About Tessa - Property Manager/Owner

We are a British / Australian couple with two young children. We enjoy all the Bahamas has to offer including snorkeling, surfing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, sailing, beach exploring and an all round outdoor lifestyle!

Tessa - Property Manager/Owner purchased this house in 2009

Why Tessa - Property Manager/Owner chose Eleuthera

We were so lucky to come across Eleuthera. It is really a very special place and many people that visit end up coming back year after year or buying a vacation house. You can chose to live a simple, easy lifestyle or a glamorous and extravagant lifestyle, it is a place to unwind and enjoy nature with few of the worries found with other places around the world. We love all kinds of water sports and Eleuthera is the perfect venue for this. The peaceful, relaxing and un-spoilt atmosphere of Eleuthera is complemented with the hustle and bustle of ritzy Harbour Island, only a short drive and water taxi trip from our villa.

What makes this house unique

As soon as we see the view from the house, we feel relaxed and at home. We can walk for 20 seconds and be in the clear, warm water. I love the rustic island feel with an old (never used!) fireplace and stone walls. The light, openness of the house captures the feeling of a real island cottage.

Escape To Eleuthera (Meaning 'Freedom') In The Bahamas
average rating of 4.1 based on 10 reviews

The house was unkept and disappointing, the view was pretty, but the beach was steep & rocky.

The house had very small ants, (sugar ants) in the kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Some outlets in the house didn't work, with a large extension cord used in the master bedroom to to use nightstand lights. Passwords for the internet & Apple TV were not readily available. Light bulbs were randomly missing throughout. The towels were old with no wash clothes available at all. We tried to use the oven, but it never would heat up. The remote for the TV was missing. Owners seemed nice, but this house needs much more care.

Owner's Response: We are sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay, the local saying goes - "Eleuthera is not for everyone". You complained by phone that the "curtains were too see through" (they are new and linen) and there was rust on the fridge (the house is about 50 ft from the salt water) and unfortunately the tiny sugar ants are common in the tropics so am not sure that the tropics are the right place for you... The house is advertised as "rustic beach house", if you were wanting a beach house that satisfied your exhaustive requirements, you may have to add a zero to your nightly budget!

Bahama's breeze

This piece of property is at a spectacular location in North Eleuthera in a nice, quiet neighborhood. The view is plain fantastic from the patio during the sunrise, through out the day, and the evening, though one should take a very short stroll down to the beach to see the sunset. We enjoyed the sunset on the beach every evening. At night one can hear rustling of palm trees and a distant Caribbean surf. The cottage is located within a convenient distance from the North Eleuthera airport (MELH). The island is quite long (90 miles or so), but the drive from this major a irport is hardly 25 minutes. The location is very convenient to explore both Central and North Eleuthera, as well as the Harbour Island (the latter one is a must). A rental car is a must, too. Overall, this is an almost ideal dwelling to have a relaxing time on this beautiful, unspoiled island at an affordable price. We will be back.

I didnt want it to end!

This property is absolutely perfect for an adventurous vacation in Eleuthera! The view from the front porch is unbeatable. It is a short walk down to a lovely cove that is great for swimming. My boyfriend and I took this trip along with some friends to celebrate his 40th birthday. What a perfect way to start a new decade! Tessa was wonderful and helpful and the house was clean and had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. This was my second trip to Eluethera and I will say that this is not the type of vacation for those used to all of the amenities of an all inclusive resort. This Island is off the beaten path, a little rough around the edges, but the natural beauty is incomparable. I would say bring whatever food you can as it t can be a little hard to find and expensive. Come with an open mind! Explore! Eleuthera will get in your soul if you let it.

Bugs, In Need of Repair, Big Disappointment

  • 1 of 5

We came to Eleuthera for a two week stay in March 2016. The first week we stayed at a VRBO in Palmetto Point Eleuthera, had a great week and then moved to this property to explore the the north part of the island. What a disappointment! When we got to the property, the cleaning person was there, so we left and came back, she had finished and said she would drop off clean towels the next day. We entered the property and the first thing we saw was that the master bedroom does not have a king bed as described. The mattress was stained, and the sheets and towels in the home are very old and should be replaced. A further look around revealed that ants were crawling on counter tops and walls in the kitchen and bathrooms and larger bugs on the floors in the bedrooms and living areas. The bugs could come and go because the doors and windows, did not close ( or lock) properly. The window cranks were falling off the windows, the sliding door locks were corroded. We had to put duck tape on the the sliding door screen as there was a one foot rip across the bottom of the screen. Other windows in the home had tape along the window as it met the wall, this appeared to cover gaps, possibly to keep the bugs out. The side door to the house was wide open with the key in it when we arrived, which was a bummer, because small lizards are all around the property, not sure how many of those are in the house. There appears to be a mouse problem too, as there are sticky mouse traps under the bathroom sink. The owner called the morning after we arrived and we let them know we were seeing bugs and were not able to lock doors. They asked if we had seen any roaches! We let them know that we could not lock the doors and they let us know that they typically leave the property open, but that we could lock the sliding doors with the a piece of wood at the bottom of the door. As we did not feel safe sleeping at night and the bugs finally got the best of us, we left after 3 miserable nights, having to find other accommodations. We didn't have clean towels until the day we left. As we packed our car, a neighbor could tell we were leaving and said "couldn't take it anymore, huh?" We notified the owner the next day that we had left the home and locked it, (as best we could), leaving the key where they instructed us to (outside, in a designated spot). Communications broke down with the owner as they did not want us to write a bad review. RENTER, BEWARE!

Owner's Response: A libellous and extortive attempt to get a refund by the Traveler. Home Away should consider filtering this type of libellous, malicious and misrepresented review or otherwise alienate its client base who, we understand, are often subjected to this type of practice. The review mentions Lizards in the house, cockroaches and mice but none of these were actually observed. In any other medium rather than on-line this type of false and intentionally misleading review would result in legal action against the author for damages.

A great house at a great price!

  • 5 of 5

The house is located in a friendly neighborhood on the northern end of the island. The patio area is very breezy and comfortable, and offers a beautiful view of the Caribbean. The beach is just a short walk away from the house. The kitchen works well for cooking meals. Plenty of room for two couples to stay comfortably in the house. We liked how each bedroom and bathroom were in a separate “wing” of the house. Internet access works well. The owners are very friendly and helpful.

Honestly we loved everything about this house. Location was ideal, area beautiful with a constant view of the ocean. We had some inclement weather, which was fine as it made waves on the gentle cove, nice to hear at night. The house is not large, although fit all five of us perfectly. My kids loved the Apple TV. They got to watch constant movies. Nice to occupy those early hours before heading to the beach. Which every beach exceeded out expectations and we went to a many a beach. Pink sand gorgeous turquoise water! And we had the pick of calm and great waves as one side of the island is Caribbean and the other os the Atlantic. Absolute magic! We also love the natural calmness of the island too. Outstanding! Thank you Tessa you were a dream to work with.
