How many places can say they have a sloth living on their property year round? Well we do and it is visible from the balcony or shower in a tree next to the house on most days.
Other than the sloth, we're also visited regularly by toucans, aracaris, anteaters, coatis, monkeys, hummingbirds, iguanas, etc etc.
Nevermind that we only have 2 reviews on homeaway because we're new to this site, House of Jupiter has 40 different 5 star reviews on airb&b.
House of Jupiter is a beautiful spacious home in the jungle covered mountains above Dominical. We pride ourselves on being eco friendly and carbon neutral. The house is solar powered (but also still tied to the grid so we never run out of electricity), very energy efficient, receive our water from a nearby spring and the majority of the furniture was made from locally and sustainably harvested bamboo. The house has a very fresh and open feel with 14 foot cathedral ceilings covered in bamboo and large windows everywhere with lots of new screens to keep the bugs out and let in the breeze off of the pacific ocean. We're located at a perfect 1000 feet elevation with incredible views and in pure jungle so the temperatures aren't as hot than if at sea level, but go out in the sun by the pool and it is plenty hot.
The main bathroom has a giant concrete bathtub and shower that has a jungle view and sometimes you can see toucans, a sloth, or monkeys while bathing. Fully furnished kitchen and dining area. Giant terrace/balcony that is a great place to relax or do yoga (3 yoga matts included) with lots of seating and 2 oversized hammocks. A sitting area. Living room with 50" tv, satellite tv, blueray player and the ever important WIFI.
The house sits on 6 acres which is a combination of jungle and bananas and fruit trees. The closest neighbor is separated by several acres of jungle and you cannot see them or hear them. We also have an organic vegetable garden, pineapples, avocados, coffee, and many types of fruit for you to enjoy when they're in season.
This listing is for a very large villa which is the entire upstairs of the house and is larger than most homes. It sleeps 7 comfortably and is everything that you see in the photos including swimming pool, patio, bbq grill, 3 bedrooms, kitchen and dining area, living room, 1.5 bathrooms, sitting area, and a massive balcony with lots of seating and large hammocks.
We created this listing to make a more affordable option for small groups where you are renting the entire top half of the home and paying per guest. Prices are calculated similar to a hotel (seasonal base price for 2 people and only $25 for each additional guest). It's a much cheaper option instead of paying a flat rate for an entire 5 bedroom home and space for 11 people. But if you have a group that is 8 or larger, you will need to rent the entire home which we have a separate listing for on airbnb. Renting the entire home adds the smaller and more basic downstairs to your accommodations, including another kitchen, 1.5 bathrooms, and 2 bedrooms.
** If you rent this villa, we will not rent the downstairs to other groups. We never rent to 2 different groups at the same time.
Bed linens, towels, cooler, yoga matts, toilet paper, paper towels, dishes, coffee, sugar, and cooking basics.
Interaction with guest:
I can arrange rental cars, tours/activities, surf lessons, etc and do not need a credit card. Just give me a full name and the dates you want and I'll make reservations for you. If you need anything, I am more than happy to help with any planning. There are several beautiful well known waterfalls in the area but I also know of several that are still secret and private to the rest of the world that I can give you a map to. If you won't have a car, we could possibly arrange for me to pick you up from the airport or your previous destination and bring you to the house for a fee (probably half of what a taxi or shuttle would charge you).
The neighborhood overview:
A private community up in the jungle covered mountains near Dominical with incredible mountain and ocean views. Only 5.2 miles from the beach but at over 1000 ft elevation so the temperatures are more comfortable and fresh feeling than the beach. Just a short drive from 2 different beaches. One, a famous touristy surfing beach and the other a completely natural deserted beach where you can walk for miles sometimes and not see people. Our little piece of paradise is surrounded by national forest preserve so we are visited by many animals. You will feel like you are a million miles from the rest of the world but the beach town of Dominical and many activities are only a 12 to 15 minute drive away.
I am more that willing to meet our guest in Dominical and give them a ride (free of charge) to the house or if you're in a car you can follow me to the house. Also, I can pick you up at the airport and/or take you to the airport. Then you can rent a car just for the days you are in the area. Just ask me about it and we can agree on a price in advance.
As with most places in Costa Rica that aren't on a paved highway, 4x4 is highly suggested mainly because of the ground clearance but it isn't absolutely necessary during the dry season. Front wheel drive car can manage just fine but I would not recommend a rear wheel drive car because of the lack of traction on the hills. Rainy season I only suggest 4x4's because rental companies use poor quality tires that are not all-terrain.
The town of Dominical and the little pueblo of Baru at the entrance to our community has bus stops and a regular and dependable bus system that can take you all over costa rica for a couple dollars. Taxis are also availabe to and from the house.
Jeff and Wendy were great hosts and the house is beautiful and clean. You definitely need a 4 x 4 to access the home since the house is located 10 minutes off the main road up a dirt road. It is a beautiful location tucked away in the mountains and we saw many birds especially some hard to spot Tucans in the trees outside. For our family the location was a little too far from the beach even though it was only a 10-15 minute car ride from town. Once you got use to going up and down the mountain it really wasn't a bad ride, we would've just preferred to be closer to town since some of us got up earlier than others and it was difficult to just jump in the car and go. However in January being in the mountains there are less bugs than at the beach and it's definitely much cooler at night.
The internet is spotty but that is typical of being in the mountains of Costa Rica but if you don't need to get on all the time then it shouldn't be an issue. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need including spices and oil which is a big bonus if you want to cook. Having a washer and dryer in the house is a also a plus, so don't bring a lot of clothes.
We really enjoyed laying around on the hammocks looking at the really pretty views, the sunrise in the morning is stunning. You definitely don't have to worry about theft being in the mountains so you can leave whatever you want in the house with no worries, we left our money and passports and had no issues.
Jeff answered all my questions before we arrived and gave us a GPS to use with all his favorite spots loaded into it. He also had snorkel gear, a cooler and beach towels available for our use.
One thing to note is that the owners live downstairs and while they do stay out of your way and you hardly know that they are there, they are on property. We would recommend this house for a group of people looking to be away from everything or two families traveling together.
