This home is owned by the same family since being built in 1918. We have many years of memories of family reunions and celebrations. We invite you to share in the peace, tranquility and natural wonder that Slick Rock embodies. Charm and character still intact but updated for modern convenience and comfort. This is a well cherished home and an owner is available if necessary during your stay.
Janet Howell purchased this house in 1918
Large enough for family reunions, small enough for that intimate wedding, weekend get away and casual retreat.
Our three night fall family mountain trip was successful in good measure because of the beautiful house in which we all stayed. This historic house sits high up on the eastern rim of the top of White Oak Mt. and offers breathtaking views off to the north and east. The house shows its age (~100 years) in some ways, but everyone thought that it was charming and appointed with beautiful fixtures and wall hangings throughout. We filled every bed in the house 2 of the 3 nights and filled the well equipped kitchen every morning as the group cooked and chatted right up to the time to head out for each day's activities. We did have a problem with the igniter for the furnace, but once we realized that there was a problem the owner addressed it quickly and repairs were made in a timely manner.
Although there is plenty of development on the mountain, this property is very peaceful and secluded. The grandchildren had a great time playing in the woods and especially loved the tire swing. We put up the rope hammock, but it didn't get used much because of the blustery winds that accompanied the cold front that passed through over the weekend. There is nice sturdy outdoor furniture on the front terrace and at the overlook area perfect for enjoying the spectacular views. There are also 3 hiking trails on the property, but we were only able to explore 1 which led to a nice rock outcropping with a clear view of the mountains to the north.
One of the highlights of our weekend was Saturday night at the Tryon International Equestrian Center. This is an amazing new facility with lots of activities to entertain the kids, various food venues, and best of all the opportunity to enjoy show jumping at a world class level. There are interesting small towns such as Tryon and Saluda nearby, and beautiful Pearson's Falls where our whole group enjoyed the lovely short hike to this picturesque waterfall. There is an abundance of other outdoor activities within a reasonable distance.
The descriptive information provided by Home Away was accurate and helpful, and the photos provide a good picture of the property layout. There is no way however, to adequately describe the stunning views provided from this property. They must be seen to be believed. All of our group would agree that this is a great place to make family memories and would definitely recommend it to any group looking for a charming setting for a relaxing time in/near the beautiful North Carolina mountains.
It was great to return to this special place where we were married. Slick Rock is a special place nestled on the top of White Oak Mountain overlooking the Blue Ridge. The views are spectacular and go forever. It a great place to get away from it all. The house has so much character and has everything you need for a family reunion and getaway. Plenty of room. Highly recommended.
