Sleeps 2/8 - 4 bedroom villa on San Giulio island, Lake Orta, Northern Italy. Villa Monziani is a 17th C Villa, one of the oldest houses on San Giulio Island, lakeside, at water level, with full view of the lake, On the ground floor there is the garden, which stretches the length of the house (1/3 in the shade of the bower and 2/3 in the sun), the kitchen and a small lounge, which both open onto the garden, and a bathroom. The boathouse is adjacent to the garden. On the first floor there is a very large lounge with a fireplace and a master bedroom. The balcony on the first floor runs the length of the house and an outdoor stone staircase leads to the garden below. On the mezzanine there is the 2nd bedroom with twin beds and an en-suite bathroom. On the second floor there is the 3rd bedroom with en-suite bathroom and a small lounge area. Also on the second floor there is the 4th bedroom, a studio with a divan bed and a spectacular view of the lake. The house has been completely refurbished and modernised bearing in mind its past history, respecting its original plan. The ceilings are all original and designer furniture and illumination enhances the traditional settings, giving a sense of discrete luxury and homeliness. The garden is manicured and from the garden wall you can dive into the water, whose cleanliness is certified, or enter walking through the boat house.
A very magical atmosphere surrounds this island. The green hills of the pre-alpine lake and the small villages dotted on its shore give a feeling of tranquility. Orta's very attractive 18th century houses, make a colourful backdrop to its square, which is like a parlour with cafés, benches under shady trees, arches hiding shops and the full view of the fascinating island of San Giulio. A stunning view of the lake, of the town of Pella and of the Madonna del Sasso Church can be had from the Sacro Monte Franciscan Church above Orta. It is fascinating to stroll in Orta's narrow, cobbled streets and admire the Baroque houses that line them.To reach the island (a mere 400m) guests can use our boat, with or without engine, or the public taxi boats. They can park in our garage on the mainland. We meet our guests in Orta, show them the location of the garage, take them across to the island in our boat, show them the house, answer their questions and leave. We return the day of their departure.
A small apartment on the top floor belongs to my cousins. They are completely independent. They use the back entrance to the house and the central staircase to get to their flat. As for us, the house is their second home, so they might be or might not be there. They are very nice people to get on with and do not intrude.
Villa Monziani is owned by Ludovica Barrow, a retired translator. The house was once owned by Ludovica's great-great grandfather and is one of the oldest on the island. The villa has been completely refurbished and modernised, respecting its antique character. We care and cherish it and hope our guests will enjoy it and appreciate its uniqueness.
owner/property manager purchased this villa in 1639
A unique location, voted one of the 100 most characteristic in Italy.
I strongly suggest this house from 17th century facing Orta Lake. The house is spacious, confortable and very unique. It has a fireplace perfect for the cooler months, a fully equipped kitchen and a living area overlookibng the private garden and the beautìful lake. The owners are nice too.
A place to recommend absolutely!
I stayed at the Barrow home last spring with my boyfriend. We live a rather stressful life between two chaotic cities and this house was just what we needed. It was the perfect setting for swimming, boating, reading books, painting in the garden, taking pictures, eating the best food and drinking the finest wine, without being bothered by noisy tourist or hotel guests. Relaxing, thats the best word to describe this home.
There is a market in Orta every Wednesday. An English poetry festival takes place in Orta in September and a festival of classical music in June and September on the island at Villa Tallone. Fireworks in August are famous in Omegna, at the northern end of the lake. North West Italy is renown as the lake region, apart from Lake Orta there is also Lake Maggiore with its 3 beautiful islands, Lake Varese, Lake Lugano, Lake Como and Lake Garda. The arch of the pre-Alps and the massif of Monte Rosa are the backstage of this region.
Short excursions around Orta:
Walk to the Sacro Monte for a good view of the lake. Start from the square, walk up via Motta to the Church, turn right and follow the path that winds to the top of the hill. There is a restaurant/bar up there. There is also a viable road that accesses the splendid location.
Walk the circular path that skirts the peninsula alongside the lake. Start from the Square and walk left through the main street of Orta skirting the lake along a very picturesque walkway. The path leads you back to the main road and leaving Hotel Villa Crespi on the left you can descend again back to the main square.
Drive to the to the Church Madonna del Sasso via Gozzano and Alzo for a different view of the lake. Return to Alzo, turn left and continue to visit Quarna Sotto and then drive to Omega and back to Orta, basically circling the lake.
Drive to the Mottarone mountain (4,891) ft. on a clear day. Extensive view over lakes Maggiore, Varese, Orta , the Alps and Monte Rosa.
One day excursions:
Drive via Omegna to Stresa and visit the 3 islands. Drive North to Verbania, Cannero e Cannobbio and return home via Omegna.
In Stresa you an get the lift to Mottarone and back.
Drive to Como and after having visited its centre, drive along the left shore of the Lake to Cadenabbia and take the boat to Bellagio. Cross back to Cadenabbia and return to Orta.
Drive to Omegna, Gravellona Toce, Ornavasso, Piedimulera. Macugnaga e Pecetto. Walk around, it's beautiful, Take either lift to the base of the Glacier of Monte Rosa or to the opposite Monte Moro and walk to Rifugio Oberto where there is a further away but larger view of the glacier in its magnificence.
Two books in English at the house on the island which will be of great help. We will talk about the excursions, the shopping and so on when we meet you.

We meet guests at Orta in the main piazza*, unload baggage by the docks and then park your car in the garage, then take them and their luggage across to the island in our boat, show them the house and leave. *Accessing the main piazza requires a special permit and can be accessed only on the day of guests arrival and departure. For the permit we require car make, model & licence plate - hired cars will have details taken on arrival. Guests must arrive between 3pm and 7pm, this is because in case of bad weather the taxi boats stop running after 7pm. This has never been necessary, but guarantees guest access to the island in the eventuality.
We return the day of their departure and meet them in the piazza to say good bye and receive garage badge & key (+eventual extra parking permit). Guests kindly depart by 11am. Earlier departures have to be coordinated and drop off point in the piazza arranged according to the time required.
