Enjoy a piece of Cliff Island history by staying at Grey Ledge Cottage (formerly known as the Thompson House). Rolling surf, lobster boats, and a bell buoy are the tranquil sounds that you can expect to hear each morning while vacationing at Grey Ledge Cottage. Relax in one of the porch rockers and sip your morning coffee while enjoying the beautiful views. Grey Ledge Cottage was first built in 1890, with many additions and improvements through the years, the cottage has kept its old cottage style and feel. The interior features include a full kitchen with lobster pots, a beautiful stone fireplace with wood-burning stove, a cottage book and video library, and gorgeous water views. Outside lends to playing in the yard, resting on the decks and porches, fishing off our private dock, and enjoying hammocks around the grounds. Our private beach and cove is wonderful for swimming while the rocky shore is perfect for discovering sea glass, shells, driftwood, and pottery from days gone bye.


Grey Ledge Cottage is located on the western shore and has beautiful views of Hope Island, Harpswell to the north and amazing sunsets. The cottage is a 3-minute walk from the ferry and square.

Island Amenities:

If you desire tide pooling and larger beaches, Cliff Island's “back cove” is the perfect destination. Socialize and swim in the warm waters of Griffin's Cove. Tennis is available at the square on the clay court. Pearl's offers sandwiches, ice cream and sundries. There is a public library rich with literature, both past and current with a special section upstairs devoted to the history of Cliff Island. A.C.E. (Athletics, Conservation and Education) ball field on the island, which accommodates outside recreation such as volleyball, baseball and island community outings. ACE puts on a summer program for kids of all ages.

At the end of the day, sit on the porch to watch the most dramatic sunsets while enjoying peaceful island living at Grey Ledge.

Surrounding Area:

Ferries are available to explore the neighboring islands in Casco Bay that offer recreational centers, golf, restaurants and additional beaches. Or you may head back to the mainland on the frequent ferry service for all Portland has to offer: Portland's Old Port district: Shopping, Antiquing, Restaurants, Theaters, and Museums. Small day trips can take you to the outlets in Freeport for shopping at its best or hiking in the surrounding area.


The Island is serviced by Casco Bay Lines. We are the last stop on their year-round scheduled service. The ride to the island takes approximately 1 1/2 hours with stops at 4 other islands. Water Taxis are available for a flat rate and take approximately 25 minutes.

Fabulous Ocean-front easy-breezy living

We've been twice and hope to return again soon. It's a beautiful spot that cozies up to the ocean; a gorgeous old family cottage that has been lovingly restored and which welcomes visitors young and old. The owners are attentive and have done wonders to continue the updates to the building and the land. The place also sports the best golf cart on the island. And there are numerous cubbies inside and out that you can escape to and find your inner peace--including the hammock above the cliff, the spot of land looming over the surf where I did my morning yoga, and the newly restored dock: all perfect places to view the porpoise, sailboats, and lobster boats. Plus: the kitchen is well equipped, there are plenty of towels and sheets, and the beds are comfy.

Per Maine state law effective 1/1/2016, an 9% tax will be added to the final bill. Deposit is required to hold space, there is also a cleaning fee of $100, security deposit $500 (includes pet deposit, if applicable). As for the security deposit, all or some may be returned depending on condition of the house/property. 50% of Rental Rate to reserve date. Security deposit required with full payment.
