About Janet Eby

Judy and Seth Burgess love the Big Bend. Seth is originally from Rhode Island and Judy is a native Texan. Seth is a retired from Equimax, USA, Inc., a company he started in 1986 to get jobs and horse people together all across the USA. Judy is an ordained Episcopal Priest. We currently care for three dogs, four horses and a donkey.

Why Janet Eby chose Texas

We lived in this location for 15 years until moving to the Ruidoso, New Mexico area when Judy was called to a new church. We chose this area because Judy wanted to get back to living in Texas and Seth wanted to live in the mountains. You won't find a wilder more remote place in Texas. The Big Bend area is truly the ultimate getaway spot.

What makes this house unique

Judy always said she wanted 'land lots of land.' On 217 acres, you can ride your horse, hike, and explore the wonders the desert fauna and flora without evening leaving the property. During your stay, you may see mule deer, aoudad sheep, coyotes, mountain lions (pretty rare), and of course all sorts of birds and small animals.

Excellent View and Very Well Maintained But no communication from Owner

  • 4 of 5

Great View and beautiful place. Very well equipped with all the needs you need. Kitchen is very well equipped. Few things that need attentions is once you enter to the gate (especially when its dark) you need to make immediate left to get to the house. We went straight and had to turn back basically it is on the direction that the owner sends but who is going to look when cell phone signal is really weak. The owner needs to put a sign or something where to turn. Second we called the owner to get some information about stores and food no response. Called the owner 4 times 3 from the house phone and 1 form my personal number. I believe it should be a common courtesy to return the call back especially when a family is new to this place and have no idea. Other than this issues this place is great and good for families to stay. We might consider renting it again but lets see.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your positive review. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay and found the house to be scenic and well equipped. We take great pride in providing comfortable and enjoyable accommodations. Regarding your stated concerns, we are a little confused. After renting this house for five years, this is the first time anyone has indicated having any trouble finding the property. Regardless, we will look into adding some sort of sign or marker at the turn you mentioned. As for not returning your calls, we regret that we never received any calls or messages from you. We provide all of our guests with four numbers for reaching us. Our business, our home, and both of our cell phones. All four numbers have voice mail and call logs. We never received any messages and none of the four call logs show a record of any calls from you during your stay. We would certainly have been eager to assist you if we had known you had any questions or concerns. We do hope you return to the area and stay with us again in the future. Thanks, Janet and Daryl Eby, managers

Definite 5 Stars!

  • 5 of 5

The Laughing Horse Retreat was more than we expected! The accommodations were excellent; everything we could possibly need was available. The retreat was clean, comfortable and very well stocked. Although we had a great time at Big Bend -hiking and exploring - we had just as much fun and relaxation on the Laughing Horse property. The view from the back patio was breathtaking. We are already planning and looking forward to our next stay.

Great location, horse corrals, well water (in the desert), proximity to Study Butte and the parks yet seclusion from everyone else, great people managing the place (Janet and Daryl), what more could you want?! We keep coming back....

Wonderful Escape and Great location for Big Bend!

  • 5 of 5

This was the best "stocked" rental we have ever stayed at! Everything we needed was there, soap, paper towels, laundry, huge selection of shelf stable spices and such. More towels than we could ever use, which is a nice change from most places that leave only a few. The property was very clean and well maintained. We spent most of our time in BBNP. We took a quick trip in Terlingua as well to the local bar/shop. The boys (7 & 10) greatly enjoyed exploring the property and after dark, they loved watching netflix. The only thing I would change is to make lighter or matches for BBQ grill easier to find. We couldn't get the starter to work and never did find any. We had a good laugh and sandwiches, but that was the one thing we forgot to pack! Thanks again for your wonderful hospitality! We hope to be back and would love to stay at your lovely home again.

Perfect first trip to Big Bend National Park

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Big Bend National Park although we have lived in Texas for more than a dozen years. Our daughter from New York joined us for some hiking and sight seeing. The location of Laughing Horse Retreat to the park couldn't have been better. The property surrounding the retreat was beautiful and the house was comfortable and came with everything we could think of needing. We were treated to a blanket of snow our first night at the retreat and park, but the roads were passable in no time. Janet called to check-in with us to make sure we arrived safely and that we were warm and comfortable at the house. The views and landscape were beautiful, and the birds and wildlife were an added treat to our visit. We can't say enough about the star gazing either! Our last night was completely cloud-free and the stars were breathtaking! We can't wait to plan another trip to the Big Bend area and Laughing Horse Retreat is absolutely on our list of where to stay!
