In Bend (The Deschutes House) is within 30 minutes of at least 6 great fly fishing waters (Deschutes, Metolius, Fall River, Crooked River, Crane Prairie, Lake Billy Chinook)....paddle boating (Tumalo Creek Kayak Co.), skiing (cross country and downhill) snowshoeing, snowmobiling, biking (a list of little known trails with the rental), hiking, hunting, mountaineering, metal detecting (white's Spectrum Metal Detector available from owner (ask)), desert to the East.... West 10,000 lakes (mink lake basin) area, century drive and high lakes trails. East of Bend is the Central Oregon High Desert....history read "Rube Longs" book "The Oregon Desert".(Available at River Inn library) Just a few miles to the southwest is Silver Lake and a cowboy restaurant called the "Cowboy Dinner Tree" you need reservations but don't miss this little known and locals favorite spot. Just north of this is 100 acres of very large sand dunes and a forest of Douglas Fir trees called, "The Lost Forest". I believe it is where the "blue bucket Mine" was found by the "Herron wagon train in 1845. Steven Meeks....guided the often lost wagon train from Fort Boise thru Central Oregon, instead of the Oregon Trail route. Read the book "Meeks cutoff- trail 1845 (available at River Inn library). The house has high-speed internet with a 45 inch Sony flat screen TV connected to HD local television as well as "NetFlix" and Amazon "Prime" with a guest subscription to both.

We have gone through many sources to try to make this home suitable to as wide an array of people as possible.

We want you to stay at our home. Something not quite right...talk to us, we are easy, and want you for clients. As professional Inn keepers, we will do our best to make you comfortable and happy and give you good value we are willing to give you a discount and an additional stay at our Inn on the Umpqua river. If you wish contact me, I will do our best to give you a discount for your stay.

The city of Bend has noise ordinances so please be a good neighbor and bring any noise inside and hold it down after 10PM. You will find contacts to call posted in the residence should a problem happen and our neighbors have been contacted and notified of our number should things get out of hand. House sleeps 8. We are a licensed rental by the City of Bend. Tested smoke alarms in every room and carbon mono alarms in rooms with gas appliances.

Vacation rentals are often someone's primary residence and rented out in their absence... (not our case) but it has articles of books and knick nacks that hopefully you will enjoy as we do. Most closets and drawers are free of clutter but some first aid stuff may remain. The refrigerator is empties of everything the last guest brought and a control of dated sauces that may be there are regularly checked. This is not a motel room devoid of everything but where we live at times when we are on vacation.

About Margaret L. Wardrope

Margaret, is a graduate of Art from Witworth College in Spokane Washington. She grew up in the Treasure (Boise) valley in southwestern Idaho. The oldest daughter of a potato and onion farmer. Her father was a B17 pilot and flew maximum missions from England to Germany during the war. His airplane "lucky lady" never lost a man. Margaret has a keen sense of decor and is always complemented about the interior design at our Inn in Elkton Oregon on the Umpqua river near what was once one of the earliest outposts of the Hudson Bay Company....Fort Umpqua. It is a wonderful valley with a pristine river and nice people. Margaret is a wonderful singer and we both sing at the local Church in Elkton. Margaret does not know a stranger and she will see to it that you are comfortable. I (Jim) am married to Margaret and we hope to meet you real soon. I grew up in Bend went to High School here and have fished and hunted this area all my life. If you want to fly fish or catch the 30 lb. German Browns in the Deschutes River. I can show you how and where....Fly Fishing the Central Oregon Salmon Fly hatch on either the Deschutes or the Metolius Rivers is a lifetime memory.

There is no better skiing than Mt. Bachelor in the Cascades just 30 minutes from the house. The cross country skiing is awesome. Music in the park and at the Les Schwab Ampha Theatre. This house is central to Bend and close to the Old mill district and only minutes from Sparrow Bakery...the best bakery in Bend. Try their "Ocean" rolls...a buttery croissant dough with a touch of cinnamon twist and sugar crust....wonderful....pick them up between 7 and 9 A.M., or they will be gone.

Margaret L. Wardrope purchased this house in 1990

Why Margaret L. Wardrope chose Bend

This is a comfortable house close to most of Bend. It was built by Pete Wick...A builder of homes in central oregon for many years with the company Marken and Wick. I bought a house from them in 1970 and when Pete's personal house came up for sale I purchased it knowing it would be well built and a quality piece of work.

