Tons of dead flies, sheets not clean, gas smell, refrigerator broken, and cold.

  • 1 of 5

Second time I've stayed here. Once in June and once in October. Neither time were the sheets on the beds, so I made them up. However, this time (October), clearly no one had cleaned or been in the house for a while. There were tons of dead flies inside the 2nd & 3rd floor doors to the balconies. I tried to avoid stepping on some on my way to the third floor bedroom, but couldn't - so ended up finding the vacuum cleaner and cleaning them all up. Kind of gross. Then I made the beds on the 2nd floor, but couldn't find the sheets for the third floor, so I went down to the basement. There was a strong gas smell. Texted the owner and he said that happened with the gas dryer when the wind blew. Not comforting. I took the sheets upstairs and opened windows to air gas out of the house. Late that night, I went to make my bed and found white bug nests in the sheets. I was exhausted and turned the sheets so I slept touching the clean side, but once again - not pleasant.

The refrigerator was not working when I got there. The freezer had mold in it and the ice trays were melted and had mold in them. I turned the refrigerator and freezer on, because I had bought food for my stay. My roommates also brought food. I thought I had things going, but the fridge stopped working overnight. I texted the owner, but then the fridge started working again-briefly. He offered to have someone drop off a college size fridge late at night, but I thought we had it fixed & we were exhausted after a long day of class. Wrong - not fixed. We lost all the food by morning, but very likely it was already spoilt. Fridge would stop again & again after running briefly. Painful extra cost for us.

There was an air conditioner in 3rd floor bedroom that wasn't winterized. I couldn't get it out of the window. Plus, a risky thing I shouldn't have to do. I slept with basically an open window for 2 out of 3 nights till the owner got it out after he got back to the house. I caught a cold and started to run a fever late into the 2nd night. Really helped to NOT have the window open on the last night, but I've gone days after getting home with no voice from getting so sick.

The owner did not offer to refund any money. I debated about asking, but couldn't talk and have a lot of other stresses right now. I do NOT believe we got what we paid for, especially after the loss of the food and the extreme discomfort and recovery needed from this stay. I obviously won't trust this owner to stay again.

Owner's Response: I am glad you enjoyed your first stay and decided to return. Unfortunately after having the house cleaned two weeks prior to your stay I did not have anyone check again. Lesson learned..always check house right before new arrival. The refrigerator failure was a surprise as it was working fine when the house was last rented and I offered a alternative immediately when informed of the problem. New refrigerator has arrived. Lesson learned...bring the alternative even when renter says...wait and see. Yes the air conditioner was still in the bedroom window. We had 80 degree days earlier that week. It was removed as soon as I was aware of it being a issue. There are totes with extra blankets in each room and the heating system was on and functioning. Lesson learned...just do the best you can.

Peaceful, Great Scenery, Short Walk to Water's Edge & Good Eats

  • 5 of 5

Great landing spot for 3-4 people who want to explore Chautaqua County! Leave technology behind and explore what Cassadaga has to offer, prepare Amish grown goods in the kitchen, enjoy one of the two decks watching the sun go down. Golf, kayak, swimming dock, basketball courts, fishing, an underground railroad stop, the victorian village of Lilydale are all within walking distance of house. House was clean, filled with light and gave each of us our own space. No tv or wifi meant time spent talking and exploring. A good place to recharge for the weekend or longer! Owner was responsive to our questions and gave us needed information before our stay.

Comfotable and clean - very nice house!

  • 4 of 5

The house is as advertised, comfortable and clean. We enjoyed our morning coffee out on the deck with a view of the lake across the road. I would definitely recommend this property for families, there is lots of room and this is a way better choice than a hotel. I'm contemplating a stay in the fall, the scenery will be spectacular.

The lake has a beach as well, but signs posted say "No swimming unless Lifeguard on Duty". Unfortunately, the couple of times we walked down to the beach, there was no lifeguard on duty. Not being ones to break the law, and not being US Citizens we didn't want to get into trouble, so we didn't swim. Also the dock leading out into the water, unfortunately had a whole lot of goose poop on it, so it would have been a challenge to navigate to the end of the dock without slip-sliding through it. We all love the geese, but boy they can make a mess!

I give 4 stars for "overall", but I would give 5 stars for the home and for the service from the owners.
