About Margaret Merrill

An avid gardener for most of my life I began to become fascinated with the notion of a tropical garden. For a while I thought adding a wonderful greenhouse to my Connecticut home would satisfy that desire but when I had the chance to actually attempt a garden in the tropics I took it - I hope I have the chance to spend the rest of my life editing and sharing a tropical garden.

Margaret Merrill purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Margaret Merrill chose St John

I chose St. John because it is a Caribbean destination that is easy to get to and from for family and friends as well as myself and because it is American so while there are adjustments aplenty the language, the money, and the laws are familiar - mostly!

What makes this cottage unique

I love to go out in the evening and am so happy I don't have to give a thought to the drive home on this hilly complicated island because I am so close to town. My land is less hilly than most and so I can truly be indoors and out all day - most welcome is some time in the pool followed by a relaxing 15 minutes in the hot tub. My convenient location means I can pick up BBQ at Uncle Joe's or pizza at da Livio and bring it back to my pool deck where family and I dine while the local avian chorus serenades us.

Beautiful, peaceful cottage

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I stayed at Stone Post Cottage for about a week in February.

I have been to St John several times, but this was definitely my favorite place to stay!

It is a very conveniently located, serene spot. SPC is very close to town, yet away from all the hustle and bustle.

The rooms at the cottage are very clean and well decorated, amenities are new, gardens are spectacular! There were lots of flowers in bloom, which attracted butterflies and hummingbirds.

Margaret was a wonderful host providing helpful information and checking in with us daily.

I highly recommend Stone Post Cottage for anyone looking for a restful getaway!

I would stay at this beautiful cottage forever!

  • 5 of 5

I will always remember our wonderful trip to St John largely because of this beautiful cottage. The cottage itself is out of a fairy tale, beautiful views so bright and cheery. Although there is air conditioning we left the doors and windows open and enjoyed the lovely breeze. The gardens are georgeous and I loved watching the humming birds and butterflies that enjoyed the flowers as much as I did. A refreshing pool with so many comfortable places to enjoy the outdoor areas. Margaret is a wonderful host. I would recommend this piece of heaven to anyone and hope we can return again to this beautiful place.

Incredible hospitality & views made our vacation

  • 5 of 5

Booked our stay for Feb 2016 the previous July after speaking at length and in wonderful detail with the owner Maragret. She answered every question and provided great information where I had gaps in our plan.

We were greeted at the ferry with a sign and led up to the SPC in our rental (jeep) we also picked up right at the ferry, like VIPS. After very quick and easy drive to the property we were given the tour in fine detail. The cottage was an incredible sight after our long trip. In addition to the use of the gorgeous pool and hot tub, We would be offered use of the variety of coolers, beach chairs, snorkeling equipment and a shelf in the large fridge and cooler packs in the freezer.

The cottage is so comfortable with beautiful linnens and the softest bath and beach towels I've ever had while traveling. The shower and bed alone are worth every very reasonable penny for the cottage, both are unique, beautiful and spacious.

Each morning we awoke to an amazing sunrise over the pool with crystal views of Chocolate Hole and the hillsides around the property. We were provided with and lovely breakfast of coffee, teas, fresh fruit (including ripe passion fruit in season grown on property!) muffins, bagels, hard boiled eggs, yogurt and granola. Plenty to get you going for a day of adventure.

Any request or question we had was answered promptly and graciously and many suggestions and directions were offered helpfully.

We couldn't have asked for or ordered a better location, venue, or host for our first stay on the island.

We can't wait to return and would happily recommend for any occasion to book and stay at the SPC!!

Thank you Margaret, Patti and Ann! We had the vacation stay we dreamed of and more!

Owner's Response: Thanks so very much for your wonderful review, Shannan. The brand new pillow top mattresses were a splurge but very much worth it according to my guests. And for me, soft soft towels and fresh crisp sheets are a necessity in the tropics - not a luxury - so happy to hear that you truly appreciated these details - and so many other aspects of my beloved home and this beautiful island as well. Very much looking forward to your return visit! Margaret

Best Value St John's Hideaway

Best Value St John's Hideaway!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

This cottage was my life-reviver for 2015! Conveniently located just a few minutes from the ferry dock, the Stone Post Cottage was my home for a week after a tough year in the Big Apple without a break. Sitting in the hot pool while tropical showers sprinkled in the evening just melted the New York tension away, before diving into the lap size pool to further reinvigorate the system. Cooking by barbecue under the moonlight by the pool, while enjoying a cold one becomes a habit you never hope to break. Great clean amenities with privacy, and different viewing balconies overlooking the great views out to sea and other bays makes it even more enticing. Conveniently located just a couple minutes from shopping markets and taxis, and it takes only about 10 minutes to get out to some of the best beaches with the clearest water you will ever see! A great part of your stay here is the warmth of your host Margaret and her tight team that are there in a flash when you need them, or out of sight for your complete privacy if preferred. You would pay hundreds of dollars more for a comparable experience, but still probably not feel as welcome and relaxed as you can at Stone Post Cottage. If you are looking for that great value escape, and you deserve to be around quality nature, beaches and hosts, do yourself a favor and just book here. You will be jelly afterwards from decompressing- and the only regret you will have is having to leave!

I know most of you are searching endlessly for that 'perfect' place to spend a wonderful vacation that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.... well - LOOK NO FURTHER!! Stone Post Cottage is a Treasure! We are repeat visitors to St. John and have stayed in numerous places from resorts to villas. Our Stone Post experience was the best by far!

The Cottage is exactly as described. It is perfectly situated - easy access to town ( YOU WILL NEED A CAR ), quiet and tropical - perched on a hill with a fantastic view out to the ocean. We were met by our lovely caretaker when we got to the island and followed in OUR RENTAL CAR to Stone Post. The cottage was meticulously clean, charmingly furnished, with custom details abound. The bathroom was spacious, up to date hardware with a fantastic shower. Every morning was spent on our balcony with a good cup of coffee looking out across the island. The gardens are full of beautiful tropical plants attracting hummingbirds. I have never seen as many! Make sure you check out the night blooming cactus - STUNNING! On the property is a FULL SIZE LAP POOL that is brilliantly clean that we were fortunate to have to ourselves and a large jacuzzi. The caretaker of the property was wonderful with us and such a pleasure to meet. I also participated in the "Pool Pilates" class which was a blast - made some new friends and learned more about the island - beaches, restaurants e.t.c

We really had such a great experience - very sad to leave. We will definitely be returning to our tiny island home.

Best bang for the buck!

  • 5 of 5

We are a younger aged couple that visited st john for the first time for a friends' wedding. We wanted something close by to our friends' villas, affordable, and romantic and that's what we got! Margaret the owner is a genuine sweet and nice lady that was very helpful for being first time travelers to st john. the views off the cottage are absolutely breath taking! It is a very private propery that offers some awesome extras such as an our door shower when you're getting home from the beach, some snorkeling equipment and beach supplies, a outdoor tiki bar with a blender and grill, and fantastic bathroom which has a huge walk in shower that has the options doors that open open so you can have a awesome private view while you're taking a shower. The possibilities with this cottage are endless. I'm actually kind of dissapointed I didn't spend that much time at the cottage due to being occupied with activities for my friends' wedding and sightseeing but the time we spent there was special for us and we hope to be able to rent it again when we save up to be able to go again. We highly recommend this cottage for an mature adventurous couples looking for a low key affordable romantic getaway =)