What makes this house unique

Close to many of Bend unique venues including the Old Mill District and Cinemas, Les Schwabs Ampa-Theatre, Bends best Bakery " Sparrow Bakery"...try their "Ocean Rolls" be there before 9 am or they will be out for the day...Several shopping centers are close to the house and downtown is only minutes away. Mt. Bachelor is a mere 28 minute drive from the house, and we have a dry sauna to warm up in after your day in the Cascades. I have lived in Bend most of my life and can give you tips on things to do and places to go including fishing. . Comfortable area, off the main traffic and quiet neighborhood. Renters will also receive a 3 night stay for the price of 2 at our Inn in Elkton, Oregon. www.RiverInnElkton.com

Notes:
Here is a link to the Central Oregon Event Calendar for planning your trip. http://visitcentraloregon.com/calendar-of-events/ The house does not have central Air....It will be added in 2016. The downstairs area is very cool on even the hottest summer day and evening. Bend is high altitude and often the few days of hot daytime weather is balanced by very cool nights. The house is well insulated and will retain the cool air into most hot days and evening. I

Great House!

  • 5 of 5

This place was great! Very clean, accommodating for our group and felt like home. A great location with a wonderful burrito place a few blocks away. Very accessible location in the heart of Bend.

Love Bend, Oregon, but not this house

  • 1 of 5

This home was within driving range of everything, not walking. The lower level bedroom was actually a moldy musty basement with newer finishes. (I had to sleep on a sofa) There was no place to eat together or play games, no dining table. We would not recommend

Loved this house!

Very nice and roomy home. Excellent location, peaceful neighbourhood. The house was clean and full of character - I can't decide which room I liked the best! Will most definitely try to stay here the next time we are in town.

The house was extremely cluttered.

  • 1 of 5

I say the reviews before I booked and it said clean but quirky. I thought quirky was fine. The house is an older home along with the appliances. We felt that the people still live there because so much of their personal stuff like photo albums and just stuff were still there. There were cabinets overflowing with old knick knacks and old books, etc. my husband tried to look at some and they were filthy. My personal opinion, a vacation rental should be decorated simply so renters have room to put their stuff and not be afraid of loosing it in the mass clutter. We left a note for the owners of some off the things we thought would make their place more desirable and cleaner. The neighborhood is not the best either. The first night walking back from the college summer league baseball game ( which was very fun), we encountered a drunken father yelling at his teenage kid. Every other word was f..... . A couple days later a couple across the street were sceaming at each other outside and the gal was yelling about him selling drugs. The police showed up. Definitely not a place we would stay again.

Owner's Response: We in fact do live here, the items left in the house are hardly what we would call clutter and it is clean. My wife and I had just had new carpet installed upstairs and some dust may have settled but mostly closets and drawers are emptied and made for the guests stay. I thought I covered this adequately in the description. Vacation rentals are usually someones home that gets rented out during their absence. It is not like a motel room with a totally empty living area, which, I think, this guest was expecting. Most vacation rentals are rented while the owner is away. which is our case. As to the neighborhood, much to be said about centralized location and being able to walk home from a ball game or the old mill district and amphi-theatre. Try that in Oakland California. I have owned the house for nearly 20 years and it was primary residence for 15 years, and I have never seen this in the neighborhood, but anything is possible. I must say teenagers sometimes bring out the worst and there are idiots at every turn in life, including, (yes, "this neighborhood"). I have a friend on the police force and have asked them to look at the public record and tell me what was going on. She reports no activity during this clients stay. In their defense, She did say, perhaps someone was driving by and saw something???? If you read our other reviews you will find most clients are extremely happy with the house. We are professional Inn owners and hire very qualified cleaners that take the job serious. Since we, the owners, cleaned this time we really think this reviewer is expecting too much from a vacation rental....she needs a motel room with only a Gideon bible (I use to be president of the local chapter of Gideon's) and know something about empty motel drawers. Most people don't bring their own knick nacs. I feel there is adequate room for even an extended stay with us....but you judge for your self...I will post current drawer photos on deschutesvacationrental dot com...see for your self.

Clean well cared for house

  • 4 of 5

This house was very clean and worked great for our family of four! The layout is a little funky—one of the bedrooms was down two small flights of stairs without a bathroom and one of the bathrooms was up a half flight of stairs by itself. The main bathroom had been nicely remodeled. The kitchen was old but everything worked well. It was about 5 minutes to drive to downtown Bend and there was a nice playground about a block away. We had a great stay!
