About Susan and Jim Smith
We live now in Raleigh, NC but grew up in Tennessee and love the Smokies, vacationing there many times throughout our lives. We love to travel, especially in the mountains, and wanted a place that we could meet our relatives from Nashville and where we could go with our children and grandchildren. We planned to retire to this area and bought this home ahead of time so that we and our families could enjoy it and build happy memories in this beautiful spot! We never tire of coming to the Smokies!
Susan and Jim Smith purchased this Chalet in 1996
Why Susan and Jim Smith chose Gatlinburg
We hoped to retire in the Smokies one day and thought it would be ideal if we could buy a vacation home here. That was 15 years ago, and we have truly enjoyed being able to come here to the King of the Mountain. We love the Cobbly Nob area because it overlooks the national park and is far enough away from the crowds and tourist attractions to feel like you're immersed in the mountains. We have continually upgraded, remodeled and refurnished this mountain house over the years from a pink and gray, Japanese modern style (for real) to the rustic, craftsman-like decor it now has. We continue to upgrade it (just finished totally remodeling 3 bathrooms which we stripped down to the studs) and try to make it a welcoming mountain retreat .
What makes this Chalet unique
King of the Mountain is 3 floors of spacious living with a lot of room for several families to spread out. We fell in love with this particular house originally because of the view. It is truly spectacular and inspirational --makes you truly appreciate God's creation! I have never seen as many stars in the sky as when we're there. We have seen black bears a few times and you can drive a couple of miles down the highway to the Greenbriar entrance to the national park and be in one of the most private places in the park -- a rushing mountain stream, lots of wildflowers, and just nature! We drive to the town of Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge every day or so for a variety of restaurants and activities, but we really enjoy retreating to our mountain house in Cobbly Nob.

Great view from inside and out with plenty of room for a large family or group.
Access to the house was very easy. We have stayed in Pittman Center on previous occasions and the drives to other homes in the past were very worrisome for my wife. The drive to this house was very easy and worry free. Plenty of parking. There are two driveways - on the main level easy 5 to six cars and parking on the lower level 3 cars easy. I liked that my own code would unlock the door so I did not have to worry about a key and I was able to go straight to the house and not worry about a management company. The house is three stories with outside access to each level. Plenty of room on the porch (2 BBQ and a smoker where on there during our visit). The views from inside and the porch were breathtaking. We could watch the snow following across the way on top of the mountain. It was fantastic. The kitchen was well stocked with cooking utensils including crockpots and silverware. We had 14 of us stay and some daytime visitors and never ran out of ice. The bed I stayed in was very comfortable and I did not hear anyone else complain about their bed. We come yearly and most everyone wants to stay back at this house again- it was sooooo perfect for our needs. Tip- To open the trash can outside one needs to push the doors while at the same time pulling the latch otherwise it will not unlock. We were there over Thanksgiving 2017 and made lots of memories that will not be forgotten. Thank you to the host for a very warm and inviting home.
We're glad you had a great stay at King of the Mountain! Thank you for the detailed, positive review. We hope you come again!
WE WOULD GO AGAIN.
TWENTY OF US WOMEN RELATIVES AND FRIENDS GO ON RETREAT EVERY YEAR AND THIS WAS BY FAR THE BEST EVER. WE REALLY ENJOYED THE PLACE BUT THE TWO SMALL TRASH RECEPTACLES OUT SIDE IN THE BEAR PROOF CAGE WAS NOT BIG ENOUGH TO HOLD TRASH FOR 20 WOMEN FOR THE 3 DAY STAY. ALSO, THERE WERE ONLY TWO PLASTIC TRASH BAGS IN THE KITCHEN TO USE SO WE USED OUR SHOPPING BAGS TO HOLD THE REST OF THE TRASH. ALTHOUGH I CALLED FOR TRASH PICK-UP I COULDN'T LEAVE A MESSAGE BECAUSE THEIR MAILBOX WAS FULL AND THE RECORDING TOLD ME TO HANG UP. WE FILLED UP THE BINS OUTSIDE AND I'M SORRY WE HAD TO LEAVE TRASH IN THE KITCHEN BUT WE COULDN'T LEAVE IT OUT SIDE FOR THE BEARS TO GET INTO. OUR FIRST DAY THERE WE SAW MAMA BEAR AND HER THREE CUBS WALKING ALL AROUND THE PLACE AND BETWEEN THE CARS AND WE WERE ALL EXCITED ABOUT THAT AND TOOK PICTURES AND VIDEOS AND PLACED ON OUR FACEBOOK. WE GOT JUST A GLIMPSE OF THEM ONE MORE TIME THRU THE TREES. EACH TIME WE WENT OUT SIDE TO OUR CARS WE SCOPED THE PLACE TO MAKE SURE WE DIDN'T SEE ANY BEARS WHILE ON LEVEL GROUND. THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH TOWELS OR WASH CLOTHES; IT'S A GOOD THING THAT MOST OF US TOOK OUR OWN. THERE WERE NO BLANKETS.
