Description

Fort Greene House Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedrooms 2 Bathrooms Sleeps 7

This is a super sunny house on a landmark block in the heart of Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Built in the 1830s, it was the first house on the block. With three exposures (south, east and west) there is glowing sunlight in every room throughout the day.

Please note: we have two cats, so if you have allergies please let us know so we can make arrangements to have them board elsewhere; otherwise they will stay in the house (they are very shy and will likely hide anyway with guests in the house!).

The house sleeps 7 comfortably: a queen bed in the master bedroom, two twins in the “children’s” room, and a double bed in the third bedroom. The TV room has a daybed which converts easily to a twin bed.

The house features two contiguous parlors, one with floor-to-ceiling windows looking onto the tree-lined street. The second parlor has a stereo (CD player and turntable with hundreds of selections of music) and many books, with a door to the side garden.

There is an eat-in kitchen with a table that can seat 6 comfortably. There is also a formal dining room that can seat up to 12 comfortably. The kitchen could best be described as 'country' with open shelves, two doors to the garden and a big window over a farm sink.

In addition there are two full baths, one with an antique claw-foot tub with a hand-held shower. The other bathroom is en suite to the double bedroom and has a stand-up shower.

With many doors to the garden and windows throughout the house, it has a light, airy feel that many have said makes it feel like a beach house or being in California. The garden can be reached from the 2nd parlor, the dining room as well as the kitchen and has a table and chairs and BBQ. There's also a small herb garden right outside the kitchen steps.

There's wonderful art throughout the house including a unique 'salon style' wall in the dining room. Other features include four decorative marble fireplaces, a baby grand piano, a flat screen TV and DVD player, washer-dryer and 3 bikes (2 adult and one child).

The house is located near every major subway line (the closest subway is only 3 blocks away). In addition, it's an easy walk to the famous Brooklyn Flea (flea market, 2 blocks away), the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), the oldest opera house in the country, Barclay's Center (for concerts and Nets basketball games), a Saturday morning farmer's market, countless restaurants, and unique neighborhood shops.

Finally, about 3 blocks from our house, is lovely Fort Greene Park, designed by Olmstead and Vaux (who also designed Central Park) with playgrounds, tennis courts, and a running trail. Brooklyn's famous Prospect Park is a bike ride or longer walk (about 15 minutes) away.

Please note: we have two cats, so if you have allergies please let us know so we can make arrangements to have them board elsewhere; otherwise they will stay in the house (they are very shy and will likely hide anyway with guests in the house!).

Warm and inviting townhouse in great neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

Six of us (4 adults and 2 children) just spent a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend at Cecilia and John's Brooklyn townhouse. There were comfortable beds for all of us and great games and toys for our 5 and 7 year old grandchildren. The only drawback was that there was no shower in the second bathroom but it did have a big claw foot tub so it was a minor inconvenience for those who insist on a shower.

We were 11 for Thanksgiving dinner and the dining room accomodated us all perfectly with plenty of dishes, cutlery and glasses. There is also lots of living area so we never felt on top of each other. It was too cold for us to use the back garden but in spring and summer it would be lovely.

The neighborhood is quiet but within a block of restaurants, coffee shops and subway into the City. All in all a great experience. I would come back anytime.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for this nice review. We love that your family enjoyed a holiday here and that the children made use of the toys. For future renters: it is true that the second bathroom does not have a stand up shower, but it does have a hand held "European style" shower.

This apartment is great; it can handle a family easily or two couples. It is incredibly spacious.

A fantastic place to spend several days or longer: very comfortable, spacious so it is relaxing, great kitchen so you don't have to be on the go all the time. The neighborhood is quiet but convenient to everything you need on vacation. The owner is very accommodating, helpful and understanding. I would recommend it to anyone.

Excellent accomodation in Brooklyn

  • 5 of 5

The house is an authentic, typical 3-storey red-brick-house (3rd floor is hired out seperately), it probably dates back to the late 1800s. It is very well kept, with a small but charming garden in the backyard. The interiors are very convenient and comfortable, but also very chic and with lots of fine and tasteful objects and details, belonging to obviously artloving owners. The house and especially the large and bright kitchen is perfectly equipped.

The neighbourhood is quiet during nighttime, but vibrant and pleasant during daytime and appeared completely safe to us.

We quickly felt very much at home and like real "newyorkians" here during our 10-days-trip to New York. Due to the public transport nearby (subway stations are in walking distance), it was an ideal base for us to discover Manhattan - although we got to know, that there is a lot to bee seen and done in Brooklyn, too!

Really Charming and Inviting. Wonderfully comfortable and so pretty

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented this property for 5 days over the Thanksgiving Holiday in 2015. My two daughters live in the neighborhood and one has a new baby so we were hosting the Thanksgiving Dinner. The space was just wonderful and so inviting. Plenty of room in the dining room for everyone and great fun to cook in this happy kitchen. The weather was warm and we even spent some time in their pretty back garden. The whole place was just wonderfully light filled and so charming. We only had the two of us sleeping there but there would have been plenty of space for a larger family. The master bedroom is just huge and wonderfully quiet at night. Great sleeping. Just a happy pretty street and easy to walk to nice restaurants and stores and, of course, the park at Fort Greene.

The owners could not have been nicer to us making sure that we would be able to have a lovely experience and to get the days that we wanted. Everything was just as it had been described only maybe even nicer. Definitely clean and well maintained. What a happy time. Would highly recommend this place and would definitely rent it again.

Map

Fort Greene is a unique part of Brooklyn with historic architecture along leafy, tree-lined streets, and great parks. But there is also the thrill of the new with a thriving restaurant scene, that includes not just some of Brooklyn's, but some of New York City's finest restaurants. You certainly don't have travel to Manhattan to have fun!

But if you do, it is just a short hop across the Manhattan or Brooklyn Bridge or 30 minutes to midtown Manhattan via any one of 6 subway lines. It is also close to Prospect Park, Prospect Park Zoo, Brooklyn Museum, and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, which makes it a great spot for a family vacation.

You can also walk 8 blocks to Atlantic Avenue Station and take a train to a Long Island beach for the day. Or just stay in Fort Greene and enjoy a picnic in Fort Greene park. You can also experience BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music). With three live venues and one cinema (first run and film festivals), it is home to some of the best theater, opera and dance staged in the city.

On Saturday mornings there's an excellent farmer's market with local produce and groceries three blocks from the house.

And, there's a Mediterranean restaurant right on our corner that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, so you don't have to go very far for delicious food!
