Welcome to our home away from home! The Owl's Nest, formally The General Sheridan cottage is only 12 feet from shore on the all day sunny side and widest portion of upper Mousam Lake in Shapleigh, Maine. This cottage is one of the original Meader GAR Camps and is over 100 years old. You will enjoy this vintage 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom cottage with amazing wraparound porch to catch the daily sunsets or watch a storm come in from across the lake. You will enjoy this beautiful antique cottage (if walls could talk) and the history of this place while enjoying the updated comforts of home. Everything you need and nothing you don't...just the perfect spot to relax this summer or fall.
As you arrive and park, up to 3 parking spaces are available you can unload on the flat entry to the 2 sided wrap around porch. Entering through the glass sliding door you'll see a nicely laid out 1st floor which includes the living room with sleeper sofa, dining area, fully equipped kitchen and new bathroom with shower. Upstairs the 2nd floor has 3 small bedrooms 1 with a double bed, 2 with twin bunk beds and all three have a dresser and hook for your to put your belongings. This set up sleeps 6 comfortably and possibly eight with the pull out sofa downstairs. However, it is a small cottage and 8 people will not be as comfortable as 6. We do not allow pets at this time. Any questions, want more pictures, just ask.
We are installing a new dock this season that you will be able to sit on, fish off of, swim off of, etc. There are 2 kayaks, a canoe and floats for your enjoyment. The cottage is a great place to go for walks on the camp roads, ride your bike, go swimming, relax in the hammock and go on day trips to the many locations we are conveniently located to. We are only 30-35 minutes to southern Maine beaches, an hour to North Conway, NH and the mountains, outlets, an hour to Portland, Maine's Old Port, and countless restaurants, shopping, amusements.
I grew up enjoying my summer weekends on Mousam Lake at my grandparent's cottage across the lake. When I introduced my husband to Mousam Lake his was instantly smitten and we always dreamed we would one day have a place of our own on the peaceful lake. Last year that dream finally became a reality when we purchased this cottage. It is our home away from home and when we spend time there we find that the food always tastes better, the air is fresher and we sleep better than we ever seem to do at home. We love going to simply relax and watch the sunsets, sit on the wrap around porch at night and listen to the call of the loons, kayak all over the lake during the day or take a day trip to all of the amazing places Maine has to offer.
Joi Prud'homme purchased this cottage in 2014
There was no other place for us. When we saw this cottage we knew it was "the one!" It has everything you need and nothing you don't to achieve a truly peaceful time.
Because this is one of the oldest cottages on the lake it literally sits above the water on the all day sunny side of the lake. You get the most amazing sunsets to watch and when a storm comes through it is like watching it from a tree house! The location feels secluded and away from it all but in reality you can get to the coast, Portland, great restaurants and grocery stores as well as the white mountains of NH in no time at all.
We loved our stay there. It was so relaxing and comfortable. We will have this one earmarked for another vacation for sure!
Relaxing, rustic cottage tucked away on Mousam Lake. Loved the front porch overlooking the lake--does feel like an Owls Nest. If you're looking for a secluded refuge to relax, take a canoe ride and breathe some fresh air this is the place. We also took a day trip to Kennebunkport which is only 45 minutes way. Would definitely recommend. We were a family of 5.
My wife and I REALLY enjoyed our stay on beautiful Mousam Lake. The cottage was an intimate setting and the availability of kayaks and canoe's made it even better. Sitting on the wrap around porch, watching the amazing Maine sunsets and enjoying a glass of wine was one of our favorite things to do. Joi - thanks for making this a memorable vacation. We WILL come back.
Located only 1 hour and 45 minutes from Boston, 35 minutes from Southern Maine Beaches and 45 minutes from the White Mountains of NH, this quaint, vintage cottage is the perfect location for your Maine vacation. There is sandy bottom clear water swimming off your own private dock as well as canoeing, kayaking, fishing (small and big mouth bass, stocked salmon, trout), water skiing and tubing. The cottage is nestled off the main roads so walking and biking on the camp roads are a must and of course catching that gorgeous daily sunset right on the large wrap around porch. Day trips can include going to Maine's beaches, berry picking, antiquing, hiking or shopping in nearby NH's White Mountains.
The cottage is situated 12 feet from the shore on the all day sunny side and widest portion of upper Mousam Lake. The cottage sleeps 6 comfortably and possibly 8. There is parking for 3 cars at the cottage. Once you arrive you can easily unload your belongings onto the flat 2 sided wrap around porch towards the front sunny side of the cottage. Entering through the sliding glass door you'll discover a nicely laid out first floor which includes the living room, dining area, fully equipped kitchen and bathroom with shower. Continuing up the stairs to the 2nd floor you will find the sleeping quarters which are 3 small bedrooms, each with a chest of drawers and hooks on the walls to store your belongings. The master has a full size bed and the other two rooms each have a pair of bunk beds. There is also a comfy pull out sofa on the 1st floor. While the cottage could sleep 8, it is small and for your enjoyment we would recommend not going over 6 adults due to space issues. On the wrap around porch you will find a gas grill, plenty of rockers and seating to enjoy all the lake has to offer. Pets are not allowed generally speaking but we do have our own labs that come to the cottage on occasion. We can discuss the option of bringing your dog along for an additional, non-refundable deposit. There are kayaks and a canoe and plenty of floats to enjoy the lake!
