Visitors are often surprised and amazed at the private and peaceful garden they find behind the secure gates of this North Portland Sanctuary. A pond, outdoor jacuzzi, and a fire pit create a park-like atmosphere right outside the door! Inside you will find a fireplace, full kitchen, washer/dryer, whole-house speaker system, wi-fi... all the amenities of home, and perhaps more! Linens, laundry soap, basic bath supplies, and general kitchen oil/spice and cookware are been provided.
I had the pleasure of staying at the Sanctuary from mid July to mid August to help my daughter prepare for her wedding. She lives in North Portland so the location was very convenient, not only to my daughter, but to Kenton shops and restaurants. The property is also a short walk to the max with a 15 minute trip downtown. I have a small dog and we were very comfortable at the sanctuary. Sitting outside with coffee or a book was delightful for both of us. Sheila has taken great care to decorate and share her books and treasures with her guests. Every day I saw something new to make me smile. Thank you for sharing this darling gem of a property with me.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Portland Sanctuary. There was everything available to make our week stay comfortable. The kitchen was very complete for cooking, and we so enjoyed the outdoor space in the back garden.
It was like staying in a private home, rather than a vacation rental. Sheila always got back to me in a timely fashion with answers to questions. As it is in the neighborhood where my son and wife and new granddaughter live, I can see us staying there in the future.
We drove to Portland from CA for a wedding with our two dogs and the minute we set foot inside this gem of a sanctuary we knew we were going to have a great trip. This is a lovely home; the garden is so peaceful it was almost too easy to sit out there and forego the great sights of Portland! We did both actually-- it was very easy to hop on the MAXX a few blocks away and head into downtown--it probably took 30 minutes from the house to Powell's bookstore. We also loved the neighborhood of Kenton, where the home is located. There are several good cafes, restaurants (we loved Cafe PoShines de la Soul) & a wonderful bakery as well as a farmer's market, a post office, a library, a bank and a park--we could have spent another week here easily just exploring this charming neighborhood.
I never did meet the owner of the house but I talked to her on the phone; I found her to be very caring and responsive to our needs. Her library is also fantastic and the home is put together in a very mindful, caring way that is ultimately reflected in the garden. The hot tub was clean and we used it one morning while it was raining--there's an overhand that shields the rain so it's like having an outdoor room. It was warm enough (May) that we were able to eat all of our meals at home outside, whether it was sunny or raining. Very good vibes here! I'd love to come back again and stay longer next time.
I meant to write this review months ago. My husband and I (and pets) spent August and September of last year at Sheila's garden sanctuary. It was a wonderful place to stay with pets - the yard is completely fenced, the lush landscape makes the yard private yet you're close to everything. We thoroughly enjoyed the covered patio, koi pond and outside speakers. It truly was a garden sanctuary.
We enjoyed walking the neighborhood and found lots of good places to eat within walking distance.
The house had everything we needed, we hope it's available for our next trip to Portland!
My family (husband, daughter) loved this home tucked away in a very private setting in a great location. We spent most of our time sightseeing, and this was a wonderful landing spot at the end of the day. This was our first trip to Portland, and we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay! The hot tub was a little green while we were there, so we didn't use it, but everything else was just wonderful.
It was as though we weren't really in the city at all. This property had lovely gardens, and the home had wonderful energy. We loved the way she decorated, and everything you could want was available in the kitchen. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and was happy that it was convenient to freeway access as well. Our only slightly negative comment is that the hot tub appeared cloudy to us so we didn't use it this time. We'd definitely choose this property again, and appreciate everything the owner did to make the property feel comfortable and welcoming.
This beautiful hide-away is in an unassuming residential area of north Portland, not far from the airport, Portland International Raceway, and several golf courses. It is close to the Max lines, very near a ZipCar location, and just ten minutes heading south will take you to downtown Portland, or north to Jantzen Beach and Vancouver, WA.
