About Belves : Famous as being the ‘town of seven bell towers’

The house's central village location enables you to walk to local amenities including, a bakery, butcher, small supermarket, delicatesen and fine restaurants and bars. There are a couple of great restaurants in town that offer great service, excellent three course meals for under 25 Euros and have a very good wine list.

The medieval village stands on a rocky spur above the Nauze valley on the skirts of the Bessede forest. In the fortified village you can see the Tour de l’Auditeur (11th century), medieval belfry (15th century) and walls (11th century), a 14th century castle, and the city hall. The market square (market every Saturday morning), with its five hundred years old pillars and the pillori-irons to which prisoners used to be chained.

'Night market' every Wednesday (July-August). Take your own plates and enjoy the food stalls and live music.

In the heart of the medieval village are underground cave dwellings. Discover the interior of 8 caves and learn many details about the life of the cave dwellers who lived in the caves up till the 18th century. Unique in the Dordogne and open all year round.

One of the highlights of Belves is its position on a rock outcrop, overhanging the valley of the river Nauze, and the views across open countryside from the town. The roads along the Dordogne river are charming with striking views.

There is a great deal to explore in the surrounding villages, chateaux's, monasteries and caves.

Canoeing and kayaking along the Dordogne river at various locations only a short drive away.

An idyllic medieval experience

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent a week in this amazing property and absolutely loved it! The house is an authentic and beautiful 14th century structure with modern, updated kitchen and baths and comfy furnishings. We ate our breakfast each morning on the balcony with a postcard view of the village of Belves, and ended each evening with a glass of wine on the same balcony. The house is divided over three floors with the communal space in the center, one bedroom up and one bedroom downstairs at street level. The medieval watch tower is accessible via a small bridge from the central living space/balcony area. The house included everything that we needed. Patricia was even nice enough to do a little shopping for us for dinner since our late flight to Bordeaux meant that we arrived after the shops were closed. The center of Belves is a 5 minute walk from the house and we enjoyed a lively marché nocturne with delicious food there on Wednesday evening. Belves is a great location for exploring the Dordogne and I can highly recommend this house!

Some words of caution, though, if you're not good with stairs or you have small children, this is not the rental for you as there are three semi-circular stairways, some with rather narrow treads. Other than that...perfect.
