We live now in Raleigh, NC but grew up in Tennessee and love the Smokies, vacationing there many times throughout our lives. We love to travel, especially in the mountains, and wanted a place that we could meet our relatives from Nashville and where we could go with our children and grandchildren. We planned to retire to this area and bought this home ahead of time so that we and our families could enjoy it and build happy memories in this beautiful spot! We never tire of coming to the Smokies!
Susan and Jim Smith purchased this chalet in 1996
We hoped to retire in the Smokies one day and thought it would be ideal if we could buy a vacation home here. That was 15 years ago, and we have truly enjoyed being able to come here to the King of the Mountain. We love the Cobbly Nob area because it overlooks the national park and is far enough away from the crowds and tourist attractions to feel like you're immersed in the mountains. We have continually upgraded, remodeled and refurnished this mountain house over the years from a pink and gray, Japanese modern style (for real) to the rustic, craftsman-like decor it now has We continue to upgrade it (just finished totally remodeling 3 bathrooms which we stripped down to the studs) and try to make it a welcoming mountain retreat
King of the Mountain is 3 floors of spacious living with a lot of room for several families to spread out. We fell in love with this particular house originally because of the view. It is truly spectacular and inspirational --makes you truly appreciate God's creation! I have never seen as many stars in the sky as when we're there. We have seen black bears a few times and you can drive a couple of miles down the highway to the Greenbriar entrance to the national park and be in one of the most private places in the park -- a rushing mountain stream, lots of wildflowers, and just nature! We drive to the town of Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge every day or so for a variety of restaurants and activities, but we really enjoy retreating to our mountain house in Cobbly Nob.
My entire family loved the cabin! The views are amazing and it is a short drive to downtown Gatlinburg (we enjoyed being away from the crowds of tourists!) The drive though the golf course and the geese walking near the creek was always a welcome sight coming and going off the mountain. I enjoyed listening to the birds calling and my grandson even saw a bear close to the cabin!
We stayed 7 night in June of 2016. We had 25 people (12 adults and 12 kids under the age of 10) and there was plenty of room for all of us. Some of the kids doubled on futons in the basement, but they are small so it worked well for us. Plenty of table space for all of us to sit down to eat at one time. Always had plenty of hot water, even with everyone showering and the laundry going. The kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, and cooking supplies. The hot tub was relaxing and the kids really enjoyed playing pool in the basement. The swimming pool was perfect, but a little bit of steep, winding roads to get there -- nothing to be afraid of, just be ready for it!
All in all, we had a great time and would definitely stay again if we ever went back to Gatlinburg. We really appreciate Susan and Jim sharing their home with us.
This property matches its reviews and pictures. My family of 12 celebrated my 70th birthday here in very comfortable and beautiful surroundings. Everyone had a spacious bedroom with a comfortable mattress. There is plenty of room for visiting together or spreading out in various groups. The kitchen is well equipped. Although the cabin is not entirely secluded, it feels that way as a full view of the mountains is the porch view and you have to look to see the neighbors. A mother bear brought her 3 cubs by each evening for our viewing as close as the front door! Although you have the feel of being secluded in the mountains, everything you forgot to bring or need is not far away. All of the appliances were updated and the air conditioning was more than adequate. My family all agreed that returning to this spot was a definite possibility.
We just concluded a two night weekend stay at this wonderful home. We had 10 adults and two kids celebrating an anniversary. When we arrived my wife and I walked thru the home to pick out bedrooms for our adult children and spouses. Every room is wonderfully decorated in rustic furniture. The rooms look just like the photos here on the owners web site. I had a couple of questions and called Susan right after we arrived. Her husband Jim called me back within 10 minutes. They were both great to work with.
Favorite things about the house ......
Great kitchen with everything you need and room for lots of people to gather at meal time
Loved the master suite upstairs with its own balcony and loft
The wrap around deck is huge with many chairs to sit out and enjoy the magnificent view.
Large flat screen TV's both up and down.....we played a lot of DVD's..
We all loved the weekend in this beautiful home. Several times our kids said "This is just perfect". The kids made a quick trip into Gatlinburg on Saturday but we spent most of the weekend gathering on deck and living room. If we do this again we will go back to this house. Thanks Susan and Jim
We spent an amazing weekend at the King of the Mountain. We hope to make this an annual event and we will be definitely renting from Jim and Susan. They were so easy to reach and very easy to work with. We had 21 people ages 3 months to 68 years young. Everyone had a bed to sleep in and was very comfortable. We loved all the space inside and outside as well. Thank you Jim and Susan for sharing your home away from home with my family. We had a great time and will return.
We had a wonderful time with family at your cabin/chalet! Our family ( 2 sisters and our families of 2 children each and their families- 10 adults, 2 children) spend the weekend before Christmas together in Pigeon Forge or Gatllinburg. We have family from Lexington, Ky to Charlotte, NC so the area makes it a convenient meeting place. The layout of the house was perfect for us. It was one of the nicest and most well equipped places that we have stayed. This was the only place that everyone said that they had the best time and wanted to return next year. It was far enough away from town, shopping, etc that everyone loved just spending time together. ( Shopping, etc was not that far away but we rather spend time together). There was plenty to do in the house- eating together, watching tv/movies, playing pool, hot tub at night, two living places for hanging out together. We all had a wonderful time and will definitely return. Thank you for sharing your vacation home.
The chalet was a short and fun twisty curvy drive up the mountain to a beautiful lookout point. (I imagine you'll want 4 wheel drive during the winter. We slipped on just a wet road in our CR-V, but it is a paved road.)
The chalet is nice and decently maintained. There were a few things not working properly, like the faucet to the kitchen sink, the door handle to the upper deck in the 3rd floor bedroom, a lock downstairs I think to a bedroom. But other than that it was clean and we were definitely safe.
We had 6 different couples and one single adult with 7 kids/babies and it was absolutely perfect for all of us! There are tons of things to do 30 minutes away or more, but having a place we could all gather together to eat and just hang out was absolutely fantastic. Also, there was enough parking for our 6 cars without playing musical cars every time someone wanted to leave, which is impressive in this area.
The only recommendation, besides the faucet and the upper bedroom fixes, we would have would be to put the hot tub on the deck so that you can enjoy the view while relaxing in the hot water.
We hope to come back in the future!