House was beautiful and clean!
Loved the House! Kitchen was fully equipped. Beds were all comfy! Very clean. Deck looks like it needs restrained. Only complaint is need more comfortable chairs outside to enjoy t hoses beautiful views. One of our friends saw 2 bears on a morning walk!
We are glad you had a great time. You are correct that the deck needs to be re-stained. We have been waiting for warmer weather, and it is being taken care of now. Thanks for the positive review!
Great with some minor complaints
My family and I really enjoyed our time at King of the Mountain. We were a group of 16 and there was plenty of room for all of us to spread out but still enjoy each other. With that said, our major issue with the cabin is that it sleeps up to 22, but yet only had one hot tub that could only comfortably fit 4 people, that was a bummer as many of us didn't get a chance to enjoy the hot tub at all although we had been looking forward to doing so. A couple other minor complaints were that we had to wash the majority of the dishes BEFORE use, due to them not being very clean and although the cabin is FULLY stocked with everything u need, we couldn't locate any dish towels and dishcloths. But like I said, we really enjoyed our stay, and the cabin was absolutely gorgeous!
We are glad you and your group had a good stay in our home. We strive to make it a home that is better than home. We are sincerely sorry about the dishes being dirty. As you know, we ask each guest to put their dishes through the dishwasher before they leave. This has worked well for us, but occasionally someone disappoints us by not washing dishes. The cleaning people should have caught that. I will make sure they are more aware in the future. Speaking of dishes, it is kind of a paradox that one of the things that "walks off" are the dish towels and dishcloths! Again the cleaning people should have caught this and replaced them. I'm also sorry about the hot tub. It is supposed to be a 6-8 person hot tub, and I would say from my experience 6 is all that fits comfortably. We felt that when the adults used the tub, they wanted it to be a little more intimate that having a large tub. When that tub needs to be replaced, we will look into getting one a size or so larger. Again thank you for your comments. I hope you come back again soon and stay with us.
Perfect for our large family get together!
Communication with the owner was excellent! Susan provides detailed directions and information and updates prior to our trip. The cabin is easy to access, with plenty of parking. The view is amazing! Property was clean, well maintained and the kitchen had everything we needed to prepare and feed our party of 12. Would definitely return to this property!
So glad you had a great trip! Thank you for leaving a positive review!
This was a great spot! You absolutely can't beat the views - we've been to Gatlinburg several years in a row and this is by far the best view - doesn't feel like you're smashed up against other cabins either. Everything was clean and exactly as pictured. Kitchen was well stocked and all the beds were very comfortable. Communication with the owners was great. Loved the tables for playing games. I will say that if you go in the Fall there are a LOT of ladybugs. We weren't particularly bothered by them because they're harmless and they obviously are spraying for bugs because ladybugs were the only ones we saw, but be aware if you go in the Fall you will see a lot of them inside and out.
Thank you for your review! I know what you mean about the ladybugs...the come in droves in the fall and somehow are able to permeate everywhere. It is a strange phenomenon, but they go away about as quickly as they come. We do have an exterminator come regularly. Glad you enjoyed your stay!
