This coastal home on St. John's harbour is the most easterly guest house in North America.

Feb 2016, Conde Nast Traveler called the Outer Battery Village one of "...the Most Beautiful Places in Canada...". Hare's Ears Cottage shares the property line with Signal Hill National Park and has door-step access to the Signal Hill hiking and walking trails along with close access to the Grand Concourse urban trail system. Nestled in the cliffs of the popular Outer Battery Village, the house is just 30 feet from the ocean, 5 minutes from downtown by car and 10 minutes by foot. It has a deck with a Weber gas bbq, panoramic views of the harbour & city skyline, and a southern exposure. Bald Eagles nest near the property.

This is the best location in the city.

The 3 bedroom house, convertible to 2 bedroom, has a ground floor studio with separate entrance including bath and kitchen. Great layout for the multi-generational travellers.

Great Location

The property sits on a great location and we really enjoyed the views. The cottage was clean and well maintained. We met the property manager, Tanya, and she was very helpful in answering all of the questions we had. The only negative would be the parking situation. I realize it is difficult to have adequate parking where the cottage is located but it was a real hassle overtime we had to park. Overall our stay was perfect and the management made sure we were taken care of

Hares Ears Cottage - great experience

We (5 adults) stayed at HEC from Nov. 6 to Nov. 19. We were visiting the area to attend a relative's wedding and have visited St. John's many times over the years. This was a comfortable, clean, charming and well appointed cottage with a great view of the harbour and the ships going by. The owner, Ken, was very friendly and accessible and we had no issues at all. The cottage was as described. Before we arrived my major concern was around available parking and driving those very narrow roads as we had stayed elsewhere in the Battery and knew what it was like. My concerns were unfounded and after the first drive through, I felt very comfortable with both driving and parking. We chose this location for the experience of staying in a very historic and unique area of St. John's and we were not disappointed. I would recommend this cottage. I also like the VRBO site and feel comfortable booking through this site (I will say that I have NOT had a good experience with another well-known booking site that charges renters significant service charges). There are currently no additional charges to the renter by VRBO and this is an attractive feature.

Amazing getaway

We had a wonderful time in St. John's and the consensus was that Hare's Ear is incredibly charming, comfortable and well-equipped. We loved it. The view is amazing and the Battery really has to be seen to be believed. We also agreed that the people we met were hands down the nicest people we've met while traveling.

We had delicious meals at Chinched (we told Michelle that you sent us), Mallard Cafe and Adelaide Oyster House. Thanks also for the music recommendations. We spent quite a bit of time at O'Reilly's and the Shamrock City Cafe and we got screeched in at Christian's.

Hiking from Hare's Ear into Quidi Vidi was a highlight. We also hiked at Pouch's Cove and Cape Spear. On the O'Brien boat tour we learned all about puffins. We are already talking about going back and trying to include Fogo Island next time.

The CapeRace Three Days in St. John's map really came in handy. I recommend it.

Steps from the city and the North Head Trail to Signal Hill

Hare's Ears will forever be in our hearts as the charming, comfortable and convenient home away from home it is. We travelled with an 8 month old, two young adults and two Middle Agers. We were all fit enough to enjoy the daily walks into St. John's and several trips on the North Head Trail. Pushing a stroller into town is highly doable!

Hare's Ears is beautifully decorated and had every convenience we could hope for. The owner and local caretakers were both very attentive to our questions and needs. The views of the harbour are fantastic! There's something to watch 24 hours a day outside the wall to wall windows. Our grandchild loved watching all the birds flying and landing nearby and we were literally nestled into "The Rock". It was fun to pick out our home in the Battery from St. John's and from the boat ride we took to view incredible icebergs just outside of the harbour.

Hare's Ears was the perfect home base for us to really enjoy our week in St. John's and environs.

All the charm of St. John's

After having lived in St. John's for four years, I am now a regular visitor for work and vacation. Previously, we have also stayed in both hotels and short term apartment-style rentals in the downtown area. So, we know the city fairly well, and have a good sense of the types of accommodations options that are available.

On our recent trip, I was looking for a larger apartment/house for my young family of 5. We found Hare's Ears and stayed for most of the month of November. And we loved it!

Hare's Ears is a well appointed, and recently renovated home in St. John's historic Battery. It is clean with ample room for 2 adults, 3 children and a grandparent. The main part of the house is well setup for hosting, with a well-equipped and open concept kitchen, dining area, and living room. The two bedrooms are comfortable, and the bathroom is modern. There is also a fully equipped studio apartment/granny suite on the ground level.

The house has many windows that look directly towards the harbour and city, providing stunning views of St. John's ever-changing weather. The home is located conveniently close to hiking trails, with one trail head only steps from the front door, and Signal Hill towering overhead. The home is a bit further away from downtown than many hotels, but is similar distance compared to other short-terms apartment rentals. Downtown is still walkable in about 10-20 minutes, and there are lovely dining options near the base of Signal Hill including International Flavour (Pakistani), Gracie Joes (Bistro/cafe), and Mallard Cottage (one of the best new restaurants in Canada!). Despite this, a car is still a big help.

Our only complaints were that driving into this part of the Battery was difficult in winter weather, and that the keyless entry (via a keypad) did not work. Fortunately, the owners, Ken and Jane were accessible, and provided us with a key. They were also very helpful in assisting us with a few quirky requests.

We highly recommend staying at Hare's Ears in both the high or low seasons. It will give you as great flavour of the city, and you will quickly and easily feel at home.

Owner's Response: Nathaniel, Thanks for the great review. Speaking of quirks- the keypad lock is now operational. New batteries did the trick. Who would have guessed? Note to persons visiting in the winter months, (Jan/Feb) the Battery neighbourhood is the first neighbourhood in the city to be plowed. (City policy) Surprisingly, St. John's has the third most temperate climate in Canada behind Victoria and Vancouver, and there is little snow until January. The distance from the house to the downtown Sheraton Hotel is 1.1 km (.68 mi) for those that want to walk. Ken

This is a beautiful, bright home in a great area of St. Johns, just a short walk from the downtown core and with a fantastic view of the inner harbour.
