Why Cathy Havard chose Alabama Gulf Coast

We love Dauphin Island, a wonder of nature and full of history - a barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico . The population is about 1,300. The town is included in the Mobile metropolitan statistical area. The island was named for Louis XIV's great-grandson and heir, the Dauphin. Our 'laid-back' atmosphere is prized by folks who enjoy serenity and natural beauty.

The eastern, wider portion of the island, is shaded by thick stands of maritime pine trees, but the narrow, western part of the island features scrub growth and few trees.

Dauphin Island is home to Fort Gaines, Dauphin Island Sea Lab, The Estuarium public aquarium, the Dauphin Island Airport, boat ramps, a fishing pier located on the Island's eastern end, historic sites, several restaurants. Beaches attract tourism, and fishing is a popular activity in the waters around the island. The island is connected to the mainland by a 3.5 mile long bridge.

Although the entire island is a bird sanctuary, the main one is the 164-acre Audubon Bird Sanctuary. Dauphin Island is the first landfall encountered by many birds as they migrate north from Central and South America, and as a consequence many species can be found resting there before continuing their journey.

In 1519, the Spanish explorer Alonso Álvarez de Pineda was the first documented European to visit, staying long enough to map the island with remarkable accuracy.

The island's French history began on January 31, 1699, when the explorer Pierre Le Moyne, sieur d'Iberville, D'Iberville later decided to locate a port for Fort Louis de La Louisiane (Mobile). Fort Gaines on the eastern tip of the island was built between 1821 and 1848. It was occupied by Confederate forces in 1861, and captured by Federal troops during the Battle of Mobile Bay. The phrase, 'Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead,' was spoken by U. S. Admiral David Farragut just a few hundred yards from Dauphin Island's shore.

There are so many reasons to love Dauphin Island. The atmosphere is quiet and laid back ( you are on Island Time ). The beaches are beautiful, white sand, miles of beach to walk and enjoy shelling, fishing, birding, watching the dolphins (lots of them)! The SUNSETS are fantastic...Dauphin Island is Alabama's 'Sunset Capital' Our homes provide you with an awesome deck overlooking the views to the south, east and west. You are also close to the island-wide bike trail which is great for biking, running, or walking. There are no traffic lights on the island and life is truly low key. This will be the most relaxing vacation you can remember.

Crawling with silverfish!

The first thing that greeted us when we opened a drawer was a live silverfish! We managed to find several more in the bathroom and crawling around in the master bedroom all in one night. Due to our full itinerary for our trip, it was late when we arrived the first night, and we were tired. We slept (rather warily), but were careful not to put anything on the ground or unpack. We notified the management office the following day, but quite frankly, they did not seem to know what to do. There was one lady at the office who was trying to help but she was clearly not management. They finally managed to find whom to contact to spray the condo, but now two days had passed. They told us that someone would be out to spray by the third day (out of our four-day stay), but not sure if anyone ever came. We were told we would be notified when someone came, but we were never notified. We never unpacked and were constantly looking out for more silverfish. We left messages for someone from management to contact us to address the issue, but no one from management called. We had a full schedule while we were visiting, so it was a blessing we did not spend much time in the condo. We left early the fourth day, leaving a written note requesting someone to contact us. Needless to say, one does not look forward to creepy, crawly house guests on vacation, but what is worse is the lack of concern from management! Given that the condo takes a nonrefundable fee "in case" there may be damage, it seems that they could at least consider refunding that fee when the condo itself was not in presentable shape! Until now, no one has attempted to contact us. Would give it zero stars for the handling of the situation!

Wonderful condo and complex

The condo was perfect! Clean, good space, comfortable furniture, with all needed amenities. The pool area is very nice....indoor and outdoor. Parking and elevators supremely convenient!! The entire complex felt very safe. I love having all doors locked, going in and out. Some people may find that inconvenient, but it added a sense of security. The beach view was fantastic from the very large deck!! No complaints at all. I would/will certainly be returning!! If I had one tiny bit of advice.......maybe have a couple of beach chairs available for guests to use. :o)

Loved this condo!

We all really loved this condo, it was centrally located in the resort, very close to the elevators, and directly above the outdoor pool area. Very quiet tho, we never heard any noise from the pool area or other guests. Beds and furniture were comfortable and extremely clean. We never were able to connect to the wireless, but who wants to be on the internet while at the beach! We would definitely stay at this same condo again! And the staff at Dauphin Rentals were great too.
