Frequently Asked Questions:
Animals: Yes, there are all kinds of animals that like to roam around the forest. While you don't see most of them, you have to be someone who is comfortable in that true rustic, outdoorsy environment. This is not Disney World. We have seen snakes (non-poisonous), mice, squirrels, otters, beavers, skunks and a raccoon. You are on a secluded parcel of land in the Ottawa National Forest. While we haven't seen any moose, deer or bear actually near the cabin, it's not an impossibility. We do our absolute best to keep all the critters away and out of the cabin. Fall is the biggest challenge as the little critters, including mice, are looking for a warm place to stay the winter months. We do our best to keep the critters at bay.
Bathroom: There is one bathroom on the main floor. It has indoor plumbing and a toilet, shower/tub with a sink.
Bedrooms: Main floor: 1 double bed
Upstairs Loft: 2 sets of twin bed bunks
Blinds: 2 pop-up blinds can can added to the property at no additional charge. Baiting is an additional $80/blind. Baiting will will be done for 2 weeks prior to your arrival.
Boat: We provide a small rowboat with oars. (Sorry, no motor-- feel free to bring your own)
Boat launch: There is a rustic gravel boat launch on the northeast side of the lake.
Cell phone service: Cell phone service is generally unreliable in the Upper Peninsula when you travel outside of Marquette and Escanaba. Rarely has anyone been able to easily accept or make calls at Marten Lake. Still, texting is generally a good option.
Dock: There is a small, basic dock on the lake, in front of the Marten Lake Cottage.
Firepit: Yes, there is a firepit in the backyard!
Fishing: With only 3 cabins on the lake, Northern Pike and Perch are plentiful. Ice fishing is wonderful. you can use tip-ups and watch them from the warmth of the cabin. Guests have also reported a good variety of pan fish.
Grill: There is a charcoal grill available for your use at the cottage.
Grocery Shopping: A good 20 minutes to the closest convenience store in Sidnaw (www.sidnaw.org/mini) and a good hour to a full grocery store in L'Anse or Iron River.
Hunting/target practice: Yes, you may hunt the 40 acres and use the land for target practice. You are expected to clean up after yourself, hunt within the State laws, including acquiring a hunting license, plus properly manage any animals that you hunt. Please be aware of adjoining property owners.
Kitchen: We have basic kitchen supplies, including a coffee maker.
Lighting: We have a generator with propane lights. We ask our guests to please be conservative with the lighting in consideration of the generator. Keep in mind that the propane generated lights are generally not as strong or bright as your standard electricity in the city.
Pets: Pets are welcome here for a flat fee.
Road: The road to the cabin is a nice gravel road. It is not paved.
Swimming: While you technically can swim in Marten Lake, it is muddy and weedy. It would not be considered traditional beach swimming by any means. Still, for the adventurous spirit, anything is possible. :-)
View: There is a 3 sided view of Marten Lake, and the only place that you can't see the water is when you turn and look at the driveway/woods. It's a great place with a peaceful view.
Water: We have a basic well at the cottage. Well water is pumped into the kitchen sink and bathroom via the generator.

Truly get away from it all!
seclusion, there are only 3 cabins on the lake.
A great place off the grid and secluded but very comfortable. We arrived about 5pm and the view was amazing. We are from the Metro Detroit area and this is a good 10 hour drive for us and we would consider it again in the future. They say it has a simple well but the water was good. We had lots of fun fishing, and playing around on the property the days we made it back early enough. There were plenty of vhs there to watch in the evenings, when power was being run for showers and such. I would recommend using permethrin on your clothing prior to going if you go during insect season. This place is far off the beaten path and the insect zero in on you when the sun goes down. I will say that the cabin was clearly marked when we went so dont worry about the directions they give you. DO NOT use gps to get out or there. Always start from Sidnaw. I am having a hard time actually trying to limit the great things about this place down to a coherent message without appearing overly rambling. It was a great place to stay with plenty of amenities and so very private seeming.
Cabin outfitted with whatever you need, assuming what you need most is to be out of cell and Internet range. Owners and caretaker super nice. Especially fun to row out on the lake, whether you catch anything or not. Would only tweak the directions on the website to mention two long driveways to other houses you will see after boat launch (was a little hard to find the first time).
We had a very enjoyable hunting trip this past weekend and hope to return again next season. The cabin was perfect for our group of four, and we were able to hunt Rabbit, Grouse, Woodcock, and Duck! The only things I could see changing is the mattresses in the loft our adding some foam to them, but was still nice for a cabin, also some fly strips in the fall (the pesky buggers were looking for somewhere warm). Thanks so much for sharing this piece of beauty.
The Marten Lake cabin was the perfect place for us. We visit the UP every year and stay some place different (we were looking for that "perfect spot" for us). We think we have found our spot for an annual visit. Description was accurate and it was great to be off the grid, but still have the convenience of running water when needed via the generator. We are so thankful to have found this place and Freshwater Vacation Rentals were great to deal with, we probably won't rent from anyone else again for our Michigan vacations.!
We had an amazing vacation. The cabin was very nice and the land was amazing. Can't wait to go back!
