Architectural Ocean Front Gem on Widest most Private Beach in Virginia Beach

Bedrooms 5
Half Baths4
Space 3,200 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 4+ Bedrooms, 2 full/4 half Baths,outside shower, (Sleeps 12-16)

This luxurious oceanfront home has stunning views of the best beach in north end of Virginia Beach. Nestled in a grove of live oaks and pine trees, this property feels like a private retreat from the moment you round the corner of the driveway. In a quiet residential neighborhood, this home is the place to get away from it all!

3,200 square feet on five levels plus two patios, a rooftop deck, two garden areas, a grove of live oaks, and playground for children give ample space for individuals in a large group to have moments of quiet retreat, making this home ideal for family gatherings. Guests repeatedly state that the website photos don't do it justice.

Fees quoted are for up to twelve people in four bedrooms. Guests repeatedly remark about how comfortable the memory foam mattresses are and how well they sleep. A fifth bedroom which has a separate entrance, plus two more bedrooms next door in the Owner's home, and a queen air mattress for the music room are available for additional fees. The dining room seats 16.

Inspired by the Norfolk residency of Frank Lloyd Wright in 1953, and designed by local architect, Herbert Smith, this home was built in 1955 and is registered on the Virginia Beach Historic Register. There are still some pieces of the original 1955 furniture and the mid-century aesthetic has been retained in the updating.

A fully furnished rooftop deck has what is often described as “the best view in Virginia Beach”. Our beach is where the dolphin watching boats stop to view our favorite mammals and you can watch them at any time from the comfort of your dining room or rooftop deck! Cook on the deck with the grill or cook in the kitchen and send food up in the dumb waiter! And enjoy a perfect view of the weekly city fireworks, as well as sunrises, sunsets and full moons.

'Sandswept' is a multilevel level house with four floors plus the ground floor which has a laundry room, outdoor shower, additional half bath and optional fifth bedroom. The multiple levels provide a large group numerous opportunities for privacy, with the bedrooms well spread out from each other. The many steps, however, make this inaccessible for the handicapped and uncomfortable for those with mobility issues. Access to Pelican room on top and the rooftop deck is only via a spiral staircase.

Both full bathrooms provide spa like experiences, with tubs that provide aeromassage, dynamic turbo massage and chromatherapy. Toilets are located in “water closets” separated from the cleansing shower and tub area, which allows a bather to relax undisturbed. Dimmers in the bathrooms and throughout the house let you create mood lighting whenever and wherever you want.

A spacious hot and cold exterior shower with two stalls helps your group easily clean off the sand after the beach. A beach cart makes it easy to carry small children and their toys, umbrellas, chairs, and snacks to the beach. Bring or rent a surfboard or kayak. We provide wheels to help roll the kayak down to the beach. Surfing is allowed before 10:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m. in the summer. Dogs are allowed on the beach before 10:00 a.m. and after 6:00 p.m in the summer and anytime the rest of the year.

The grounds offer numerous places to retreat outside: a playground for the kids in the shade of the holly tree, two patios, one on the east side and one on the west, a pond with goldfish, and a garden that is a recognized wildlife habitat, full of flowers and bushes that attract and feed butterflies and hummingbirds.

There are six parking places which is a very unusual luxury in this part of Virginia Beach.

Tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood, this home is perfect for families, but is not suitable for noisy gatherings of unrelated adults.

Listed with Virginia Green Travel as an exemplary green vacation rental, this Green home was fully renovated in 2006 to Energy Star and LEED ReGreen standards with top of the line Energy Star appliances and excellent windows and insulation to provide greater indoor comfort. There are no VOCs in the finishes so this is the perfect home for anyone with chronic allergies or asthma.

This cul de sac has no traffic and has primarily year round residents. An entrance to walking paths in First Landing State Park is two blocks away. Downtown with all its activities is only 3 miles away, a safe and easy bike ride on the access road. The Virginia Aquarium, Auto World bumper cars and Ocean Breeze Water Park are only 6 miles. Busch Gardens, Water Country and historic Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown are an hour away.

There are two TVs with DISH network plus DVD players, movies, and board/card games for rainy days. WiFi is provided. A solar and wind powered clothes dryer lets your clothes smell fresh. Crib, high chair, booster chair, infant seat for outdoor swingset, and diaper pail are available.

