Enjoy relaxing in our spacious, modern, family home located in five acres of tropical gardens complete with pool, yoga deck, additional full outdoor kitchen, and wood-fired pizza oven. The house is minutes from the town of Montezuma, with its beaches, waterfalls, restaurants, artisans, yoga, surfing, and many other activities.
The property has many features which will appeal to an environmentally sensitive traveler: solar powered hot water heater; solar powered pump for the swimming pool; in-ground captivation tanks to store thousands of gallons of collected rainwater to water the garden into the dry season.
**New in 2015 - almost 500 ft squared yoga deck hidden in the jungle. Ideal for your own practice or for hosting small retreats.**
Many will also appreciate some of the property's features, designed to overcome some of the challenges of living in this part of the world: battery backup which activates automatically in the event of a power failure, providing the ground floor level with electricity; a well on the property supplies all the water in the home making the visitor immune to any water shortages that might occur at the dry times of year.
You will regularly see a variety of wildlife in the garden which includes: Howler monkeys, White-Faced Capuchin monkeys, anteaters, kinkajous, parrots, Mot-mots and many other birds. The garden has a large variety of fruit trees including: bananas, guayabas, mangos, passion fruit, star fruit and a variety of citrus fruit. Help yourself to the fruit and the fresh eggs from our chickens.
This would be an excellent vacation home for a large family group, yoga retreat group, couples traveling together or two or more families traveling together. There are 2 main dining areas. The table in the house seats 6-8 and the table in the outdoor kitchen seats 8-10. Both kitchens have full-size, high-end appliances and are very well equipped for cooking and entertaining.
The 2-story home has 4 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms (2 of which are ensuite). The fifth bedroom (ensuite) is in a separate cottage by the pool. All bedrooms have air conditioning, screens and ceiling fans. There are 2 kingsize beds, 2 queen size beds and a large bedroom with bunk beds and a pull-out trundle bed. One of the queen size beds also has a full size pull-out trundle bed. The upstairs living room has a large flat screen TV. One of the kingsize bedrooms also has a flat screen TV.
This is our home for part of the year and as such would be a real home away from home for you. The kitchen is very well equipped with much more than you normally find in a rental house and there are lots of books, games, and toys for children of all ages.
There is a caretaker on site as well as a gardener and part-time housekeeper to ensure that your stay is comfortable and memorable.
In addition to the house and pool house described above there is a small, one bedroom guest house on the property which is not available for rent. At different times we, the owners, might be in residence there although it is separate to the main house, pool etc.

After falling in love with Costa Rica and the Southern Nicoya Peninsula we took an opportunity to make a big life change and live here for some of the year. To satisfy our travel bug we are looking to rent our house, so we can hit the road.
Stuart Millar purchased this house in 2011
We chose to live and build our home here because of the climate, the wildlife, the relaxed pace of life and the beauty of the mountains and beaches.
In addition to the wildlife, the hiking, and the walking on the beach, we enjoy getting to know the great mix of people from all over the world that live near us and the town of Montezuma.
We were a family of 8 adults and one 16 month old baby boy. The home was great for our family. We enjoyed being away from the business and noise of a resort and town. We enjoyed the casualness and openness of the home. Our family cooked meals in most of the week and enjoyed the outdoor kitchen, and pizza oven. Renting a car is a must, and we enjoyed excursions into Montezums, surfing, zip lining, and snorkeling. We had a great week and would recommend this to a family looking for a jungle get away to experience something different!
The panoramic mountain views, beautiful house, expertly landscaped grounds, and proximity to Montezuma's beaches and activities make this a superior vacation site.
Our family of four awoke daily to the sound of Howler monkeys in the distance, and enjoyed our coffee and tea on the lovely veranda before making breakfast in the outdoor rancho. Our kids loved walking the property, on the prowl for exotic creatures. - and there are many to be found, from iguanas, parrots, spider monkeys and pisotes. The large pool was a hit as well!
The property is just minutes away by car to the town of Montezuma, where you'll find a number of good restaurants. We took surfing lessons as well as a boat tour to Tortuga Island, where we did some snorkeling before relaxing on the beach.
We have not yet done any horseback riding on the beach but plan to do so when we come back in the spring.
Everything on the property looked to be well maintained, and we felt very secure staying there, thanks to Carlos, the live-in caretaker. And my girls got to practice their Spanish with Lionel, the gardener.
I would definitely recommend this site for families and adventure travelers - anyone, really, who would appreciate this property's - and Montezuma's - charms.
My only (sort of) negative comment is that the VRBO pictures don't accurately reflect how gorgeous this place really is!
We had the priveledge of staying with the owners of this beautiful Costa Rican estate back in August ('11), and we are so thankful that we did! Of the entire month we spent traveling around the country as a family of five (two adults, three young children -- 4, 7, 9), this time near Montezume was definitely some of the most memorable. The property includes a large, beautiful main house with plenty of space, a great laundry room, four bedrooms (I believe), and at least 3 bathrooms -- all very nice and clean. Really nice quality build! But wait-- that is by no means "it!" There are more accommodations on site... Including an adorable little cottage by the pool (includes a jungle-view bedroom and nice bathroom with beautiful tilework and two sinks / shower, and a hammock on the 'porch'), a high-end outdoor kitchen with this incredible, large wooden table and chairs handcrafted in Costs Rica from one tree, an infinity pool with salt water, perfect for cooling off during the hot mid-day sun or even at night (lit up) -- great for your skin (!), another cottage near the pool (fully equipped with kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, internet, and such) -- and last but not least, some property to wander around on. Wow! Tropical foliage abounds. We saw white-faced capuchin monkeys as well as howler monkeys (cute baby included)-- such an enriching experience for both us and the kids. I will always remember our time here. You will love it -- it is serene and surrounded by the wildlife and nature of Costa Rica that you imagine!
Last note -- the house is down a dirt road which seems to require 4-wheel drive... a bit off the beaten path, but not SO far that you get nervous. :) The awesome little beach town of Montezuma, with its laid-back, artistic atmosphere and funky little restaurants and shops, is just a few minutes drive from this property. Oh and the beaches! So nice... wow! (again). No regrets at all for these memories of a lifetime.
We stayed in Montezuma recently for five weeks and spent some of this time at this property which I have to say exceeded all expectations. This is a large, well appointed family house....comfortable for those who like high end comfort but without sacrificing the local influence and feel of living in Costa Rica. The cooking facilities are amazing and having the option of cooking outdoors and near the pool is genius!! And my husband was very excited about the chickens...
The grounds are beautiful and worth exploring and we enjoy the local community of Pura Vida Road. When we return with our extended family next year we will not hesitate to stay here....the property is suitable for smaller children but quite ideal for teenagers and their friends. For families traveling it will make a difference that this home is lived in and has been designed with a large family in mind.
And Stuart and Jen could not be more welcoming and helpful.
Note although we didn't tick the box as suitable for tourists without a car, the local cabs are so cheap and convenient that it's not really essential to have a car - the locals often walk from this area into Montezuma and take a cab or hitchhike back. We would recommend a Jeep and definitely at least four wheel drive - or for a bit more fun the ATVs that you can rent in Montezuma.
