Overview

About the property

Our charming garden cottage is located in the heart of Berkeley's historic McGee-Spaulding district. It is the perfect place to unwind as it is safe, quiet, and tranquil, yet only a few minutes by foot to downtown Berkeley and the UC Berkeley campus.

Known since the '70's as the 'Dragon's Eye' and more recently as the 'Green Dragon' this property has turn of the century charm with lots of interesting architectural details and Berkeley character.

A winsome one-bedroom, Prospero’s Cottage is situated in our backyard garden, sleeps 2-4 people, has a full kitchen, living room, full bath, 2 small decks, and lots of warmth. It is ideal for 1-2 adults or a couple with 1-2 kids. The bedroom has a queen size bed. There is a foldout couch in the living room that can fit 1 adult or 2 kids. The cottage has radiant heat under the floor, cable TV, wifi, and laundry facilities.

Depending on the time of year, there may be plums, figs, strawberries, raspberries, or other delights growing in the garden and waiting to be eaten. Oh and hummingbirds!

Perfectly situated in central Berkeley, we are a 6-7 minute walk to BART, downtown Berkeley, Trader Joe's, movies, BAM/PFA, and many multiple star restaurants Comal, Gather, Ippiku, Corso, to name a few.

Great location, great setting, great owner

Nothing but positives. If you're in Berkeley, you won't find a better property or more accommodating owner. We'll definitely be back.

Lovely Berkeley Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay here! We were in town for a wedding and were very nervous about our first time traveling cross-country with our 17mo old daughter, but Anne was so helpful and accommodating. Our daughter loved the garden and was obsessed with picking figs and raspberries. The cottage was conveniently located and we had a blast.

Homey, cheerful, and quaint, this little cottage is a gem.

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at the Goldfinch cottage in Berkeley. It's nestled behind the main house amid lush trees and flowers, and the cottage itself, although small, was just right for our needs. The weather was uncharacteristically warm while we were visiting, but the fan in the bedroom cooled the room, and we slept great. Although we didn't cook, the kitchen is equipped with everything necessary to do so. The location is perfect for walking to restaurants, grocery stores, and other city attractions, and Anne is friendly, warm, and accommodating. The cottage exceeded our expectations, and we will be back.

Sweet cottage in Berkeley

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the Goldfinch cottage during our short trip to Berkeley to tour the UC Berkeley campus! Our hosts were very welcoming and accommodating. We loved the beautiful gardens and great neighborhood -- close to downtown Berkeley and the UC campus.

Excellent Location and communication with Anne, the owner

  • 5 of 5

Had the owner, Anne not been so responsive to our needs I would have given the cottage a 4 star. The location is excellent and the cleanliness and comfort are great. However, she and I have discussed the sleeper sofa, which was not so comfortable. She was very responsive to my comments and is in the process of figuring out ways to make it work for future guests. Should I ever be back in the area, I will be renting this place again!

Very comfortable, peaceful, cozy and well-functioning.

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderfully comfortable, peaceful cottage. It is very quiet and spotlessly clean. The kitchen is well-equipped and easy to use. The bed was very comfortable. I felt at home right away. I never met Anne, but she left milk, coffee and the famous croissants in the cottage for me, and her generous, happy spirit was easy to feel on the property. It is a short walk to Trader Joe's. The neighborhood felt very safe and peaceful.