No Smoking. Leave outside shoes at the door as this is the single most important way to protect indoor air quality. Dogs are permitted on a case by case basis, with an extra pet fee per dog; shaded, fenced dog yard can be shared with owner’s dogs.

The owner lives next door and shares the driveway, laundry facilities, and grounds. She provides inside tips on local information and restaurants as a concierge would do. Her Australian terriers love to share their dog yard with visiting dog buddies.

About Gayle

I am a classical musician, a harpsichordist, and an eco- builder, helping homeowners build high performance, energy efficient homes.

I have two Australian terriers and we walk every day on the beach.

I sing with the Virginia Symphony Chorus.

Gayle purchased this house in 1955

Why Gayle chose Northeast Virginia Beach

This is my family home, built by my parents in 1955 to entertain summer guests. It has provided many happy summer memories for many people for 60 years! It is on the historic register for the city of Virginia Beach. We aim to preserve this historic property and keep providing a restorative retreat for many people. This home is often said to have the best view of the best beach in Virginia Beach.

What makes this house unique

Walking dogs on the beach is my favorite activity year round.

In the summer, I enjoy swimming, sunbathing, hiking in the cool shade of nearby First Landing State Park, biking to the resort area, watching the sunrise or the full moon from the roofdeck.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a wonderful time we had in your house... The view here is awesome, beautiful, brilliant.... The house is a treasure and we could have the pleasure to see the dolphins swimming in the ocean while having breakfast. We enjoy everything there, the dogs, the owner and the place... and very moment.

This is the perfect place!!

  • 5 of 5

Sandswept was the perfect place for our vacation! Our group numbered 10 adults, 1 teen, 3 young kids and 5 dogs! Five families that span 4 generations! Our hostess Gayle was an absolute pleasure and the fact that this beautiful home is her family history made our memories there even more special. Everyone had their own space and the location was perfect for us. Little ones took full advantage of the lovely playground/garden area everyday and our teen loved staying up in the pelican room. Gayle was always quick to respond to any questions...we just text her and she answered right away. She has everything labeled and instructions clearly marked. The beach is wonderful to walk, fly kites, play volleyball and just relax. The music room has a comfy couch to curl up on and read a book and a table and chairs with enough room for everyone to gather and play games. You will find everything you need in the fabulous kitchen and we all got a lesson in energy efficiency! This is truly the perfect place for a family to gather and make memories!

The different levels in the house are great but can pose a problem for someone with mobility issues and parking is tight but we parked as Gayle instructed us and had no problems with 4 cars! The rainfall showers and jacuzzi tubs were a favorite and the heated floors in the bathrooms...what else could you want! Will go back to Sandswept in a heartbeat if the opportunity comes along again. We enjoyed our stay! Thank you Gayle for sharing this beautiful place with us!! ❤️❤️❤️

Wonderful gem on the beach!

Loved the view, the many living spaces and the proximity to wide expanse of beach. Can't wait to go back. Never knew such beaches were in such relative close proximity to NoVa.

This home was lovely

  • 5 of 5

We had a great experience here with our large family. We had five couples, three kids, two babies, and one grandparent and everyone was comfortably accommodated when we used the extra lower room. It was nice to be within walking distance to the beach and the beach carts and equipment provided were very helpful. Plenty of space for everyone to gather and the kids loved the outside swingset area.

Wonderful location and architectural beauty!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our week at VA beach and this home was great. It has enough room for 4 families, and it's an easy walk to an uncrowded (almost private) beach. Plus plenty of room to gather together both inside in the great room and music room, or outside on the large patio. There's also a beautiful sky top deck for watching the sunrise or just bask in the peacefulness. Parts of the house are more updated then others, but it balances out well. It's also just a 10 min drive into the center of town and the boardwalk. Easy to get to.

This home is in the prestigious Northend of Virginia Beach, a quiet residential neighborhood with no hotels or commerce. Tucked away in the middle of the block, this home provides a quiet refuge where children can play safely on the playground and adults can relax and listen to the ocean waves and bird calls on two patios, a rooftop deck and in the garden. The widest beach at Virginia Beach is easily accessed by a public walkway. Being a quiet residential neighborhood with neighbors who value peace, this is not a place for loud parties. It can however be ideal for small weddings or family reunions that wind down by c. 10:00 p.m. Parking is limited in the neighborhood but there are six possible parking spaces at this property.
