Galina is from New York and Alexander from Scotland. We built The Bonefish House in 2003 and have mostly lived here in the winters having fallen in love with the Bahamas, it's fabulous climate and friendly people.
Now we spend more time in Edinburgh and closer to the grandchildren, we have opted to rent out the house and visit for shorter periods.
Alexander purchased this house in 2003
Our first house was on the side of the island where most of the beaches are, but we love the tranquillity of the south side, the calm waters and suitability for boating, kayaking, snorkelling and of course fishing
This place is amazing! When we walked into the home, the view blew us away! The caretaker (Cecil), was super helpful and immediately on the spot for anything we needed, or any questions we had. My entire family agreed also that he was one of the finest, most friendly people we've ever met. Kindness and courtesy seem abundant on this island - but Cecil is even above average for here!
The home itself is beautiful, and the deck views, and the dock are incredible for both sunrises and sunsets.
My sons and I primarily planned to fly-fish for bonefish, and had some success (even with the spring tide & full moon, and windier than normal conditions), but then we discovered the thrill of chasing big barracuda and didn't cast at another bonefish the entire time. We floated in the big green kayak and tossed tube lures at cudas. It was pretty fast action and something I'd highly recommend. My sons and I fly-fish almost exclusively, but watching 4 foot fish strip line at 20-30mph, and jump 10 feet into the air, from a kayak was one of the coolest things I've ever seen in 40 years of fishing (tip - you should get to the beach to land them though, as they could be really dangerous!).
This home was very well planned, and is laid out superbly for a family or group of 4-5. We had plenty of room and everything was nicely organized. Everything worked perfectly! It was extremely convenient having a washer & dryer in the home, and my wife had high marks for the kitchen. The hammock on the deck is extremely comfy, and with that steady Bahamian breeze it made for some good naps.
The homeowner (Alex) is the best that I've ever rented from.
The large yellow kayak had a small leak that was just bad enough that we couldn't really do long trips in it. I explained the problem to Cecil and he relayed it to Alex, and they promptly hooked us up - they purchased a brand new kayak from Browns Marine. I should add that the kayak they purchased is extremely stable, and durable, and can easily accommodate 3 adults, which makes this place really advantageous to all you DIY bonefish folks because it easily fits on a rental car and has the stability to handle some wind & waves, tracks well, and has enough storage to bring your gear and/or fish from the kayak if you dare. It also makes it possible for a young couple to take a youngster out with them safely.
Exuma and it's people are amazing! And this home is the best we've stayed at. Well worth every penny!!!!
Thanks Cecil and Alex!
This was our third trip to Exuma - first time staying at Bonefish. The house was great! Excellent views with a nicely covered deck. This came in handy when we had some rain showers come through. The house was clean and had every amenity that we needed. Cecil met us at the airport and showed us back to the house and made sure we were all set. He was so friendly and checked in on us throughout the week. This being our 3rd visit we thought we had seen it all, but this trip we discovered Hooper's Bay & the sea turtles! If you drive a few miles north of Georgetown you will a public access sign on the right side of the road in the Hooper's Bay housing area. We parked on the side of the road and walked up/down the path down to the beach. Walk the WHOLE way down to the very last dock. If you hang out for about 10-15 min the turtles will eventually show up. We went back on a second day and took some squid for them. They will come right up to you in the water, but BE CAREFUL. One of them was rather aggressive and basically chased after me until I got out of the water...my string on my bathing suit must have looked like food for him! Overall, Bonefish is a wonderful house and I would highly recommend it.
* The internet on the island isn't that strong, so if you need to stream things that might be a problem.
* We rented a Honda CRV and while I think a regular car would've been fine the CRV was nice
* If this is your first visit to an island, be prepared for the cost of food.
* Be sure to go to the Friday Fish Fry - if it's crowded...which it always is...be prepared to wait. Get yourself a drink & have some conch salad while you wait!
