This house is perfect for an extended family who wants to immerse themselves in nature, hike on conservation trails through woods and along the marsh, gaze at the incredible bird life, and have total peace and silence. The house is beautifully decorated by the artist/owner. 5 minute drive to downtown Wellfleet.
This property has been in our family for 75 years since my grandparents, artists and writers, moved to Wellfleet in the 1930s. The house was recently renovated, with a new kitchen. I am an artist and teacher. I have decorated the house and cottage with paintings that reflect the landscape and history of Cape Cod.
The house is filled with a sense of beauty and history. The house was built in 1800 by a Wellfleet sea captain who rowed his boat ashore to reach the house. The area is completely private, surrounded by a pine forest and edged by Black Fish Marsh.
The house is uniquely situated in the Fox Island Conservation Park. The area is teaming with birds and wildlife, perfect for nature lovers. Conservation trails can be reached within feet by walking out the front door. The quiet, soft breezes and intense light are remarkable. The evening light fills the house with an orange glow.
From the moment we stepped out of the car and entered the property through the exotically fragrant box hedge we knew we had arrived in a special place. Perched near the edge of a protected salt marsh estuary, the Captain’s House and grounds is a perfect combination of serene location, appropriate design with a subtle aesthetic, and gorgeous sunsets washing in over the marsh filtered through the wooded grounds. There are well placed seating areas throughout the property upon which to relax and soak in the lush ecosystem and, better still, there’s a network of serene nature trails intersecting the property that wind through the hills and pine forests and out onto the marsh.
The house itself is a lovely combination of the antique and the modern: wide pine plank floors, curious nooks and crannies to discover, yet bright, clean and all beautifully curated with a veritable wunderkammern of unique artworks, old books and other objects to constantly surprise and delight the eye. Every inch of the place has been lovingly tended with an aesthetic that only gradually reveals itself as you experience the house and grounds over a number of days. We were a large group (9) so we rented both houses. Both properties were well stocked, comfortable and clean, and Sasha is a responsive host who was available whenever we had a question to ask. Highly Recommended.
This house may be a little off the beaten path but it was the perfect destination for our extended family. The interior was extremely clean and fresh, and the decor and furnishings very very nice. Easy access to the beaches we love, and the trails around the conservation area made for perfect walks.
