About David Horst

30 years ago, I found this beautiful piece of Virginia and built a vacation home for my family. We spent nearly every weekend in the summer enjoying the lake where my kids learned to water ski and my family and friends had fun boating, fishing, jet skiing, tubing. We have had many family and friends gatherings that have given us amazing memories. After retirement, my wife and I relocated to the lake full time in a new house. I began my search for the perfect lake house to rent to people like you to make your own memories here. And so after two years of search, I believe this house offers everything families and friends will need. I want to make your vacation here as wonderful as my memories.

David Horst purchased this house in 2015

Why David Horst chose Smith Mountain Lake

If you haven't been to Smith Mountain Lake in the Blue Ridge Mountains, you are in for a treat. With 500 miles of shoreline and over 20,000 acres, the lake is formed by the convergence of the Roanoke and Blackwater Rivers with a hydroelectric dam controlling water flow. Blue green clear water is home to striped bass, large mouth and small mouth bass, crappie, blue gills, cat fish and lake trout for the fisherman Or perhaps you just want to soak up the sun on the dock or on a raft. Or just read a book on the deck. Whatever your pleasure, you will surely find it here at 'Tranquility Bay'.

What makes this house unique

The gentle slope to the water, the long winding driveway into the peaceful tranquility of seclusion. The views from nearly every room, deck, patio, and dock are wonderful. The sunsets equally as good. Spending 30 years here has taught me that being in a wide water cove is the best of both worlds......no wakes from boats speeding by on the main channel and wonderful views.

Perfect Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our family was not disappointed with Tranquility Bay. The house was really nice, the bedding and linens, soft and comfy, the kitchen was fully equipped, and we loved the dock. We really only needed to bring ourselves, clothes, food and of course wine :). The dock had kayaks, canoe, paddle board and paddle boat, plus an array of floats, life jackets, bottle huggies, you name it. Lots of chairs to relax on and if you enjoy fishing there were a lot of fish in this part of the cove. We used the fire pit, and loved playing pool. We have nothing negative to say about this vacation home. Also the owners were super nice, one night the blender just quit working, I contacted the owner and the next day he brought us a replacement-now that is service! We ate dinner on the upper deck every night and watched the sunset. We will for sure rent this house again.

If you want to rent a jet ski or boat, we recommend using Bridgewater Marina but the Mariners Landing location. Super close by car and a lot closer by boat, and you can gas up at Mitchell's Marine. This by far was the best location we have had in regards to Marina for rentals.

Hope to be back next year!!!

Loved this home! 😁

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Tranquility Bay. The home is very well furnished and stocked with everything needed. It was great being able to use the boat lift and keep our boat out of the rain. David was very responsive to all my emails and texts. We would highly recommend this home to anyone looking for a SML rental.

Thanks Dave!!

Stop looking...this property has it all !!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 spent 8 nights and 9 relaxing days at this amazing property. The house sits on 2 beautifully landscaped acres which slope gently to the clean, clear water. We spent most days hanging out on the spacious dock lounging on comfortable furniture. The kids had fun paddling around this quiet cove on the kayaks, canoe, and paddle board that were all provided for us. We spent several evenings roasting marshmallows around the fire pit with everything we needed to build a fire also provided for us.

The house is very nicely appointed with comfortable beds, leather furniture, 2 full kitchens and 2 sitting areas with flat screen tvs. We cooked most of our meals and ate outside on the spacious deck. The kitchens were well stocked with all the dishes, utensils, cookware, and appliances, large and small, that you could possibly need. The game tables ( pool, ping pong, foos ball) were fun entertainment on rainy days and evenings.

There was always something for everyone to do, and we didn't want for anything.

Dave, the owner, is a very gracious host. He has gone to great lengths to make sure the house is clean and comfortable and to provide all the comforts of home. If you have a special request, just ask, and he is on top of it. We asked for a corn hole game and roasting skewers, and he dropped them off the next day. Awesome!!! Thanks again Dave.

The last night we were there I took some pictures of the most amazing sun set I've ever seen...what a beautiful end to a very memorable vacation.

We are looking forward to our next visit to Tranquility Bay on SML

Robin, Scott and kids.

Wonderful Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Not our first time at SML but our first time staying at Tranquility Bay. The owners are wonderful! They get back with you with any issues/concerns you may have. The beds are very comfortable in all the rooms not just the master. Having the linens and paper products furnished for you was a first for us as we always had to bring them before. We brought our boat so the walk from the house to the boat dock is just as it shows in the picture. We were able to use the boat lift on one of the nights it got a little stormy. The boat dock storage had all kinds of water toys for your use. We used the kayak on site. There is no sandy beach area so you will need to get in and out of the kayak at the dock. The cove is very quiet with wide water views. The sunsets are great!! Mitchell's Marina is very close to put your boat in the water. We had a great week with great weather. Beautiful place!!

Wonderful Get Away

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at Tranquility Bay in April 2017 and had an absolutely delightful time. The property is beautifully appointed and maintained. The beds are fabulous. The location on the lake is very nice - a peaceful cove, but easy access to the main channel. This was our first visit to SML and will definitely come back. We had a cold rain for the first three days of our trip, but were very cozy in the great room in front of the fire or enjoying playing pool, ping pong, or fuse ball. Once the rain cleared and spring weather returned, we enjoyed spending time on the main deck off the living room or on the dock. We did not want for anything....Dave is the best property owner - he is absolutely devoted to ensuring that your stay at Tranquility Bay is just that - tranquil! We loved Tranquility Bay!
