Our 2 bedroom flat is located within walking distance of the Gion district and many other major tourist attractions, in the Higashiyama area. The Higashiyama district, is one of Kyoto's best preserved historic districts. The flat is within walking distance of the Kiyomizu Gojo subway station. It is also a short taxi ride from Kyoto Station.
Kiyomizu-dera is within easy walking distance from the flat, and the walk to Maruyama Park from Kiyomizu-dera takes you through an area where there are many traditional merchant shops and wooden buildings, reminiscent of the old capital city. You will also find many other temples and shrines along the way. Across the Kamogawa river, you will find the Kawaramachi and Teramachi area, with many restaurants and plenty of shopping, including the Nishiki fresh food market. Nijo Castle is also easily accessible via the subway.
The flat is fully air-conditioned and has a dining/kitchen area, including a 3 cooking zone induction cooktop, microwave/convection cooker, toaster and pod coffee machine. There are 2 bedrooms; one Japanese style tatami room and one western style room, sleeping up to 4 people. Also included is a washing machine/dryer. Other facilities include a TV and mobile wifi which can taken around with you during your stay. Close by, on Gojo Dori, there is a bike rental shop. The surrounding area has many local convenience stores and bottle shops.
The subway will also take you directly to the station where you can take a short train ride to Kuramayama (Mt Kurama), where you will find Kuramayama-dera (Buddhist temple)and a publicly accessible onsen. Reiki practitioners will know Kuramayama as the birthplace of the Reiki movement.
Kyoto has been rated as the number one tourist destination in Japan by foreigner visitors to Japan. There are many attractions in and around Kyoto, and they are easily accessible from our flat, via the subway, railway and buses. Our aim is to provide a comfortable base from which to explore these attractions.
We hope you will love Kyoto as much as we do - Kyoto ga daisuki desu!
House Rules: No smoking
This was a nice place to stay in Kyoto.
Value. You get a whole apartment for the price of a hotel room. Much more space than your average Japanese hotel.
Location: This house is located near the train, downtown, Gion, Kiyomizudera temple, and lots of other attractions. Many are walking distance. Also, you are staying in a residential neighborhood allowing you to interact with neighbors and see what the average person there lives like.
Full usable kitchen: Although the fridge is small, the stove and utensils make it convenient and economical to fix meals in the apartment.
Bath: Spacious, for Japan. Typical bath area with a WC, shower, and soaking tub. There is also a washing machine and a separate sink outside the bathing area.
The bad: Only 2 things I wish were different. First of all, the bedding. One of the bedrooms is tiny with 2 twin beds. It was difficult to get in and out of bed. The second bedroom is much larger but the beds are Japanese style. While this may seem charming to some, the reality is that they were difficult to sleep in comfortably for the first 4 nights. It got a little better after that, but we found them uncomfortable. The other issue was the TV is in one of the bedrooms. I think it would be better in the living space since there is only one.
Overall, I liked the house and would stay here again.
Our family stayed at Nishimura's flat for 5 nights and we had a fabulous time. It was within 20 minutes walking distance of lots of points of interest like Pontocho, Nishiki Market, a few important temples and Kyoto Station. The apartment was very clean and the host was very responsive to our questions and issues. There are a few yummy restaurants and a supermarket 5 minutes walk away as well as access to light rail and lots of bus lines. I highly recommend Nishimura's flat for visiting this beautiful city.
The flat was perfectly suited for our needs. We are seasoned self caterers and even managed it in Japan. There are 3 mini marts nearby. The equipment in the flat is sufficient and all in excellent condition. At first it appeared small but it was adequate as we were busy in the day. Quite right the toilet was a bit tiny but hey ho! Good to be in a typical Japanese flat. It was brilliantly placed for tourist attractions and public transport. Kazuya was on hand via email and responded quickly when necessary. Nice littl touches with the shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap and clothes wash liquid for the washing machine. God value and would recommend it.
I chose this apartment due to its facilities and location. The unit was very nice, well equipped and modern with air conditioning in all rooms. Our host was very helpful with instructions (in Japanese ) on how to get to the unit providing very good notes with our booking. It is only a short taxi ride from Kyoto station and also close to a number of temples and shrines. There are only a couple of things worth noting:
- the unit does not have an elevator so you will need to carry your bags upstairs ( although only 1 floor so not far )
- the toilet room is very small. I had trouble manoeuvring with the door closed so if you are over 6 foot you may find this a problem
- there isn't a sitting room as such. The dining room doubles as this space
