The gardener's cottage was converted into this little house and has retained its character and charm with its wooden beam ceiling. Hidden in the two acre garden, with a swimming pool, of an old, private Villa in the historic city centre it is well equipped and consists of a lounge and dining area for 2 people, a curtained-off bedroom with double/twin beds and a separate bathroom and shower. It has air-conditioning in the summer and is not available in the winter. The living room includes a little kitchen with fridge, micro-wave oven and small stove. There is an outdoor table and chairs for dining in the shade. The bathroom and kitchen are both fully equipped and there is also a separate utility room for all your laundry needs. There is private parking in the grounds, and the estate is securely fenced. The cottage is particularly suitable in summer when the garden becomes an extension of your living room. When you arrive: At the estate you come to the main gates. Press the button and they will open automatically. Go half way up the drive and on the left, behind the main Villa, you will see the cottage which has a small path leading up to its door. Fresh flowers, a bottle of Chianti with a corkscrew and two glasses will be waiting for you for...a good start. You will also find a book giving useful instructions and information, recommending shops, restaurants, and transport. If you need any further help, information or advice please don't hesitate to ask at the Villa where you will be welcomed and where they speak English. They will show you where the separate laundry facilities are with washing machines, driers and clothes lines. On your last morning you can arrange to leave your luggage in the Villa should you wish to spend more time exploring the city or do some last-minute shopping. Arrival time is after 13:30 p.m. and departure by 10:30 a.m.

Five minutes walk .....: away you have all the necessary food shops and one of the best, typical Tuscan restaurants in Florence, 'Ruggero,' which is a well-kept Florentine secret. A 10 minute walk takes you to the Belvedere Fort and from there to all the best sites, via the Ponte Vecchio. You can also catch a bus from either end of the street and this will take you directly across the city and on to Fiesole, a charming little Roman hill town much favoured by 19th century English tourists. Or take a 6 minute bus trip to 'Bellosguardo' where Elizabeth Barrett Browning had her villa and gaze at the whole of Florence spread out below you. The seaside, with miles of sandy beaches, is about an hour away, and a day trip is easily possible by train from Florence to Venice or Rome. Be Florentine and buy your train, bus, museum and theatre tickets from travel agencies in the city centre; it saves a lot of time and hassle.

Don't forget that food shops in Italy....: Open early at 08:00 in the morning and then shut from 13:00 until between 4 and 5 in the afternoon. They shut at about 20:00. However, there is a supermarket which is open all day. All shops are closed on Sundays, except for cake and ice-cream shops which are only open in the morning. Restaurants serve lunch from 12:00 midday to about 14:00 but not much later (siesta time...), and dinner at night usually between 20:00 and 22:00. Cafes and pizzerias stay open later.

This is a private property which our visitors appreciate. We have enjoyed having them to stay for over 10 years. We are not a company or an agency. You will find in the guest book appreciative comments about their holidays and details of their experiences and advice. To quote from a 'thank-you' letter '...your garden Studio in Florence was the most enjoyable place we have rented in Europe and the best equipped...' (A.K.K., Moss Beach, California.) Over the years we have had many happy honeymooners!

'We enjoyed our stay enormously, as usual - it really is the only place to stay in Florence.' SD, Polstead, Suffolk, UK.
'The setting was just out of this world. A real heaven...We were so impressed with the accommodation and location that we are already planning a return visit for next year...I have no hesitation in recommending the accommodation to anyone.' S Stevens, Fife, Scotland
A very small villa, simply equipped (e.g. 2 ring freestanding hob and microwave only) and fairly basic, but just enough for 2 people. The location is ideal for visiting Florence and has all you need a walk away. The quiet location is very nice and the pool is a good addition. Or problem was the mosquitos which made relaxing outside very difficult and precautions were needed all the time, inside or out.
The location couldn't really be any better. Considering that you have a pool, it is located very near to the centre. We walked into town every day and it took about 20-25 minutes into the centre.
The accommodation is clean but rustically basic, but it had all the facilities to cook simple meals and eat them in the surrounding gardens.
The mosquitos are absolutely vicious so if you come bring plenty of repellent!
The pool is a good size for dipping into with a fair bit of shade and it got sun until 7pm.
Only downside was that it wasn't clear who would be meeting us when we arrived, as we didn't have a mobile number for the gardener (who let us in), and also paying the vendor was a bit confusing as they weren't there most of the week. But this is a minor downside.
I think this property is being undersold on the website - the visitors book is packed with rave reviews and helpful bits of advice on buses and local places to shop and eat. The cottage is tucked away in the huge gardens away from any noise or bustle of the city - you would think you are in the countryside it is so peaceful. It's not luxurious or modern (so go to a modern hotel if you want that) - but cosy, tranquil and romantic.
The owners are really helpful but leave you to your own devices once they have shown you round, and you can come and go as you please and use the pool and walk in the huge gardens whenever you like. It has everything you need to make simple meals (fridge, microwave, 2hot plates for pans, crockery) there is a little outside table to eat overlooking the gardens. There's a shower and twin beds, italian tv and a tape player, even some magazines.
My only warning is about the mosquitos in summer which are probably prevalent due to the gardens and pool, although there are sprays and repellents provided in the cottage too. There are a few dogs on the property and I'm not a big fan of dogs but they were really well behaved and I didn't worry about them at all.
You could walk into town but if you are sightseeing all day it is probably too much - the bus stop is 5 mins away and they are quite reliable, every 20mins or so, and go to town and the main bus and train station in about 10mins - perfect for trips beyond Florence. In the evenings we often got a taxi back from town which was about 14 euros, although there is a night bus too. Buses worked for us well as my husband had a leg injury so couldn't do much walking - he was fine but I think it could be awkward for anyone with a wheelchair as you need to go up steps and the bedroom/bathroom wouldn't be big enough.
I wouldn't hestitate to book this cottage again if I ever return to Florence.
(If you are looking at the other property (studio) I didn't see inside but it seemed bigger - but less 'tucked away' as it's right on the driveway and although you have the same access to the gardens and pool, you probably feel less like they are your own.)
We had a lovely time in Florence. It was our third visit to the city and the first time that we had chosen to stay in a small property away from the crowds. It worked wonderfully! We explored travel by bus which is very efficient and we used the 11, 12 and 13 for different routes into town. We even ventured to Fiesole on the number 7 bus where we enjoyed a visit to the archeological sites as well as a lovely walk around the town and lunch on a terrace overlooking Florence - a wonderful day.
The cottage was certainly adequate for 2 and the spacious setting gave us the opportunity to relax after time in Florence. Peter is a very keen swimmer, the main reason for chosing Il villino, but the water was a little cold for me in October. However, the weather was fantastic (better than we expected in October), warm and sunny every day.
Il Villino will certainly be placed on our list of places to use again.
Only a 20 minute drive from Florence airport and 10 minute taxi ride from the station, this small cottage is in a quiet, exclusive area, between the Boboli Gardens and the Imperial Palace, and only 10 minutes walk from the historic centre. It is within 3 minutes walk from the gates of the property to a bus stop, 5 minutes from food shops, and 10 minutes drive from the Florence Certosa exit on the Autostrada A1. The property has been in the family of my cousins since the early nineteenth century. The estate is in a conservation area, protected from any further building, and therefore tranquil and secluded without being remote. You can easily explore Florence with its narrow streets, palaces, museums and churches and its wonderful shops of international fashion designers. Then come home to rest and enjoy the calm of the garden and the pool.
