About Margaret Merrill

An avid gardener for most of my life I began to become fascinated with the notion of a tropical garden. For a while I thought adding a wonderful greenhouse to my Connecticut home would satisfy that desire but when I had the chance to actually attempt a garden in the tropics I took it - I hope I have the chance to spend the rest of my life editing and sharing a tropical garden.

Margaret Merrill purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Margaret Merrill chose Cruz Bay

I chose St. John because it is a Caribbean destination that is easy to get to and from for family and friends as well as myself and because it is American so while there are adjustments aplenty the language, the money, and the laws are familiar - mostly!

What makes this cottage unique

I love to go out in the evening and am so happy I don't have to give a thought to the drive home on this hilly complicated island because I am so close to town. My land is less hilly than most and so I can truly be indoors and out all day - most welcome is some time in the pool followed by a relaxing 15 minutes in the hot tub. My convenient location means I can pick up BBQ at Uncle Joe's or pizza at da Livio and bring it back to my pool deck where family and I dine while the local avian chorus serenades us.

Our best trip to St. John

  • 5 of 5

Stone Post Cottage was the perfect place to stay in St. John. It's located close to Cruz Bay but far enough away to have peace and quiet in the most beautiful setting where flora and fauna abound and water views set the background. The owner, Margaret, has thought of EVERYTHING one could possibly need for a stress-free stay. The glistening pool and hot tub were just icing on the cake! Patty and Annie, the care-takers, are kind, friendly and informative and assure good, hot coffee and continental breakfast replete with newly picked passion fruit each day. This is the 5th time my husband and I have visited St. John and Margaret's place made this time, the best time! Thanks so much Margaret, Patty and Annie. We will be back!

Sweet Serenity...

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a lovely week here. The views are beautiful and the pool and hot tub were amenities that we were grateful for. We pretty much felt like we had the place to ourselves--or so it seemed.

The breezes that came through the cottage made the experience even more serene. We slept like babies.

Not far from Cruz Bay made for an easy night out but our favorite nights were using the outdoor kitchen and cooking in. An excellent market is close and we found the prices not bad at all.

We love driving around and seeing all the beautiful beaches.

Margaret was a lovely host and Ann and Patty gave us the most beautiful breakfast spread each and every morning. We wanted for nothing and felt at home in our casual, serene environment. Just like we love it.

There are towels, coolers and chairs to take to the beach. I truly could not think of one thing that I would have changed to make this a better experience for us. We loved St. Johns and we loved Stone Post Cottage!

Traditional Caribbean Charm

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I visit St John every year and we stay at a new place each time. Even though, we stayed at Stone Post Cottage for only 3 nights, we found it a delightful comfortable spot. It has an old style aesthetic and vintage appeal. Beautifully appointed inside and out. It's close proximity to town is nice yet you seem to be nicely tucked in among the gardens. Margaret is on-sight if you need anything as well as the friendly caretakers; Ann and Patty. We would definitely stay here again for a much longer time.

Beautiful, peaceful cottage

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I stayed at Stone Post Cottage for about a week in February.

I have been to St John several times, but this was definitely my favorite place to stay!

It is a very conveniently located, serene spot. SPC is very close to town, yet away from all the hustle and bustle.

The rooms at the cottage are very clean and well decorated, amenities are new, gardens are spectacular! There were lots of flowers in bloom, which attracted butterflies and hummingbirds.

Margaret was a wonderful host providing helpful information and checking in with us daily.

I highly recommend Stone Post Cottage for anyone looking for a restful getaway!

I would stay at this beautiful cottage forever!

  • 5 of 5

I will always remember our wonderful trip to St John largely because of this beautiful cottage. The cottage itself is out of a fairy tale, beautiful views so bright and cheery. Although there is air conditioning we left the doors and windows open and enjoyed the lovely breeze. The gardens are georgeous and I loved watching the humming birds and butterflies that enjoyed the flowers as much as I did. A refreshing pool with so many comfortable places to enjoy the outdoor areas. Margaret is a wonderful host. I would recommend this piece of heaven to anyone and hope we can return again to this beautiful place.

Incredible hospitality & views made our vacation

  • 5 of 5

Booked our stay for Feb 2016 the previous July after speaking at length and in wonderful detail with the owner Maragret. She answered every question and provided great information where I had gaps in our plan.

We were greeted at the ferry with a sign and led up to the SPC in our rental (jeep) we also picked up right at the ferry, like VIPS. After very quick and easy drive to the property we were given the tour in fine detail. The cottage was an incredible sight after our long trip. In addition to the use of the gorgeous pool and hot tub, We would be offered use of the variety of coolers, beach chairs, snorkeling equipment and a shelf in the large fridge and cooler packs in the freezer.

The cottage is so comfortable with beautiful linnens and the softest bath and beach towels I've ever had while traveling. The shower and bed alone are worth every very reasonable penny for the cottage, both are unique, beautiful and spacious.

Each morning we awoke to an amazing sunrise over the pool with crystal views of Chocolate Hole and the hillsides around the property. We were provided with and lovely breakfast of coffee, teas, fresh fruit (including ripe passion fruit in season grown on property!) muffins, bagels, hard boiled eggs, yogurt and granola. Plenty to get you going for a day of adventure.

Any request or question we had was answered promptly and graciously and many suggestions and directions were offered helpfully.

We couldn't have asked for or ordered a better location, venue, or host for our first stay on the island.

We can't wait to return and would happily recommend for any occasion to book and stay at the SPC!!

Thank you Margaret, Patti and Ann! We had the vacation stay we dreamed of and more!

Owner's Response: Thanks so very much for your wonderful review, Shannan. The brand new pillow top mattresses were a splurge but very much worth it according to my guests. And for me, soft soft towels and fresh crisp sheets are a necessity in the tropics - not a luxury - so happy to hear that you truly appreciated these details - and so many other aspects of my beloved home and this beautiful island as well. Very much looking forward to your return visit! Margaret
