About the property

Villa in Kyoto, 2 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, sleeps 4

Thank you for looking at our spacious (120m2), bright, tranquil, elegant Kominka, a traditional Japanese folk house.Located in one of the most culturally significant parts of Kyoto, we trust our house will be the perfect haven for your vacation!

Boasting stunning views on the surroundings hills and valleys, our house, originally built in the 30s, was recently completely renovated and beautifully appointed by acclaimed architect Norito Nakahara, designer of the Claska hotel in Tokyo, the Kanra hotel and Anteroom in Kyoto among many others.

The ground floor offers a luminous, spacious open-space that leads from the entrance, through the modern kitchen to the traditional Japanese tatami room, allowing you to enjoy the view on the small private Japanese garden (tsubo-niwa) throughout the area.

The bathroom area which we tried to design with taste also overlooks the garden and completes the layout.

On the 2nd floor a peaceful sleep, lulled by the sound of a small stream running in front of the house, in one of the two Japanese tatami rooms should rejuvenate you after a busy day of sightseeing.

One room provides traditional Japanese beddings (futons), while the other a Western style double bed.

We also have an office area with a desk adjacent to one of the bedrooms.

Finally by using the vast dressing and storage area you should limit the clutter in the rest of the house.

Quick description of the layout:

1st floor: Kitchen, Living Room, Japanese Living Room, Bathroom, and Toilet, Japanese Garden.

2nd floor: Two Japanese Bedrooms with Japanese bedding (Futon) and a double bed.

Office area with a desk.

3rd Floor: Storage area and play room (sometime locked for safety reasons)

The house comes fully furnished with free internet Wifi, TV and DVD player, a gas-powered kitchen stove, microwave/traditional oven, refrigerator, freezer, dish washer, washer/dryer, shower/bath tub, hair dryer.

In the eastern part of Kyoto, in the protected and residential Okazaki district, a very short walk from the temple of Eikando, famous for its autumn colors and within a stones throw away from the Philosophers Path and the splendid Nanzen-Ji Temple complex, the house is located in one of the most compelling areas of Kyoto.

Running below the mount Daimonji, which at the culmination of the O-Bon festival is lit by a giant bonfire, the Philosopher's Path is often considered Kyotos best promenade. It links the Silver Pavilion Palace with the Nanzenji temple complex through a long and winding path that follows a canal bordered by cherry trees, charming cafs, quaint craft shops and typical restaurants. Visitors flock during the Cherry season and the fall to enjoy Japans most eagerly awaited events. The little known yet marvelous temple of Honen-in where famous writer Tanizaki Junichiro rests is also well worth a visit.

Within reach, we have the Fresco supermarket, very convenient for those wanting to dine home and the Yamada bakery popular with locals.

We will also be happy to recommend local restaurants always popular with travelers offering delicious lunch sets.

Numerous bus lines are very near, making all tourist areas easily accessible.

We also have a taxi station just by the house that operates during the day. Taxis are quite cheap for short rides, especially when compared to bus rides for a group of 4.

Please note that at night guests might have to walk slightly further to the Shirakawa road to catch a taxi.

We can also arrange bike rentals services, another popular way of sightseeing especially in our neighborhood.

The house might present some hazards for little ones if left unsupervised as there is a staircase (the loft area might be closed for this reason)

Please also note that like most parts of Kyoto, things can close early in our neighborhood, especially in winter.

In Japan we tend to eat dinner very early so you might find that shopping arcades, markets, popular restaurants do not operate for business after 19:00.

Please plan accordingly or head for the Kawaramachi area (easily and cheaply accessible by taxi from the house) that stays open later.

The house is available for rental for one party only. MAX 4 people.

For the comfort of the next guests, end-of-stay professional cleaning service is required and will be charged an additional 5,000 yen.

Please note : we apply an ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKING policy in and around the premises of the house for security reasons.

Excellent accommodations in tranquil neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I loved staying here for two weeks. Having been to Kyoto before, we found this to be an ideal location in one of our favorite parts of the city. This is a lovely house for 2 people - or perhaps a couple with one or 2 (well-behaved) children. It was immaculate, beautifully appointed in terms of amenities, and very comfortable. Of particular note as well was the kindness of the owner and his business partner; they couldn't have been more responsive and helpful. I would definitely recommend the house to an experienced Kyoto visitor who wants to stay in a quiet, traditional neighborhood, and my friend and I plan to return as well.

Tranquil, spacious, pristine, simple. Just what you see in the photographs. The location is superb - easy walk to marvelous temples; close transportation...a cab stand right nearby...and out of the hubbub of the central city. Perfect for two people, or two couples who are good friends. One bedroom has a large comfortable bed; the other (the one I was in) had a marvelous futon. We loved the shoji. The kitchen is well equipped and the Japanese bathroom, with deep tub, a great pleasure. Christian and Daniel couldn't have been more gracious and helpful in every way. This was our second trip to Kyoto...and we will avidly return to the Nanzenji house! (For first-timers to Kyoto, we strongly recommend staying in a ryokan -- or hotel w concierge -- to navigate the city, make restaurant reservations, etc.)
