Cottage, 2 bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-5)
Rugosa Cottage is one of 3 weekly rental cottages available from Queen Anne's Cottages. Lovely and private enough for a couple's romantic retreat, this cottage has been recently (completely) updated to also be a comfortable vacation home base for families of 4-5. Queen Anne's Cottages is an eco-friendly, pet friendly, mini-resort type property. Each of the 3 cottages have their own personality, privacy, wifi network, parking, recycling, and specific amenities.
Accommodating up to 4-5 people, guests in Rugosa Cottage have loved the quiet, woodsy, cozy and bright ocean view from inside the cottage as well as outside on the deck. Preserving the original 1930s aesthetic charm of the cottage, our updates were made with our modern guests' comfort and ease in mind. Snuggle in to the king size bed in the master bedroom, which is dressed with high quality bedding and is so comfortable that guests have contacted us to ask about the brand of mattress! Considered either a cozy reading nook or a bedroom for the kids, the upstairs bedroom has terrific views of the ocean, and is equipped with a twin daybed with trundle, as well as a tv and a comfy reading chair. The small but mighty kitchen is intentionally stocked with items to make sure your kitchen time isn't a chore: high quality cookware, sharp knives, a french press AND a drip coffee maker, microwave, blender, toaster, and everything you need for home based lobster bakes! For grilling types, we've provided a propane grill (with an extra tank and all necessary grill tools) on the deck, so that you can really enjoy grilling with a view. We've made sure that the down filled sectional sofa (with twin sleeper) in the living room is super comfy and inviting, with ample lighting for readers and knitters. While this is a great place to unplug, there are 3 TVs equipped with cable, and high speed wifi internet which is fast enough for you to stream your favorite shows and movies on your tablet or laptop. (The master bedroom tv is a smart tv.)
Though the setting is at the end of a private, well maintained dirt road, Queen Anne's Cottages is close to all that Mt. Desert Island has to offer, (5 minutes to Acadia National Park!) and is a short distance to downtown Bar Harbor (5 minutes beyond the National Park entrance.) For water activities, guests from all 3 cottages can enjoy the best of both worlds: the private beach, great for swimming, kayaking and exploring, is steps away...but when the Maine ocean proves too cold, there is a beautiful, solar heated, 80 degree saltwater pool that kids and adults love (open Memorial Day through Labor Day.) At the end of the day, our oceanside fire pit area is a wonderful spot to enjoy our world renowned sunsets, roast marshmallows, and maybe meet a few of the other guests to exchange notes on your vacation happenings. If you are booking well in advance, several families have rented 2 or all 3 of the cottages for their week long family vacations/reunions. Our other VRBO/Homeaway listing numbers are: Sea Heather Cottage- 352349 (lodging for up to 8-10 guests) and Waterlily Cottage - 389012 (great for a couple, or a family of 3 with a young child.) Additionally, you can search for Queen Annes Cottages online, to find our website for more information about the property (VRBO does not allow us to include the link here).
Whether planning a family vacation or a getaway for 2, we would love to be your choice for a beautiful, comfy, and fun spot to stay while exploring and relaxing on Mt Desert Island!

Chelcey Dunham purchased this Cottage in 2000
Why Chelcey Dunham chose Bar Harbor
This property is all of the above: woodsy/quiet/private, close to town (10 minute drive), super close to Acadia National Park (5 minute drive), and has amazing views of Eastern Bay! Past guests have loved the short distance to quiet, comfy solitude after a day in town or on the trails. As part of our eco-friendly efforts, we rely on natural, chemical free cleaning products, including irritant-free, plastic free, and organic "soap berries" (look it up! you'll love them!) for our laundry detergent. Our plastic-free garbage bags are compostable, and our recycling program is well established and easy to use. We also donate all proceeds from bottle and can redemption to our local SPCA.
What makes this Cottage unique
We can spot on any given day: Bald Eagles, Deer, Porpoise, Hummingbirds, Seals, and a variety of other birds and wildlife. Kids and adults alike LOVE the huge, solar heated, saltwater pool. We are pet friendly and pet safe (at the end of a dirt road!), and our pets are more than happy to befriend you (if you like) when you find yourself missing your pets at home.

Pictures and description as advertised
This was our second stay at Rugosa over the last few years and it never disappoints. The close proximity to town yet feeling like you are in a quiet setting with trees and ocean right out the front door is the best. Chelcey did an excellent job of thinking of everything. Can't wait to come back!
great location to explore Acadia Nationalpark
A tidy, bright efficient cottage right on the water
Newly redecorated with white walls with different textures, a bank of clerestory windows that bring in so much light we were forever thinking we had left a light on, and charming furnishings, Rugosa cottage is a welcoming base from which to explore Acadia National Park. The second story room is bright and private and could easily accommodate one or two others. The downstairs bed is really comfortable and the living area is bright. The kitchen is small and well-furnished but it is hard for more than one person at a time to work there. We loved being on the water and being able to walk down to the beach, which exists only at low tide. Sunsets are beautiful (and I hear so are sunrises) over the water. We saw a red fox and two deer crossing the dirt road that winds through the woods to the house. Chelcey is very close and willing to offer advice. The cottage is no more than 10 min away from our favorite restaurants, Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound (the best place to eat lobster the way it is meant to be eaten--messily), The ChartRoom, and Sweet Pea's Café. We will be back! Sharon and Adam from MA
Cozy, well-appointed cottage in beautiful setting
We loved this cottage - very compact but well designed for practical, stylish comfort - with access to the water and stunning sunsets and an easy drive to Acadia and town. If you want a spacious rental, this isn't it. That said, we found three adults were comfortable and we would absolutely return. The cottage was sparkling clean with all needed amenities like dishwasher, washer and dryer, coffee maker. There's also a large deck and one of the highlights was watching the porpoises pass in the morning as I drank my coffee on the beach steps. Thanks to our hosts!
A Perfectionist's Paradise!
The Rugosa cottage was immaculate, well thought out and had more than ample storage areas. The kitchen is very well stocked with clean, great quality: pots, pans, utensils, dishes, toaster, microwave, fridge, oven, dish washer, French press coffee maker, etc.. The cottage is bright and cheerful with nicely done color accents throughout, that make it quaint and charming. The bathroom is spotless, up to date and frankly, much nicer than mine at home!! The cottage and it's setting are much nicer than described!! A rare and pleasant surprise! The owner/manager Chelcey, is very pleasant, knowledgable and wonderful to work with. She is also available either in person or by phone, should a question occur. Not always the case at many other places. Five Stars!!!! - Tim & Sylvia C.
Perfect, quiet setting with great proximity to all the sights in the area
The Rugosa cottage was the perfect place for our family of four to spend our summer vacation. The cottage is cozy, clean, comfortable and very well equipped. The homeowner went above and beyond to provide comfortable furniture, linens and anything you could need in the kitchen. When we did have a minor issue with the cottage the homeowner responded immediately and the problem was fixed the next day. We loved the quiet setting in the woods with a view of the water from the deck. The pool was amazing - definitely a favorite for our children while the fire pit and steps down to the beach were a nice touch. We definitely would recommend the Rugosa and would not hesitate to return again.
The main entrance to Acadia National Park is located about 5 minutes down the road from Rugosa Cottage. Just 5 minutes beyond that is downtown Bar Harbor, with loads of great shops and restaurants! The exact address of Rugosa Cottage is 63 Shore Acres Road, in Bar Harbor.
