About Richard and Margaret Wilson
Richard and Margaret enjoy the natural environment and relaxed summer lifestyle around Wild Goose Pond. Wild Goose Pond provides endless opportunities to observe the changing 'face' of nature, paddle on the water, soak up the sun and simply relax. Evenings are charmed with gorgeous sunsets. A pair of loons return each summer with enchanting calls and delightful entertainment. The last successful loon chick to hatch on Wild Goose Pond was July, 2016. Beech Cottage became available in 2013; the property is adjacent to the owner's summer residence. The former owner loved this cottage and was devoted to the preservation of nature. She lived here year-round and was a friend to all of the squirrels, birds and critters that frequent the pond. She also loved hearing the laughter and squeals of happy children and families during the summer months. We hope to maintain her legacy to ensure that the cottage will continue to be friendly to the natural environment and its guests. We trust that Beech Cottage will be a catalyst for regeneration, fun times and serendipitous happy memories for all of its visitors!
Richard and Margaret Wilson purchased this Cottage in 2008
Why Richard and Margaret Wilson chose Pittsfield
Most of the private cottages are on the East side of Wild Goose Pond and were built in the late 40s and 50s by GIs for their families; many have remained with those families for decades. The Beech Cottage was built in 1986. A spring-fed brook runs through the property on the South side but usually dries up before summer ends. The Beech trees surrounding the cottage provide shelter and food for the birds and squirrels, a beautiful canopy for picnics beside the water and a reason for its name--Beech Cottage. Many folks fish on the pond morning and evening, fishing for bass and pickerel is a favorite for guests! Sitting on the dock or deck in the evening offers a gorgeous view of the serene sunsets. The wood burning stove makes the living area cozy on cool Spring or Fall mornings. Beech Cottage is adjacent to Wilson's Retreat; since it was next door, they purchased it when it became available.
What makes this Cottage unique
This road is 'less traveled'. After leaving the First NH Turnpike and driving to the graveled road that leads to the water, anticipation heightens as you approach this 'piece of heaven' hidden so close to the hustle-bustle of everyday life. The clamor soon fades--life is blessed on Wild Goose Pond!

Great vacation at Beech Cottage
My husband and I just returned from a great vacation at Beech Cottage on Wild Goose Pond. We were greeted by Margaret, the owner, with a warm and deliciousness homemade blueberry breakfast cake. Margaret was very nice and very helpful, and she was only a phone call away for any questions that came up.
I was pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness and condition of the cottage. We were very comfortable , and had all the amenities that we needed.
We live only 1 1/2 hours away so we were able to have some day visitors as well as overnight guests. Our grandchildren loved fishing off the dock as well as from the canoe. They caught plenty of perch. Swimming was also a favorite of theirs. The men enjoyed fishing and my husband caught a good sized large mouth bass as well as some pickerel.
We also played lots of card and board games on the large deck overlooking the pond.
We had such a wonderful time, and we look forward to returning next year. We highly recommend Beech Cottage for your next vacation!
P.S. A BIG added bonus is that the owners will dispose of the trash and garbage for you if you will separate it for them.
Great cottage - relaxing and quiet location!
What a fantastic location. The lake is amazing. I enjoyed waking to four beautiful loons each morning. The cottage is very comfortable and clean. Thanks for everything - can't wait to return next summer!
Thanks for understanding about our being absent so we could attend JR's family reunion, Christina. We're very happy that you enjoyed your time here, that everything went well and that we can meet you next year when you return! Looking forward to seeing the pics you sent (will forward them to our AZ computer...our DSL service here takes forever...or times out). Love it when our guests send pics of fun times that we can share on Homeaway.
We had a great time. The house was well equipped with anything you would need for cooking. The owner was fabulous. The fishing was great. We especially loved listening to the loons. Will definitely go back.
Thanks so much so coming! We look forward to seeing you next year!
Beech Cottage @ Wild Goose Pond
My wife and I stayed here last week. Just us, no kids and no grandkids! I think we only mentioned them once. For a peaceful stay this is the place to be! Margaret was most helpful in getting us settled. She was a great host! This camp has everything you need for some R and R. The place was immaculate inside and out with just enough modern conveniences to make your stay very comfortable. We will be back!
It was a pleasure having you here. We're always happy when others enjoy this "living with nature" environment as we do. Look forward to seeing you next year!
Quiet Camp On A Small Pond
If you're a family looking for a quiet retreat but don't mind close neighbors this is for you. If you want absolute quiet and privacy this may not be the place for you. Otherwise it is clean and you have everything you need including the awesome dock and good fishing. Really nothing negative to say and the owners were easy to deal with and very nice.
Wild Goose Pond is a 118 acre body of water that averages 14' deep, 20' at its deepest. The camps/cottages are on a private road, lots are .6 acres or more. Guests delight in the 103' of waterfront, private dock, canoe or kayak and fishing. Beech Cottage guests usually enjoy the seclusion from the hustle-bustle of city life, the beauty of nature, and the presence of other friendly residents in nearby camps/cottages.
Peaceful retreat devoid of wifi/tech "noise" ... ahhhhh, tranquility!
What a nice area Strafford/Northwood New Hampshire is!
The Wilson's place was perfect for us.
Comfortable bath and kitchen (not the sometimes "quaint, i.e., awkward" facilities offered by some cabins).
Wonderful view of lake from house, and this lake is so tranquil, not one of those where boaters are tooling around all day in their noisy motorboats.
Very stable, secure dock with steps, even, leading right into the lake: perfect for swimming!
I loved that there was no wifi, no cable/network TV, no cell service.
The Wilsons do have a very nice TV in the house for guests to use along with about a dozen movies to play.
(We watched one called "Mud" last night that was TERRIFIC!)
Try the yummy new restaurant (paleo, gluten-free, organic kind-of-place) in Northwood called Umami. De-lish!
Last note: the roads (all packed dirt) coming into the rental were in EXCELLENT shape, no ruts, easy driving.
Thanks for the kind words. Umami is new; I will add it to the guests' list of local restaurants! About the movie, guests often "pay it forward" by leaving movies, toys, toiletries and/or food for future guests...so we thank them! The lake and its population is, indeed, tranquil most of the time; holidays like Fourth of July, more lively--nature is always exciting! Hope to see you next year!
Ten minutes off fast-paced Hwy 4, Beech Cottage is nestled in the quiet woods on the shore of Wild Goose Pond....OR take a break from fun in the water--Northwood Meadow State Park (2-mile walking loop) is 15 min East, Concord is 30 minutes West, Portsmouth is 40 min East, White Mountain attractions 2-3 hours North
