Casa Papaya con Leche was designed with nature in mind, blending tropical landscaping and native Central American sculptured artwork. Simply decorated with locally made furniture and handcrafts, this home is a quaint and relaxing vacation getaway.
The ground level entry welcomes you with an undercover lush tropical garden with outdoor shower that opens to the pool, landscaped yard and ocean views. The private pool lanai has loungers surrounding the secluded cool tile pool and the rock fountain provides the soothing sound of cascading water, a perfect complement to the ocean waves just steps away. The volcanic reef beach just outside the grassy yard offers solitude with endless snorkeling and miles of beach combing possibilities, while the world famous Playa Negra surf break is just a 5 minute walk down the beach. Private parking, Gas bbq, laundry and secured storage perfect to store surf and pool gear round out this ground level.
Upstairs on the second level, a large, covered veranda offers breathtaking ocean views. Teak furniture invites you to relax with a good book or a cocktail. Inside the home, a combined living/dining area/kitchen offers a relaxed living space, decorated with local earthenware. The kitchen is fully equipped with appliances and cookware. The living room offers cable TV, DVD and phone/internet. The two bedrooms are modestly furnished, with a queen bed in the master bedroom and 2 twin beds in the guest bedroom. We stayed at Casa papaya con leche over the holidays with another couple that were looking to get away for NYE. From the start of finding the property, Mary at Beach Grass Rentals was beyond helpful. She helped us understand the surrounding areas and what to expect and also helped us set up some excursions while we were there. This really put me at ease that the property would probably be pretty nice as well.
We arrived at night, but it was a full moon out and you could see the crashing ocean perfectly right from the wrap around balcony. Mary was there to greet us and give us a tour of the house. The house was just what we were expecting and there was an abundance of towels & kitchen appliances to make our stay comfortable. Staying at Casa Papaya is much different from your typical vacation in a resort town. Rancho Playa Negra, the property that the house is on, is very secluded and tourist shops don't exist here. If you are looking for that type of vacation, stay north a bit in Tamarindo. This was a quiet, tranquil piece of land with great private beach access.
The security guards roaming the property and our alarm system made us feel safe at all times. We didn't have one problem while staying there and the people in Playa Negra are all very friendly. I would highly recommend staying at this house if you are in need of a private, and relaxing vacation.
Our family's stay at Casa Papaya con Leche was simply magical. The week away in this lovely country, where we had never traveled, was our Christmas gift to one another, and we loved simply everything about it.
The villa was perfectly situated for us: about an hour-and-a-half drive from the airport in Liberia and a 45-minute trek to Tamarindo, the nearest tourist town with shopping and a variety of restaurants; a 5-minute walk, by way of the rocky beach when the tide was out, to Hotel Playa Negra and one of the world's best swimming and surfing beaches; and a 15-minute drive to Playa Avellanas, another world-class swimming and surfing location. The house, itself, is surrounded by beautiful gardens and has its own swimming pool and a porch with a spectacular view of the sunset.
Honestly, it was such a lovely setting, we were content to spend most of our time right there at the villa, simply following the angles of the sun, lounging in the pool during the hottest parts of the day, enjoying meals or reading in the shade of the porch, tide pooling at low tide, and taking in that gorgeous sunset every night.
There's enough within reasonable walking distance--a couple eating establishments, a swimming/surfing beach (Playa Negra), a small market--that you could do without a car, but we were glad to have a rental to take into Tamarindo for a catamaran sail and snorkeling trip one day and a ride over to Lola's beach cantina on Playa Avellanas another.
As far as the property is concerned, it is just as pictured and described in the listing. Two sizable bedrooms, with comfortable beds, one small but sufficient bathroom, a large open living, dining, kitchen area, with everything you need for cooking and entertaining. There is A/C throughout the house and ceiling fans in every room except the bathroom. It feels spacious, particularly when you factor in the variety of outdoor spaces available for lounging. Our family of 4, including 2 parents and 2 teenagers (17 and 13, a boy and a girl) found all the privacy we needed during the week.
Lastly, certainly not least, Mary was delightful to work with. Responsive and professional, she is a wonderful guide, setting us up with groceries and a cook for the first night of our stay, arranging tours and surfing lessons, recommending restaurants, and places to shop and arranging drivers as needed. She could not have been more helpful.
Our dream is to return some day to this beautiful place by the sea.
I stayed with a friend at Papaya con Leche and had an amazing time. Mary and her staff at Beach Grass made our stay here super relaxing. She helped us with in home cooked meals and booking lots of activities from start to finish. Looking forward to my trip.
My wife and I, along with another couple, just spent a week (3/10 - 3/17/2012) at Casa Papaya Con Leche. What a great house in a beautiful location!
One of our concerns heading there was there was only one bathroom. However, with the outside shower, the four of us made it work.
The house is nicely equipped and furnished.
Mary of Beachgrass rentals is a pleasure to work with.
The location in Rancho Playa Negra is quiet and very private. The beach in front of the house is very rocky but great for tidepools and even some snorkeling at low tide. It is just a very short and pleasant walk to the Hotel Playa Negra and their beach. Good food and great place to hang out at the the beach. Playa Avenella and Lola's is only three (3) miles (5 Ks) away with an awesome surf break! And a little further South is Playa Janquanillal. The day we were there, it was the four of us and another group of 3 couples (6 people) on the entire beach! WE LOVED IT!
One day we road to Tamarindo to do the "tourist" thing, the Catamaran Sunset Booze Cruise on the Marlin Del Rey. It was great fun. Did the souvenir shopping in Tamarindo so got that over with. On our way to Tamarindo, we did stop at the JW Marriott. While truly a beautiful property with a gorgeous pool, I was very happy we were at our very private and secluded Casa Papaya con Leche.
We had also wondered about the name, Papaya con Leche. We found out the meaning quite by accident. One morning, after a nice run to Playa Avellena and back (a 6k run) I made a smoothy of some fresh Papaya. Our milk had frozen, so I threw it in the blender with a little OJ and some pineapple. The color of the Papaya and Milk (Papaya con Leche) matched the paint color of the house Exactly! Oh yea, the smoothy was great! : )
Some recomendations for the owner...some beach chairs would be nice and some hammocks on the porch would be wonderful! Otherwise, the place is pretty perfect for a small group. Enjoy and Pura Vida!
Casa Papaya con Leche is located one and a half hours away from Daniel Oduber International Airport. The house is within walking distance to restaurants (10-15 minutes), beaches (5-10 minutes) and great surfing. Tamarindo is only 30 minutes away, with great shopping, restaurants and night life.
Other Activities: Activities available in the area include zip line canopy tours, ATV tours, horseback riding, surf and stand-up paddle lessons, board rentals, sunset catamaran tours, and deep sea fishing. Farther away but worth visiting are Costa Rica's amazing national parks. Rincon de la Vieja National Park is about 2 hours away, and boasts waterfalls, hot springs, and miles of hiking trails. The cloud forest reserve at Monteverde is about 3 hours away, offering astonishing biodiversity and the largest number of orchids in the world. Lake Arenal and the active volcano Arenal are located about 3 hours away; Volcano Arenal is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with fumaroles, lava flows and almost daily explosive eruptions.
Golf: Hacienda Pinilla, located about 30 minutes from Casa Papaya con Leche, boasts a spectacular 18-hole golf course located right on the Pacific Ocean. Relax at the clubhouse after a round on the most beautiful golf course you've ever played!
