About JoAnne Broadbent
My husband and I live in Illinois and have traveled to the Adirondacks to spend a week with extended family for 36 years. Our children and their cousins have memories of canoe trips, High Peaks hikes, picking raspberries, and songs and skits around the campfire. They continue to come to gather from Texas, Utah, California, and Dubai. They now have their own families and want to continue making memories and strengthening relationships.
JoAnne Broadbent purchased this Cottage in 2012
Why JoAnne Broadbent chose Lake Clear
This property gives us waterfront to send off canoes and to play. It is on 9 acres, so we can sing and play without disturbing others. It has a comfortable place to sleep and a wonderful huge screened in porch for gathering.
What makes this Cottage unique
This property is close to canoe routes and High Peaks hiking trails, near cultural activities and attractions, and a short drive from Saranac Lake and Lake Placid for shopping and restaurants. At the same time you are surrounded by forests and across the water from quiet state land.

Peaceful and Well Situated
My husband and I spent a week at this lovely home/cottage in the woods. It was peaceful, serene, the fishing was terrific, and the birding was even better. The cottage was very clean, welcoming, and well outfitted for outdoor fun and lovely evenings on the back porch. We highly recommend the property if you seek solitude, natural beauty and the outdoors, but enjoy the comforts of home.
The property is well located/situated to nearby town of Saranac, and excellent hiking options and opportunites. It is also convenient to the "VIC" at Paul Smith College, which provides ample opportunities to explore the varied ecosystems that make up the Adirondack region. We highly recommend any and all of the hiking at the VIC.
A truly peaceful and rewarding get-away. Enjoy! We did!
We wanted to spend quality time with our children during the summer. We booked this cottage for July 2017. Our plan was just to relax and that is just what we did!!!! What a beautiful home. The cottage is located in a very private setting yet close enough to all the attractions. Lots and lots of fish to catch. Our favorite place was the enclosed porch BEAUTIFUL and so comfortable. We fell in love with this place!!! Highly recommend
Thank you so much for the positive review. I'm glad you enjoyed it, as we do. Thank you also for the beautiful picture which I will put on HomeAway. Just looking at it help me relax. Please return for another week sometime.
Secluded home in the midst of the Adirondacks
We found the home to be very nicely furnished with everything we possibly needed, including plenty of linens, kitchenware, and a washer dryer. The home was located in an area that was convenient to nearby towns and hiking trails. The large screened in porch was a nice place to hang out and relax when we weren't out and about. There is a private dock with 2 kayaks, 1 canoe, a stand up paddleboard and paddleboat (we didn't use the paddleboat I find them to be way too slow), and a "boating equipment shed" that has so much in the way of paddles and life jackets that it rivals any small sporting goods store. It's about a 10-15 minute paddle to the main road that divides the large Lake Clear with the tributary that runs past the house, and there's a tunnel underneath you can paddle through, but you need to duck your head.
There's a fire ring on the side of the home, and there's plenty of firewood, enough to last several seasons by my guess, although we couldn't find any firestarter so don't forget to bring some of your own along with the marshmallows and sticks to hold them.
The property is about as secluded as you can possibly get. Once you turn off the main road, and onto the private road that is clearly marked as such, there's one home on the left, and after you travel perhaps a mile or so down the road, there is only this property and one other occupied home which are neighbors and are listed as people to contact in case of a problem. You probably won't see them or anyone else during your stay. There's one other nearby home but it appears to be part time, seasonal use only if it's even used at all.
Potential renters should know that while the home is "waterfront" it's really on a relatively narrow tributary between Lake Clear and a smaller lake. The water in front of the home is a thin strip that connects both of the larger lakes, and it's not visible from the home. There were lots of mosquitos despite the screening on the porch and all the windows, we tried to figure out where they were all coming from but no luck there. Also the internet is slow and sporadic, sometimes it worked at a reasonable speed other times it would not load at all, despite attempts by the property owners to make it work. Otherwise I have no issues with the property.
Beautiful lake and well appointed home.
Spent our vacation boating and swimming on Lake Clear. Recommend Donnellys ice cream -Enjoyed a lovely dinner and great stories at the Saranac Inn. Highly recommend the property for a great vacation
Thanks for writing a review. I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself. Come again.
This house was better than we expected and close to everything we wanted to do. It is a great private property so that you can enjoy a true adirondack experience.
Thank you for your review. We're glad you will be returning.
Far exceeded our expectations
It is difficult to know where to start - the property was exactly as the pictures indicated, only maybe a little bit better. The screened in deck was spacious and a great place to get away and relax. We are a family of five and the canoes and kayak allowed us to journey on the lake together, and the numerous life jackets and paddles were modern and fit us perfectly. During the week we only saw three other canoes on the lake, Three. The whole week. I am a fisherman, and actually got tired of catching fish. They were abundant. (*More on that below if interested). Because the lake is actually an outlet of Clear Lake, it was much more calm when the wind was up. The area on the lake and around the home is about exactly what you would picture if you imagined an idyllic Adirondack scene.
The home was well stocked with everything you could possibly need. The towels were great, the beds comfortable and everything in the home was clean and worked well. The water cooler was a really, really nice addition that we used frequently and we appreciated the ability to wash clothes after an adventuresome day. There was a fire pit out back and plenty of wood to go with it. The location was perfect - far enough away to be peaceful but close enough to Saranac, Lake Placid and Keene to be convenient. And Donnelly's Ice Cream is about three miles away. We went there every day, except when we took the easy 2 hour 15 minute drive to Montreal - great!. The owners were great, their instructions were clear and there was a local back-up in case anything went wrong, which it didn't. This camp is highly recommended and we hope to be back soon!
*Fishing - I hadn't fished much up North so was unfamiliar with pike, muskies and pickerel. They are mean and will hit anything. They also have a lot of teeth, so a wire or Tuffline leader is a must if you want to have a chance at keeping your lures. Also, learn how to take them off the hook. You could get cut pretty well if you are not careful. We caught yellow perch, aforementioned mean fish, very nice largemouth, bluegill and one walleye out of the lake. Rooster Tail spinners of various sizes and colors worked well (darker brownish colors seemed to work best and we caught all types of fish on these), as well as silver Kastmasters (best for the mean fish) and spinnerbaits (best for largemouth). I would imagine live bait or worms would work well also. Like I said above, they were abundant and we caught fish every time we went out.
