Amazing location - just a 5 minute walk to the North End or Quincy Market. Quality of the boat was better than we expected. Spotlessly clean, extra towels and pillows and high quality bed linens. Boat is actually at the end of the dock so has an uninterrupted view of the harbor. Our son loved the sleeping cubbies! Only suggestion is some kind of umbrella or bimini for the deck as there is no shade and as it was a 90 degree weekend, we had to wait until nightfall to sit up top.
Wonderful accommodation for our family - Very clean, and an easy walk to everything we wanted to do in the city. I will definitely be back to this hidden gem.
This was the most unique, family-friendly rental experience we have ever had traveling to Boston. It was the kickoff weekend to our summer vacation and my parents' anniversary. The houseboat had everything we needed (including comfy beds, fluffy towels, extra pillows, hair dryer, nightlight) and plenty of space for all of us. The location was incomparable: in close walking distance of restaurants, Quincy Market, North End, the Aquarium, a playground, the Rose Kennedy Rose Garden. And truly, there is absolutely no comparison to waking up and having coffee at sunrise on the roofdeck. David was available to help out with getting us settled in, and when the cleaning crew found my iPad after we left, he was right on top of it. I cannot say enough good things about this property; we already cannot wait to come back.
The photos don't do this houseboat justice! When my friend booked it for our girls trip I wasn't so keen on the idea of staying on a houseboat but was pleasantly surprised by the White Elephant.
The outside of the boat looks kind of like a floating box but the character inside makes up for it. Once inside you forget you're even on the water. It's very spacious and our entire group of 8 had plenty of room to spread out.
We spent most of our time hanging on the roof deck which had a great view of Boston Harbor.
The only thing I would suggest others to note is that the steps to the second floor are a bit steep. It might be hard for someone that has difficulty climbing stairs to get to the second floor bedrooms and roof deck.
Other than that it was a fantastic rental and I'd highly recommend it to anyone!
We came with a large group for the Boston Marathon. 8 of us stayed on the white elephant and 6 more stayed on other sleep afloat boats. We had a fantastic time aboard the white elephant. It is incredibly spacious and comfortable. We often used our boat as the meeting place and it fit us all. We hung around the boat quite a bit since half of us were running and needed to relax and it was perfect. We cooked many of our meals at home. The kitchen is well-stocked, has a large refrigerator and the grill worked well. The deck is amazing. You can relax but still be a part of the city. The location is close to everything. We walked to the north end to eat and sample the pastry shops. It was very clean. JJ was extremely helpful getting us settled. We look forward to our next trip and will definitely stay on the white elephant again!
My group of 5 stayed on the White Elephant for 5 nights and had a great stay. It was within walking distance of the Boston Common, grocery store, many shops and amazing restaurants. The boat was as expected, clean, great views and very spacious in comparison to a hotel room. We chose the boat because the cost was comparable to a hotel room and because it would allow our group to be together more versus each having a hotel room. The day we arrived J.J. gave us an orientation of the boat. Even though he was extremely busy as he had other guests arriving he answered all our questions relating to the city and things to do. While we had a minor issue with the hot water J.J. was right on it and had it repaired promptly. He and I talked and texted multiple times during our stay. He was always available for questions. He was a great asset to us!! I plan on returning to Boston for the 2017 marathon and the White Elephant will be at the top of my list for accommodations.
We had the pleasure of staying on the White Elephant for a week in Sept 2014. We were a group of 6 (3 couples). After looking at various accommodation options in the city, this proved to be far and away the best value option. The boat offers 3 bedrooms each with a double bed. One room also has a pair of inset berths that would be great for kids. The upstairs layout is a bit difficult. You have to pass through the first bedroom, into the upstairs bathroom, and through the second bedroom to reach the rear sun deck. This might cause some problems privacy-wise, but we made it work for us. The main stateroom is well equipped with everything you need and its a comfortable place to relax after a hard day's sightseeing. The boat's caretaker, John, is only a phone call away at any time. He was there to meet us and show us around on arrival, and his friendliness and enthusiasm is a credit to the company. Best of all, however, is the location. From Long Wharf, its only a short walk to all amenities including T stations, shops, restaurants and bars, etc. Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall is only 5 minutes by foot, Boston Common just over 10. Absolutely ideal for those who would rather not hire a car. If you're worried about stability, don't be. The boat does rock very gently, but we found this to be calming and enjoyable. We would have no hesitation in returning to the White Elephant or to any other Sleep Afloat boat docked at this location. And we would be more than happy to recommend this to friends and family!
