Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

My family recently stayed at this house. I believe everyone was comfortable and had a great time. The location is great! Very close to Lake Michigan, (just a walk down the street), and just a short drive into Silver Lake and Pentwater. Seems just as advertised.

Great Location!

  • 4 of 5

This is a great location so close to the Dunes. The kids loved this place! They were able to hike the dunes right next to the backyard. This place accommodated my entire family and we didn't feel crowded what so ever. I can't wait to go back. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was just because this place is not able to house my wheelchair bound mother in law due to the stairs of which is disclosed in this web site. Other than that we loved it.

Another amazing week at Sahara Sands!

  • 5 of 5

This time we stayed, we had friends staying in the house right across the street (same owners rent the house across the street too, so it's great for big groups who want to stay near each other but can't all fit in one house). Staying in the house this week were four couples and six kids from 2-6. We all had space to spread out if we needed to. Some of the friends across the street even came over a few nights for drinks and to sit around the fire on the back patio, and we didn't feel cramped at all!

On rainy days the kids had fun with the air hockey table downstairs and watching movies on the huge tv downstairs as it got dark.

Yes, there is only one shower, but the 14 of us have never had a problem all getting our showers in without any frustration. (And we've stayed there before with more adults--still no problem). Plus, the big tub upstairs is great for giving the kids a bath if someone else is in the shower downstairs. While the kids play in the water, parents can enjoy the lovely view of lake Michigan through the window above!

The picnic table outside is huge and can fit most of our group, plus there is another table on the deck which seats four, a kitchen table inside that can fit 4-6 (although we've often fit more people for poker games!), AND a big table in the basement.

While the kids played I loved sitting on the deck, reading a book in the sun. Later, we rented a Jeep at Parrot's Landing and drove around the dunes. Staying at Sahara Sands is the perfect combination of relaxation and fun!

We really had a wonderful time. I just got home yesterday and I can't wait to go back!

Great location! The house on the other hand...

  • 3 of 5

The location of this house is what made our stay fun. If you are not a fan of loud ORVs this is not the house for you. They will be blaring all day long, sun up to sun down. This didn't bother us at all and was actually a lot of fun to watch since the ORV dune course is right in the backyard. You are a short walk from Lake Michigan and a couple steps from the dunes. We walked all the way to silver lake from the house. Very cool little jog over there through the dunes.

The house itself leaves something to be desired. Although it says 2 bathrooms the upstairs has a bathtub only which leaves you with only one shower for however many people are staying. This wasn't a huge deal for us but for a large group it could be trouble.

The living area is nice, has newer couches that recline and there is a decent flat panel tv with directv hooked up. The bedrooms on the main level are small and cramped. Not much breathing room in either of them. Upstairs is nice and has a small balcony. Downstairs was very musty and smelled like it had been wet for a while. The odor was unpleasant enough for some of us that we avoided it entirely. There is a washer and dryer down there which is convenient.

The deck is amazing and large and the gas grill worked great and was where we cooked most of the time. Downside is the outdoor furniture looks like it was taken out of a goodwill pile. Not comfortable at all, the only place you could really sit down and eat comfortably was at the picnic table.

Lastly, the house sits up high on a dune and the walk up the hill to the house is a large one. About 50 stairs, maybe more. Bringing the suitcases, cooler, food, kayaks and whatever else you have up the stairs is not a lot of fun. For older people this could be a deal breaker and is something to consider. There is a lot of room for parking but if you bring a trailer with a boat or ORV, kayaks, etc. it would be hard to maneuver in and out with the narrow road and short parking area.

All in all I would give this place a 5.5 out of 10 and that is mostly because of the location. If you enjoy walking the dunes and watching all of the off roaders do their thing in the backyard you will love it. The house is small and cramped, especially if you have 10 or more people. You may be able to sleep that many or more but there's a long line for the shower in the morning and trying to cram 4 people into one of the smaller rooms is no fun.

Owner's Response: YEP! Everything we highlight on our web site, no!!! its not for the elderly or infirm, we even show the steps and highlight the actual count...30 not 50. Only thing they forgot to mention is the luxury Whirlpool spa in the upstairs bath, with beautiful views of Lake Michigan!!! We try to meet the demographic needs of every guests, but that's impossible. When we allow for more that 12 people we assume they would stagger their shower's. Shoot!! my daughter alone can use up all the hot water. So for $7.40 a person it cost them to stay at our home, staggering shower times is little to ask. We would rather not have so many people in this house at one time, but we wanted to meet the needs of this guest. We do offer flat screens, leather furniture, Weber WIFI, awesome views of the dunes, and Lake Michigan, a hop skip and a jump to 'toes in water' all for just $2900 a week!

The best place in Silver Lake!

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed at Sahara Sands once a year for about seven years. I wouldn't stay anywhere else for my Silver Lake vacations and I always tell my friends that they should stay there too! The house is welcoming and has room for several families--when I am there I'm usually with three other families plus mine and we never feel like we are on top of each other. The water heater is tankless, so we never run out of hot water! (Just wait till you see the upstairs bath!!)

The deck overlooks the sand dunes and has tons of space for eating, relaxing, and watching the vehicles on test hill. From the other side of the deck, the views of Lake Michigan are simply breathtaking, no matter the weather.

The house isn't on the main drag in Silver Lake, but it's just a few minutes away. We can quickly run to the store for anything we need. It's easy to get to Mac Woods Dune Ride, Dune Town Shops, mini golf, go carts, ice cream cones, and more. I absolutely love the drive through the woods before arriving. It's like a gateway that leads me to my favorite place in the world!

The home is clean and has enough storage for all of our food while we are there. It has a big kitchen with enough room and supplies for all of us.

My family usually stays in the room downstairs (in the walkout basement); we love feeling the breeze come through the window from the sand dunes at night. The patio off of the sliding doors is a great spot to unwind and enjoy the peace and beauty of the dunes in the evening (and the excitemend during the day!). There's a big table downstairs where the kids love to color or do puzzles.

A quick walk down the quiet street leads to another gorgeous view of Lake Michigan, and a staircase that leads to the beach. The beach is clean and generally quiet, with lots of space to play. The water is very shallow for about 100 feet so it really is a great place for the kids to enjoy the water.
