepit area to warm up on the cold Northern Michigan nights and we are far enough away from any city so that the panaromic star views are incredible.

We are only 1/2 mile away from the Suttons Bay to Traverse City trail and you could ride bikes/horses snowshoe/hike/cross-country ski in any direction from here and see wonderful water vistas and orchard/hill/valley views.

We are 30 minutes away from the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and the Homestead Resort that has skiing with hills that border on Lake Michigan.

As always, if you pay for six days, you get the 7th day free.

Keywords: Northern Michigan, Suttons Bay, Horse Farm boarding (weekly/monthly) Indoor and Outdoor Riding Arenas, riding trials, Sailing/Power-boat excursions available

About Debbie Slocombe

Jeff and Debbie live on the property with their daughter Samara. Jeff is an attorney and Debbie is a Landscape Architect who designed the beautiful grounds and maintains them as well. They enjoy the life up North with the opportunity to raise, ride and show horses.

Debbie Slocombe purchased this chateau / country house in 2002

Why Debbie Slocombe chose Northern Michigan

Jeff and Debbie have been coming to the Traverse City/Suttons Bay all of their lives for vacations and decided to move to the area in 1999. They love the location of Suttons Bay because it has all the activities of Traverse City, yet the idyllic lifestyle of a Village just a short distance away.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Our home is just a five minute walk to the beach or a one mile bike ride/hike to Suttons Bay. The TART trail (Rails to Trails Suttons Bay to Traverse City) makes it a 13 mile bike ride to Traverse City.

You can bring your own bikes or borrow some of ours to ride into the Village for a nice breakfast/lunch/dinner.

Because we are on 21 acres surrounded by much more open area, you will not be constricted to a small area.

Perfect weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were looking for a quiet little place to get away for a long weekend. Jeff and Debbie have the perfect spot. Quiet, quaint, and charming, this VRBO spot has just enough of what one needs to escape with some extras like beautiful scenery, beautiful horses to see...we lucked out by visiting five days after their new baby horse "Will" was born!!! It is a short drive to many wineries and shopping. And it is just 15 minutes from TC. Loved our weekend getaway! Thanks Debbie and Jeff!

A great place close to town but with an out in the country feel

  • 5 of 5

The place is spacious and open.

There is a main living room with a small kitchen, topped by a loft that can fit several kids, and a separate bedroom with a super comfortable bed.

The place has many large windows letting in lots of light yet the place keeps your privacy.

It is super close to town, especially to the wonderful Hop Lot Brewing, as well as the many attractions in and around Suttons Bay.

Clean and Cozy

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here with our 4 year old boy for 2 nights over the Christmas holidays.

The property is idyllic, the cottage is very clean and well-appointed. There is a Stickley style desk that is pleasant to work at if needed. Several thoughtful details such as extra blankets, ground coffee / tea bags and instant oatmeal were provided. The space is well organized and made for a very comfortable 2 nights. In the mornings, you can look out the main bedroom window and see horses in pasture.

There was a big snow storm during our second night in the guesthouse. We felt warm and secure. The driveway was plowed once in the night, before we awoke, and again that morning before we departed.

The owners were away while we were there, but communication with Debbie was good and easy. She sent us a warning about the impending storm, which was thoughtful.

This spot is a real gem and a solid value. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Lovely horse-boarding setting. Single cottage. Convenient driving to area sights.

  • 4 of 5

Owners Debbie and Jeff live on this large site, but do not hover. Very near Suttons Bay. If you enjoy the feeling of having your own reasonably-priced, get-away place, you'll love it here. Wish I could interact with the horses on site, but petting or feeding the horses is discouraged. Sleeping space for six, which includes the main bedroom and a loft. Cooking light meals OK; a larger fridge would be nice. Wrap-around front room couch should be more comfortable. Cable TV and Wi-Fi. Big parking lot, near the cottage. The entire location is beautifully landscaped, and includes a patio area with BBQ.

Owner's Response: I saw three issues with your review. The first is concern for a larger refrigerator. We grappled with just that issue and in the end determined that a larger dorm refrigerator was all that would fit in the area. We have a full size refrigerator for your exclusive use in the viewing area if needed. We hoped that would make up for it. In relation to the horses, we apologize that first-time guests can not have unsupervised contact with the horses, but some of our horses have special diets and all horses can be unpredictable and are concerned for our guests safety. We would always be happy to help you with contact with the horses and as you get to know them and which ones are no problem, you could have much more interaction. We even have a multi-stay guest (whom we just adore being here) who has our permission to get a horse out of the pasture and ride unsupervised. Finally, in relation to the couch, we don't know what you mean that it should be more comfortable. We would certainly do what is necessary to make it right with our guests as we did with the mattress, but the couch already has a very soft leather and is we thought very comfy. Anyway, we will keep asking about the couch and if we need to change it, we certainly will. Thank you for your comments. Jeff and Debbie