* They now put up a sign for the Tropic of Cancer Beach (WOOHOO!). It's at least a 20 min drive from the house. Be sure to check out Santana's after your beach day (they close at sunset)
We had this beautiful place for 10 days , I wish we could stay longer, this is a perfect location for a beach house , very privet , beautifully designed and clean . we could not get enough of the gorgeous ocean view which is available from every room and the patio facing the blue waters of the Caribbean . we had a great time in Exuma .it was our first visit to this island of the Bahamas and we were happily surprised. The island is beautiful it probably has one of the best beaches in the Caribbean our favourite beach was the tropic of cancer which is only 15 min. drive from the house the seafood is amazing . for the house I think the pictures don't justify the place, it is truly beautiful . I highly recommend it
I have been home for two weeks now and I am just getting myself to write this review, because I think I am still in denial that it is over. I found Exuma by accident googling bluest water in the world. Many things came up, but then I came across the out islands of the Bahamas. I read about each one, and after much consideration, thought that exuma was perfect for what my husband and I love in a vacation. It's laid back, it's small, yet there is adventure everywhere you look, if that's what you want to do. We found this property, and it looked amazing. It looked like everything we wanted in a house, and it over delivered. It is on the flats, that seemed appealing to us, as we wanted to kayak and bonefish, but it was so much more than that. You watch a sandbar appear and disappear all throughout the day. The deck is amazing. Put of the hot sun, quiet, with the best breeze ever. It goes across the entire front of the house. We rented a boat and went all around the harbour, which is amazing. We should have done that a few days. It is in the perfect location. 15 minutes from Georgetown, and 20 or so from little exuma, such as Santana's etc. Alex who takes care of the house is unbelievable. He met us at the airport, and took us back. He took us grocery shopping and to the liquor store. He also took us fishing and snorkeling and made us dinner. We made a friend for life. The people of exuma are amazing. So proud, so welcoming. I can't say enough. Thank you so much Alexander, Galina, and Alex! B back soon!
This house is amazing. As we drive from the airport, we see lovely beaches in anticipation. We see other properties that we were considering, but turned down. Then we see water--gorgeous water just in front of us. "Can it be? This is the property? It's THAT beautiful in real life?" YES!
The location is quiet, secluded, and optimal for our vacation. We went swimming at every opportunity, kayaked to the sandbar and then walked to the island on the other side. That island has the nicest sand around--white, fine sand, deep enough to swim, tropical fish bigger than your hand, and no seaweed!
Alex is amazing, so resourceful and extremely friendly. He met us at the airport to show us the way, and we kept in touch with him throughout our stay. Alexander was just wonderful to work with--in the end, it was his friendliness that won us over other properties.
House is set up with the garage on bottom, and everything else on the top floor. The house had everything we needed. VERY clean, very cozy, and well maintained. All necessities were provided. I have nothing to complain about. Hammock is so relaxing, 4 sliding doors providing light and view of the water, view of the sun all day long, quick drive to all necessities, central A/C, 3 beds, beautiful quiet ceiling fans in each room, very well lit, tall ceilings--this home is luxury and well worth the stay. We will definitely be returning and recommending this place to our friends and family.
We loved staying at the Bonefish house. The house as well as the location are beautiful. It is centrally location so visiting the north end, south end and George town did not take too long to get too. We are already planning our trip back to exuma next year!! Alex, the house manager, was more than helpful. He provided us with food when we arrived since the grocery stores were closed for the day when we arrived. He even dropped off some yummy homemade juice! He offer advice on what to do and which companies to use. Make sure you make a trip down to Santanas and moms bakery, near tropic of cancer beach, the best food we had the entire trip! Just some advice for future travelers, ditch some of the clothes in your suit case and bring food for dinners at the house. The pricing for food and essential are ridiculous. A 5lb bag of flour was $25 and 4 rolls of toilet paper were $12 just to give you an idea on the pricing.
Bonefish House looks directly over some of the finest Bonefishing in the world, with stunning views over outlying Ceys and the Setting Sun.
The house is located on the Island of Great Exuma, one of the Family Islands of the Bahamas and itself comprised of some 365 Islands that are mostly uninhabited. It is easily accessed with direct flights from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, Toronto and Nassau.
There are magnificent Beaches all around Exuma and on the small Cays and Islands offshore.
Georgetown is only a couple of miles away and includes several Supermarkets, Bars, Restaurants, Banks and ATMs.
Here also you can Rent a Boat or hire a Water Taxi to visit Stocking Island it's famous Beach Bar, the well named Chat and Chill.
Explore Little Exuma, the huge, empty Tropic of Cancer Beach and lunch at Santanas or Tropic Breeze in Williamstown.
Alex, who looks after our home, and you while you are there, will arrange Fishing Trips, or Sightseeing Tours up the Exuma Cays to Staniel Cay, Thunderball Grotto, and to see the notorious 'Swimming Pigs'.
