Amazing location - just a 5 minute walk to the North End or Quincy Market. Quality of the boat was better than we expected. Spotlessly clean, extra towels and pillows and high quality bed linens. Boat is actually at the end of the dock so has an uninterrupted view of the harbor. Our son loved the sleeping cubbies! Only suggestion is some kind of umbrella or bimini for the deck as there is no shade and as it was a 90 degree weekend, we had to wait until nightfall to sit up top.
We were 5 adults who stayed two nights aboard the White Elephant in early May so that we could attend a college graduation. The weather was not ideal but we were very cozy on the boat. As stated in a previous review, there is a fair bit of walking involved when staying here which takes you across cobbles, deeps loose stones, and a steep ramp (at low tide), especially when loading and unloading belongings from the parking lot. Overall we very much enjoyed the peace & quiet and homeyness of the boat. There are few minor details that should be addresses and I mention them for constructive feedback purposed: the torch lite next to the fridge does not work (and light is needed there), the captain's chair covers need to be replaced, the fridge is missing two shelves (rather annoying), and the linens on the bed in the smallest room were clean but somewhat shabby. Also, hooks or towel bars in each of the upstairs rooms would be very helpful since space is so limited in the tiny bathroom. Lastly, I agree that the couch should be replaced.
This was a first for us, staying on a boat. For our group it was cheaper than 2 hotel rooms, plus we took groceries and made breakfast then cooked out on the grill each night. The boat was spacious and well equipped with everything in the kitchen, including coffee and cream/sugar, dish soap, shampoos and bathroom soaps. Beds were comfortable, layout was great for a family. Two bedrooms and a separate bath upstairs. The only drawback was you walk through both bedrooms and the bath upstairs to get to the deck, a little awkward when carrying a plate of food for the grill. Very little movement except for a stormy morning when we felt the increase in the current. Excellent location, well worth the money! We walked easily to the North end and then used a hop on hop off trolley, stop just a few blocks away. We have traveled with our kids to 46 of the 50 states, stayed in everything from a teepee to now a houseboat, our experienced crew, from 9 year olds to grandparents give this 5 stars!
We stayed at this boat with 4 kids and three adults for a wet, cold weekend April! It was great! We ended up staying in the boat more than we would have because of the weather and enjoyed the space. We did have one senior woman with us who had a bit of a hard time with the boarding steps (the boat moved a bit away from the dock so it was a long step to get onto the boat). This is a great location... easy walking distance to the T, the Freedom Trail and a long walk to Boston Common. We got some food staples at a nice local shop called the Golden Goose... but recommend you bring most of the groceries you need from your "discount" grocery. We drove in and parked in the Lewis Wharf Parking Lot (very close). As I said, there WILL be walking on cobbles, gravel and (wet) decking to and from this boat so def not suited for people with mobility devices.
The houseboat was charming and cozy with good showers. Only recommendation: the sofa could probably use an update. Thanks for a great stay!
Choosing to stay on a houseboat in early April in Boston was probably not the greatest decision as the weather was absolutely terrible. We arrived Friday afternoon in wet slushy snow and basically had some type of cold precipitation (rain, sleet, snow, you name it... for the next 48 hours.) So the top deck was wasted on us. That being said... we were 8 old college friends who were gathering for our annual fantasy baseball draft and we had an absolute blast! The boat had plenty of space for everyone to sleep comfortably and the location was terrific. Despite the weather we were able walk for supplies and there were plenty of restaurants and bars close by in the neighborhood. The fridge is full-size and held as much beer and snacks as we needed. The close quarters turned out to be one of the best parts of the trip. We're usually spread out in regular hotel rooms. Staying all together and bunking in against the weather had the feel of a cozy cabin (but on the water.) The boat does rock, especially when it is windy, which it was most of the weekend, but it didn't bother me at all. Once you get used to it you don't really notice it. I would definitely stay again when the weather is nicer. My kids would love the novelty of it! Recommended. Just remember, it's a houseboat. The amenities are what they are. You'll have to spread out showers if you want hot water and good pressure. The kitchen is fine for heating stuff up or making breakfast but tight on prep space for anything more ambitious. The WiFi was very good considering we had 10 people all using laptops or tablets. The management company was tremendous and extremely helpful. They were around all weekend shoveling and salting so the dock was safe. Boat is well stocked with the basics (small kitchen appliances, utensils and plates, plenty of towels and extra blankets and pillows.) In the end, it was a much better deal than a hotel, cost-wise, especially for the North End of Boston. And damn fun!
Despite a few hiccups related to being the first renters of the season, Captain Jimmy went out of his way to look after us
We thought this would be a great change from the standard apartment or condo, and it was. Boat is neat and tidy, the ladder upstairs is not for anyone with stability issues, but was fine for us, and the outdoor seating was relaxing as well. Had a goose who hung around each morning waiting for cheerio's, which we know is not part of their natural diet, but we were on vacation! Great support while we were there, even when we left something behind ( sorry!) it arrived fedex the next day. Lot of fun we would do it again for certain : )
