Sea Ranch - Historic Retreat at Hammonds Meadow
Steeped in rich California history, Sea Ranch peacefully sits on 4 acres of prime Montecito coastal land; an easy walk to 3 beautiful beaches and Montecito's Lower Village. On this same land, the native Chumash Indians lived in the village named Shalawa. In the mid 1800's the property was converted to rich farm land. Today, the vast open spaces have been maintained, and the original footprint of the carriage house barn has been thoughtfully preserved.
Enter the property through private wooden gates on a street named for the family who owned the property at the turn of the century. Statuesque eucalyptus, palms and oak trees stand sentry around this very private property. Rolling lawns, shaded sitting areas, lush tropical gardens, and a vast "park-like" backyard paint a rich landscape; setting the tone for a very special experience. Walking trails and wooded paths lead to the beach and to a legendary Montecito surf spot known as Hammonds Reef.
This completely renovated residence is rich in warmth and rustic ambiance, while offering every modern convenience and upscale amenity possible. Throughout the home, cedar wood planks and beams from the original structure have been thoughtfully recycled. A combination of waxed white oak floors, French reclaimed terra cotta tile and unique doors and windows add to the impeccable craftsmanship of this exquisite property.
The Kitchen is everything a gourmet chef expects with professional appliances that include a 6-burner Wolf range, wine cooler, coffee station, Sub-zero refrigerator and 3 dishwashers for effortless meals and entertaining. The custom banquette with expanding table tops creates two separate smaller eating areas or expands for larger groups and family-style dining. The expansive views of the pool area and surrounding grounds outside become the perfect backdrop to this comfortable and welcoming space.
In the Living Room, soaring beam ceilings of cedar rise above a massive 2 story sandstone fireplace. This fireplace was fashioned around the original blacksmith's furnace structure in the carriage house. French doors flank this inviting room; one leading to the pool and expansive backyard, another leading to a private garden with a soothing fountain.
The Media Room adjacent to the Living Room can be closed off with pocket doors. A 65" high definition TV is the focal point of the room. This is the quintessential gathering spot for movie nights, lazy sports-filled weekends, or for keeping busy kids entertained with the integrated Xbox-360 system.
The first-floor Master Bedroom is located off the Family Room. It boasts artisan handcrafted closet doors, built-in drawers, and brightly colored appointments. The Master Bathroom is special with handmade Italian tile covering the dual headed shower and his/her vanity.
Up the stairs, in what was originally the farm's water tower, is the second Master Suite with a pleasing view of the backyard and pool. You can expect many restful nights in the queen-size bed under the high open beam ceilings.
From here, ascend another set of stairs to enjoy views of the lush landscape from the top of the water tower. The soaring truss-and-beam ceilings are the crowning feature of this space which enjoys views of the Santa Ynez mountains, the extensive grounds, and the Southern coastline.
In a wing off the Kitchen is a third Master Suite with queen-size bed and en suite Bathroom; the other with two twin beds and adjacent Hall Bathroom. If you must, there is a convenient office nook just perfect for doing bit of work, but don't work too hard, there is too much to see and do outside!
Separate from the main house, offering privacy and flexibility, are two additional cottages with kitchen amenities and full bathrooms. Formerly the barn, the one bedroom Pool Cottage rests in the shade of mature oak trees. French doors from both the Living Room and Bedroom open to the backyard with pool views. The Garden Cottage, a quaint bougainvillea covered studio, has a full Kitchen and is easily accessible from the inner driveway courtyard. Either cottage is an excellent option for separate families, or, guests seeking a hideaway all their own.
There are laundry facilities at the Main House, Garden Cottage and the Pool House.
An outdoor Kitchen features a 5-zone grill with rotisserie, ice maker, refrigerator and dishwasher and is fully stocked with dishes and service pieces to make setting an outdoor table colorful and easy! Dine al-fresco at the large farm table under canvas canopy with heaters and lights that create ambiance and a bit of warmth on cool nights. Outdoor Living Rooms with plenty of comfortable seating offer any number of places to enjoy the star-studded skies at night, or, a nap during the day!
The amenity-rich list continues with a bocce ball court, built-in ground level trampoline and an outdoor heated shower. Two fire pits add a warm glow to the banquette seating and covered outdoor Living Room. Comfortable year-round outdoor living is the goal of this fabulous property. Extensive walking paths and multitudes of peaceful vignettes dot this picture perfect property.
The ultimate "kid experience" has been created - a fully enclosed park with swings, play structure, A-frame playhouse for tiny tots, and even a horseshoe pit for adults to have some fun while keeping an eye on the activity. Everyone gets to be a kid! Plenty of bikes are provided, as well, to go out and explore the neighborhoods of Montecito, when guests can pull themselves away from all there is to do at Sea Ranch.
The deep blue pool with lap lane, built-in 10 person spa, and Baja shelf is the focal point of the grounds. A convenient Pool House has a full bath and dressing room, along with a washer and dryer for washing beach towels and swimwear. As the final outdoor touch, a 50" flat screen TV is mounted above the outdoor wood burning fireplace.

I have to say, having stayed at beautiful properties in Santa Barbara, none compare to Sea Ranch. The property makes you feel like you're on a retreat. The decor is impeccable and the property is amazing, from fire-pits to a built-in trampoline and a gorgeous pool it is paradise. Plus you can conveniently walk to Montecito village or to butterfly beach (which may be the most beautiful beach in Santa Barbara). I can't wait to go back next year!
Recently stayed at this luxurious property for a family reunion of 12 : 9 adults and 3 kids (ages 9-14) for 3 nights. We had the best vacation ever. The only time we left was to go to get groceries. The property is even larger than you can imagine from the photos. The kids loved to run outside and play in the pool, swing, play ping pong, bocce, ride bikes, trampoline, pick berries, and hang out in the media room (there's even xbox tho we didn't use it) and tower. The accomodations were spotlessly clean and the grounds were beautiful. It was a very relaxing trip for everyone. There were many comfortable places to hang out and a sound system throughout. There was plenty of room to spread out, but also room to eat together at the same kitchen table inside, as well as outside. The kitchen was large and easy to cook for the whole group. There was every kitchen item available, including excellent Calphalon pans, sharp knives, and a Wolf 6 burner range for my cooking husband, and a built in coffee/espresso machine for the caffeine addicts. We were met by the very friendly and helpful caretaker, Robert, who gave a complete tour of the property and instructions for all the gadgets (pool heating, sound, gas fireplaces, etc.) including the private walk to the beach. The entire property and experience reflects an attention to detail that I have not encountered in previous rentals, and the historic renovation is just spectacular. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing, beautiful setting with a large family group.
