I've lived most of my life in the U.S. but have also lived for a couple of months to up to two years in different countries: Germany, Spain, Australia, Colombia, Ecuador & Belize. Since 2011 I've been living a somewhat nomadic lifestyle while exploring, working & volunteering in new & old places -- it's a great way to keep learning!
I was lucky to meet Deb & Mark from Dallas, who own the Cartagena, Colombia, & Ambergris Caye, Belize, vacation rentals I'm listing. They asked me to help them out and I've fallen into doing something that I love -- helping people like you with their travels. Let me help you with your dream vacation!
We also partner with 'Pack for a Purpose', an organization that links travelers who'd like to help fulfill wish lists of non-profits in developing countries. We work with Fundación La Vecina, a community organization in Cartagena, and in Belize we partner with Ambergris Caye Elementary School (ACES) and the Saga Humane Society in San Pedro. We'd love to have your help!
My husband and I arrived on 4/9/16 to a two week stay to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. Everything was totally smooth in that Judy (one amazing lady, just love her) took care of all the arrangements including our flights on Tropic Air. We were picked up at the airport and taken to the condo. The condo was great, exactly as pictured on the VRBO site and had everything you could want or need. Location was perfect, away from the hustle and noise of the city but still just a short golf cart ride away. By the way, a golf cart is a must if you plan on exploring the island which you absolutely should. Chapin, the caretaker was super friendly and helpful. We did everything . . . and then some. Bone fishing with Abner Marin from Gofishbelize was the pinnacle of the trip for my husband who is an avid fisherman. If you want the best fishing experience of your life, go with Abby. He is also a super cool person to spend the day with. Reef fishing, snorkeling, trip to Lamanai (if you are a history buff at all don't miss this) & swimming with sharks. Ramon's was the best place to book all your trips they were fantastic. If you catch fresh fish, take it to Pineapples at Ramons and they will fix you the most fantastic meal for $10US per person and the view from their dining area is fabulous. OK, so now for more good stuff . . . the food. Oh my! If you know where to go you will get the most amazing food and can eat for about $15 a day if you are on a really tight budget. There are a couple of upscale restaurants that are really pricey, but you can get food just as good at other places for half the price. Must visit: Robin's chicken (absolutely the best jerked chicken and sides ever) $7.00 US per person. For ceviche - go to Caliente's HUGE servings of really super fresh ceviche for about $14.00 US, Neri's taco place where all the locals eat you can literally stuff yourself for less than $5US. Must go to the Truck Stop on the northern end of the island. Super cool place with three different food venues (Latin, Asian & home made ice cream). On Wednesday nights they have movie night outside under the stars (we saw Monty Python and the Holy Grail)Corn hole, horseshoes and firepit. And go to Mesa Cafe in town for coconut french toast, oh my. Deb Bennett the condo owner was great to work with and you will love Judy when she comes to see you. Could write pages and pages but this should at least give you some idea. Go, see, do and enjoy! Joni
2.5 miles from town...away from the crowds and craziness....but only a 10 minute cart ride from it if you want to be in the thick of the shops, restaurants, bars, and the day-to day activities of San Pedro. Everyone in town seems to be on a mission: going to work, selling vegetables, driving any type of vehicle that moves...but never to busy to say hi or give directions. Sunset Beach is quiet, clean and has everything you need (market, tours, and swimming) within a short walk. Owners/managers are most accommodating and will arrange transportation to the island, a taxi and a golf cart which makes everything easier after you've spent all day traveling. Tourist bars/restaurants are OK but not much different from U.S. Much more fun to hit the local neighborhood haunts, buy fish off the dock, and explore the back roads. Tour to Mayan Ruins was a highlight.
Ambergris Caye, “La Isla Bonita”, is a popular tourist destination. San Pedro is a quaint little town of about 13,000 residents that has retained its charm while handling the growing number of visitors. Sunset Beach Resort is located 2.5 miles/4 km south of the town core, which means you are away from the crowds yet still within easy reach of everything. Not only will you be able to enjoy a restful day on a quiet beach, you will have a quiet night as well – no bar or restaurant noise, just swaying coconut fronds and the occasional fish jumping in the water!
Town is not far away when you want to go in for some live music, shopping, restaurants, etc. But there are things close by too; here are a few things within walking distance of Sunset Beach:
--Suya Tour operators (1 minute walk)
--Marin’s, a small grocery store (2 minute walk)
--Restaurants: Lone Star Grill & Black Orchid (4 minute walk)
--Island Time Beach Bar (10 minute walk)
--A beach yard filled with coconut sculptures! (5 minute walk)
The Belize Barrier Reef, the longest in the western hemisphere, is just 1/2 mile off shore. The water is warm and crystal clear--ideal for scuba diving, snorkeling and fishing.
It's also easy to take a day trip from the resort to visit Mayan sites such as Altun Ha and Lamanai; or a trip to observe some of the 500 species of birds found in Belize and/or catch a glimpse of monkeys, manatees and crocodiles in the wild!
Most people rent golf carts when visiting Ambergris Caye (it’s not possible to rent a car). Our concierge team can arrange your golf cart rental and have it waiting for you at Sunset Beach on your arrival if you wish. Rental costs depend on the cart size and time of year but start at about US$275/week.
As mentioned, there are also complimentary bikes & kayaks available at the resort. It’s about a 10 minute bike ride into town.
It’s also possible to walk to town, either via the beach (40 minutes to an hour, depending on how fast you walk) or via the road (slightly longer).
Taxis are also available.
