Hi my name is Shelly. I grew up just down the road in York, Maine and raised my children (2 sons) through their younger years in Wells, Maine. When they became school aged we moved to Kennebunk were I have worked for the school system for 17 years. I have summers free which leaves me time to manage a HomeAway property for the summer. In past years I have worked seasonally for fine resorts and know what guests need and want. I consider myself to be adventurous and know the good spots to hike, bike, surf etc. I look forward to meeting my guests and am ready to assist in any way that I can :)

Kennebunk has a great sense of community and the people are very warm and friendly. You can feel the vibe the minute you make your way to Main Street! It is very apparent that it is a community that cares. The beaches and quaint Kennebunkport are most likely the two top reasons the Kennebunks are so popular during the summer season.

What makes this house unique

I fell in love with this home because of all the light that filters into the living space. With so many windows in such a small house it is always bright and sunny and welcoming! All interior lighting are on dimmer switches to enhance the mood at different times of the day. All floors are wood and in the bathroom tile that looks like wood! The layout of rooms makes a lot of sense too. The back yard is private and is a great place to unwind and cook on the grill. A covered screened in porch adds to the living space. The gas cooking inside is also a treat. There are all brand new high end appliance in the kitchen which makes cooking fun. Also a washer and dryer in the basement and some storage in the garage for any recreational extras (bicycles, kayaks, surfboards etc) you'd like to bring along.

  • The bathroom has been recently renovated and features tile that looks like old barn boards and a pebble floor. The shower head can be removed for good rinsing capabilities. There is also a deep dish antique sink with backsplash that is not featured in the photo and a 4 foot built-in medicine cabinet for plenty of space and a gorgeous granite countertop for the overflow. The granite will be installed in 3 weeks so I will update the photo once that is done. Also, there is a window that overlooks the backyard in the bathroom which lets in loads of light and a dimmer switch to make those middle of the night trips to the bathroom more comfortable :)

  • There are two bedrooms. One has a queen sized bed and the other has 2 singles. Both have ample space to hang close in closets and bureaus to keep folded clothing organized. Hardwood floors throughout. One bedroom faces the back yard and the other the residential street (Parsons Street).

Noisy Construction Work

First I would like to say that Kennebunk is very nice if rather quiet, with plenty of local amenities. It's very pretty, and everyone was very friendly. The house is within 1-5 minutes of all the amenities.

Secondly, the house is beautifully appointed. It has been recently been refurbished to a very high standard and to exquisite taste. Eveything you could hope is there down to high end toiletries. (apart from the all important corkscrew! which i suspect someone broke and did not tell Shelly)

However our stay was marred by ongoing construction work by a demolition company in the lot directly behind the garden. The noise varied throughout the day starting approx 7:45 am until around 4pm. When we arrived at the property the noise was particularly bad with a digger loading masonry into a dumpster. We contacted Shelly who was very pleasant and apologetic stating that she had not thought this would be an issue and so had not felt she needed to inform us in advance. Having travelled from the UK for our annual vacation we would certainly not have stayed here if we knew there was to be contruction work. We specifically chose the property as it had a garden (yard) as we planned to spend some time relaxing in the fresh air. As it happened we hardly used the screened porch or the garden before 5pm. I asked Shelly if we could have a refund so that we could stay elsewhere however she refused. Sorry Shelly, but I feel that you did nto handle this well - To claim that this is normal "town noise" and that you didnt feel you needed to inform us in advance is disingenuous at best. We were not even offered any financial compensation, and homeaway/VRBO insurance specifically excludes construction.

I realise it is not the owner's fault when a neighbour undertakes noisy work, but at a minimum i think you should contact renters and inform them - offering them a change to cancel and rebook - or agree to a reduced rate.

We will come back to Maine but sadly not to this property.

Owner's Response: I apologize for any inconveniences Damian's family endured during their stay in Kennebunk at my property. I take great pride in my property and so appreciate the kind words regarding the house itself. I do not live on site and while I knew construction may be going on throughout the summer, as plans to bring a family restaurant to the center of Kennebunk develops, I was not aware the construction would be taking place on the outside of the building. I was under the impression the construction was going to take place internally. When Damian called I followed up with the construction crew to ensure they did not plan to work earlier than 8am and later than 4 pm. I thought this compromise was reasonable. Most guests take day trips and so would not be affected by it. I did email Damian several times throughout the months leading up to his stay asking if he had questions about the house and/or the area and he had none. My future guests will be very happy when the restaurant is complete as it will be an amazing place for families to dine!

Great for Families

Our family of four greatly enjoyed our stay. We were traveling with two young children and found the house to be quite child friendly. We appreciated the ability to easily walk into town for meals. The park down the street hosts free concerts in the summer and there is a playground nearby. Shelly was very responsive to questions before / during our stay. The house was as described and contained all the necessities for a comfortable stay. The backyard and back porch were highlights and we spent plenty of time there enjoying the shade.

Lovely place. Great location. Great price.

This is our second year at 1 Parsons and, again, we highly recommend it to others. We have three little children (6, 4 & 2.5) and the house worked perfectly for us. There is a great screened-in porch where we had meals, read and did puzzles; a fenced-in backyard where we played outside; a washing machine; a fun shower; and (within a short walk) a grassy park, an awesome playground, an ice cream shop (with gelato) and a funky toy store. Also, it is about a 10 minute drive from an adorable beach that is never crowded, has cool tidal pools, is small enough to let little kids run around, and has a good playground.

With bigger kids, more than two might start to get crowded in the house. But with kids our size, there was plenty of space.

Also, the owner is super-helpful and friendly.

Fabulous!

Our family of 4 thoroughly enjoyed our time here. From using the modern and spacious kitchen to prepare lobster dinners which we enjoyed on the screened in, bug-free porch to the comfy beds, to the beach toys and chairs we used every day, the owner has thought of everything. The whole place is tastefully decorated and ideally located. We enjoyed walking around the bunk and being a quick drive to the beach. We have already booked again for next year and we can't wait to come back!
