|Property type||chateau / country house|
|Minimum Stay||2 - 7 nights|
"Casas Caiadas" is a boutique home close to Évora (Unesco heritage), designed for hosting families, or groups, up to 8 persons (10 persons from May to September).
You will find 3 independent houses, fully restored from a core of old water mills, in the heart of an Alentejo with waterways, luscious green landscape most of the year and megalithic rocks.
The social house consists of a kitchen, living and dining room: the meeting place per excellence, very welcoming, where handicraft objects combine with great elegance with furniture and minimalist pieces. In this house, besides every morning breakfast (included), local and delicious dishes may be prepared at all meals by a cook – hosted families may decide, each day, if they wish for one or two meals be prepared for them, or if they prefer to prepare them themselves (wine list available).
The other two houses are, respectively, a suite installed in a stone house and a house with 3 more rooms: a suite (room + bathroom) and 2 bedrooms with a sharing bathroom. The beach-like swimming pool installed between an ancient waterway of the mills maintains its most natural form. A place to relax by a stream that runs between stones, surrounded by centennial olive trees, menhirs and a beach-like swimming pool.
Around Casas Caiadas (whitewashed houses) there are fabulous country rounds to explore: walk or take a bike (3 bikes available). Nearby, there are villages of unique beauty and historical interest, with castles and other monuments, great restaurants and wineries (detailed information available on request).
Alentejo has distinct seasons, with a green spring rich in wild flowers. In the early summer, storks build their nests on rooftops in whitewashed villages, and the heat turns the plains to gold. And when night falls the sky offers a chance to contemplate the stars with visibility conditions like no other place in the south of Europe.
At Casas Caiadas it is as if you were alone in the world, despite the fact that the small village of Sabugueiro is located a little over a kilometer away... close to Évora, the authentic Alentejo!
Casas Caiadas is reachable by a country road. It is located 1 km from Sabugueiro, 15m from Arraiolos, 30m from Évora (Unesco heritage) and 1 hour drive from Lisbon.
The history of Casas Caiadas Project:
A Lisbon couple sets off into a real estate adventure and purchases, with an impulse, a small plot with four ruins in the middle of Alentejo. The location is remote, without paved road access and only accessible in summer, as the river fills and overflows in winter. The early days are passed clearing the land, investigating the site and thinking what to do next. They decide to get help and recover the original buildings, keeping as much as possible of what remains original and unique, and found in arquitect Luís Pereira Miguel the right partner for the project. Casas Caiadas has already been published “Portuguese Restored Houses” and “Arhitext” books; and other specialty media as like “Wallpaper*”, “Sunday Times Travel, “Architectura y Diseño”, Archilovers (best project 2015), “Architizer”, “Archdaily”, “Divisare” and “Attitude”.

Casas Caiadas is set in a beautiful remote location in the heart of the rural Portuguese farming community where agriculture meets wilderness. Casas Caiadas is stunning in its simplicity, retaining the structure of the century’s old water mill, finished in smooth white painted walls featuring natural stone nooks and crannies. Internally old rustic furniture contrasting with contemporary mod cons made for a relaxing ambience. The beach style infinity pool is of a real state of the art design great for both paddlers and swimmers alike.
We really appreciated having breakfast made for us each morning with an amazing choice of food to keep you going all day. Whilst we were enjoying our breakfast our beds were being made and bathroom facilities cleaned.
Each morning before breakfast and before the sun got too hot, those of us, who managed to get up, went for walks or jogs out along the isolated lanes that meander through the ancient olive groves. It was so nice just to hear the sounds of the wildlife and see unspoilt countryside all around.
We had a traditional Portuguese fish dish cooked for us in the villa on our first night which was of the highest standard. It was our preference to eat in on subsequent evenings taking in turns to cook in the well equipped kitchen. The nearest fully stocked supermarket is some distance away but visits can be combined with day trips to places of interest; we especially recommend a visit to the walled village of Monsaraz. Compared to the UK we found the local roads almost deserted and parking easy and free.
The stars are quite spectacular after dark as you look up from this rural setting. It can make you ponder your existence on planet earth as you spot another shooting star across the night sky.
For my wife the highlight of our stay was laying pool side in this peaceful and enchanting environment. For me it was exploring the olive grove wilderness walking alone or on mountain bikes with my son. My daughter enjoyed the opportunity to do some undisturbed research reading in the cool inspiring space that was the old water mill.
All in all it was a lovely & memorable family holiday made the more so by the attention to detail and consideration of the owner Mario Domingues.
This is really the perfect title to describe our stay at Casas Caiadas. In the middle of a distinctive landscape in Alentejo, three small traditional houses emerge where you least expect. The scent of the land, the silence of the location, the birds in the morning, the perfect light of the sunrise, are incomparable. In the inside, you feel cozy, the design and the modern decor leave nothing unintended. It is the perfect place to read a book, have a simple family gathering or just escape from the everyday life. The property is spot-on in every detail. Claudia is an amazing chef and an helpful hand when you need. Paula and Mário, the owners, are two big hearts, perfect to welcome and guide you in your stay. Hopefully we will be able to come back soon.
Simply the paradise.
The complex, is gorgeous and secluded. You feel like you are in your own world. Mario met us in the nearest town and escorted us to Casas Caiadas. He gave us a tour and made sure we were comfortable. We were able to contact Mario with any questions and he always replied immediately. There are 4 bedrooms split between two buildings and another building that houses the family room, dining room, and kitchen. There is a beautiful pool, bicycles, and great outdoor seating area. The interior design of all the buildings is gorgeous and it feels very luxurious while still being extremely comfortable. You can feel the love Mario and his wife put into Casas Caiadas through all the little details- perfectly placed antiques, custom made local rugs and great art. Claudia came and made breakfast for us and we paid extra to have her come and cook us dinner twice and lunch once. It was all excellent, the best food we had while in Portugal! And she was able to work around my dairy-free diet! Authentic Alentejo Houses is truly a special place. We didn’t want to leave and definitely want to come back and stay for a longer visit. Don’t hesitate. We were able to make day trips to Evora and Monsaraz but our favorite thing to do was hang out and enjoy Casas Caiadas!
Mario was an amazing host, and the houses are incredible — beautifully restored and designed with a distinct level of taste, and set in the gorgeous region of Evora. We felt very welcomed and comfortable throughout our stay. We arranged several meals to be prepared there at the house — highly recommend doing this! The housekeeper prepared delicious meals typical of the region and we were able to select top-shelf wines from Mario’s collection. We spent our days by the pool taking in the breathtaking countryside views and nights by the fire and stargazing. The entire experience was beautiful, and we hope to return again soon!
A découvrir absolument. Nous reviendrons autant que possible.
