About David Horst

30 years ago, I found this beautiful piece of Virginia and built a vacation home for my family. We spent nearly every weekend in the summer enjoying the lake where my kids learned to water ski and my family and friends had fun boating, fishing, jet skiing, tubing. We have had many family and friends gatherings that have given us amazing memories. After retirement, my wife and I relocated to the lake full time in a new house. I began my search for the perfect lake house to rent to people like you to make your own memories here. And so after two years of search, I believe this house offers everything families and friends will need. I want to make your vacation here as wonderful as my memories.

David Horst purchased this house in 2015

Why David Horst chose Huddleston

If you haven't been to Smith Mountain Lake in the Blue Ridge Mountains, you are in for a treat. With 500 miles of shoreline and over 20,000 acres, the lake is formed by the convergence of the Roanoke and Blackwater Rivers with a hydroelectric dam controlling water flow. Blue green clear water is home to striped bass, large mouth and small mouth bass, crappie, blue gills, cat fish and lake trout for the fisherman Or perhaps you just want to soak up the sun on the dock or on a raft. Or just read a book on the deck. Whatever your pleasure, you will surely find it here at 'Tranquility Bay'.

What makes this house unique

The gentle slope to the water, the long winding driveway into the peaceful tranquility of seclusion. The views from nearly every room, deck, patio, and dock are wonderful. The sunsets equally as good. Spending 30 years here has taught me that being in a wide water cove is the best of both worlds......no wakes from boats speeding by on the main channel and wonderful views.

Fantastic Lakefront Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

We just got back last week from our one week stay at Tranquility Bay. This is a lovely vacation rental home. The owners have put so much care into making this a beautiful and relaxing vacation home. The kitchen is extremely well stocked, the bedrooms are spacious and the beds are oh so comfortable, the master bathroom is wonderful, and the pool table and downstairs recreation area are fantastic as well. The location is so peaceful and and even though the weather didn't cooperate most days for us to enjoy the lake, the home provided a great selection of movies and books too. We did get to fish from the dock and I caught a really nice small mouth bass (catch & release that is). We spent a lot of time on the deck just relaxing, enjoying a glass of wine and watching it rain. I highly recommend this wonderful home to anyone looking for a first rate vacation home experience at SML!

Amazing Home and Location

  • 5 of 5

This was the ideal location for our second annual family reunion. For us seven "old timers" it was the perfect spot. A great home with everything we needed, gentle slope down to the lake for our creaking knees, and a beautiful lake house with easy lake access. Someone was out on the lake in the kayaks or paddle boat from sunrise to sunset and it was a joy to watch my three sisters chatter and get re-acquainted as they paddled around the quiet cove. Most meals were out on the deck enjoying the amazing view and sunsets. And an evening around the fire-pit sharing and singing made the week complete. Thanks Dave for being a great host and making your home available for us.

Our stay was great at this property. The owners have provided everything you need & if you find you need something they are very quick to get it to you. The sunsets are beautiful & seeing the deer eating in the front yard was an added treat.

Thanks David & Mary Beth for sharing your beautiful property to those of us who love to come to SML!

The name says it all . . .

  • 5 of 5

This is our second year visiting SML and we decided to stay at Tranquility Bay (we stayed at a different home last year). This property is nothing less than five stars. The house was well stocked with everything it advertises and more. The owner was great to work with and accommodated some of our specific requests (ex. a safe location to park our Harley motorcycle and our boat). We can't wait to stay again next year.

Great house, great host.

  • 5 of 5

Second year we stayed at Tranquility Bay for three weeks. Could not have had a better venue for our family vacation. The home is perfect for all ages and the water front, dock, and toys were fabulous. Everything exceeded our expectations including the concern of our host/owner to assure that we fully enjoyed our stay.

Coming back next year.
