Upon arrival in Cartagena, our multilingual (Spanish/English/French) apartment manager will meet you at the apartment at the agreed upon time to let you in, show you the place, and give you keys. Should you have a question about the apartment or you want tourism assistance, laundry service, a cook or cooking class while there, feel free to ask him!

If you’d like a smaller or larger place, or if you’d like to book multiple apartments (parties of 1-12 can be accommodated), please let me know.

We work with community organization Fundación Pescador de Letras in the Boquilla section of Cartagena, plus Cartagena Paws, supporting street animals, & would love to have your help!

We look forward to having you!

About Barbara Smalley, Vacation Rentals Cartagena

I've lived most of my life in the U.S. but have also lived for a couple of months to up to two years in different countries: Germany, Spain, Australia, Colombia, Ecuador & Belize. Since 2011 I've been living a somewhat nomadic lifestyle while exploring, working & volunteering in new & old places -- I've mostly been in Colombia & Belize but also exploring other areas. It's a great way to keep learning!

I was fortunate to meet a couple from Dallas, who own the Cartagena, Colombia, & Ambergris Caye, Belize, vacation rentals I'm listing. They asked me to help them out and I've fallen into doing something that I love -- helping people like you with their travels. Let me help you with your dream vacation! In the fall of 2015, I was lucky enough to be able to buy my own apartment in Cartagena, Colombia, and rent out the second bedroom when I'm there and the whole apartment when I'm not. I love playing direct host also!

We also partner with 'Pack for a Purpose', an organization that links travelers who'd like to help fulfill wish lists of non-profits in developing countries. We work with Fundación Pescador de Letras, a community organization in Cartagena, plus Cartagena Paws, supporting street animals; and in Belize we partner with Ambergris Caye Elementary School (ACES) and the Saga Humane Society in San Pedro. We'd love to have your help!

Thank you,

Barbara Smalley

Great location!

  • 4 of 5

We rented 2 of the 3 apartments of this complex in the old city of Cartagena over New Years Eve for 5 nights. We were a party of 7 (3 adults 2 teens and 2 kids). Barbara, the booking manager, was very helpful, responsive, and a great communicator (always on top of emails). Benjamin, our local point of contact, met us the day we arrived and gave us a great walk through of the apartments. He was also incredibly responsive and helped us when we locked ourselves out of the safe! He gave us great recommendations around the area of places to eat, beaches to check out, and what to avoid like seafood from street vendors. He was available to us throughout our stay and we communicated with him through whatsapp. Everyone in Colombia uses WhatsApp so it is best to get it! Both apartments had nice kitchens, although they are not stocked as well as we would have liked. They are pretty bare minimum, but that said they made it easy to make meals, when needed. The super market is very close, so it was a quick walk to grab milk, cereal, bread, etc. We also enjoyed our morning coffee or afternoon beers and cuba libres on the balcony. We were able to check out the action from there and it was so fun. We had some trouble with hot water, but Benjamin came immediately and got it fixed. The air conditioner and fans worked well. The only thing we feel needs to be addressed is in the larger apartment , the sunken dining room needs to be safer. All of us banged our toes/feet and it seems it would be good to have a rug or something that allows the eye to realize there is this step down. All in all we enjoyed our stay in such a central location with great property managers! Cartagena was magnificent and we cant wait to return.

Owner's Response: We were thrilled to host your family over the extended New Year's weekend & happy to know you had such a good time. Glad that Benjamin was so helpful & such a great resource. I have asked you privately what you think the kitchens could use because we think they're pretty well stocked! The walls around the base of the step you mentioned has been painted to make it step more obvious; a rug might be too dangerous but I have requested privately additional feedback from you on this as well! The balcony is indeed the best and Cartagena is gorgeous -- look forward to having you back, just send me a WhatsApp message when you're ready! :)

Very nice accommodations right in the middle of the old city

Our party of 9 rented all three units (2 bdrm, 1 bdrm, studio) for three nights so we had the floor to ourselves. We had all ages in our party (from 12 to 78), and had no complaints from anyone. Barbara, the booking manager, was extremely helpful prior to our trip. She helped arrange our excursions and was very responsive with answers to our questions. She provides a very detailed information brochure that includes details on the rental, tours, food, etc. It was very comforting having her guide us through our trip planning! The local manager, Benjamin, met us on our arrival and gave us a thorough introduction to the place and area. He was available to us throughout our stay and we communicated with him through whatsapp which I suggest you download to your phone as we used it with all our tour guides during our Colombian stay. Though we didn't spend much time in the rooms, all were very nicely kept with a/c units in main rooms and each bedroom. The studio and 1 bdrm have balconies that overlook Calle 7 street so you can watch the street activity while drinking your wine/cerveza's in the evening. Each unit also has a kitchen (studio is more of a kitchenette) with coffee maker, microwave, etc for making your own meals as necessary. During one of our evenings, we had Benjamin arrange to have a local woman come in and cook us an authentic Colombian meal which was delicious.

We went on the mud volcano tour with Rony which also included an ecotour of the mangroves near Boquilla and a meal. We also went on the scuba/snorkling tour that takes you out to an island on ~45 min boat ride. I recommend both tours. You can get more details/reviews on tripadvisor.

All said, we enjoyed Casa de Moneda very much and our stay in Cartagena. We would definitely return to Moneda on our next trip to Cartagena.

These apartments are located in the San Diego section of the magical Old City of Cartagena, within the 500 year old Spanish colonial walls. Colonial architecture abounds!

The building is on Calle de la Moneda, which is a busy and lively street during the day but quiet at night. As the main public transportation hubs (for buses and shared taxis) are a couple of blocks straight down this street, Calle de la Moneda is widely used by Cartageneros as they go to and from work, school, etc. (and to shop!). You are in the heart of “real” Cartagena on Calle de la Moneda!

The street is lined with shops and a couple of small, inexpensive restaurants. Just about everything is closed by 8 pm, however, so you’re not disturbed by noise during the night.

At the far end of Calle de la Moneda is the Exito department store which sells everything from groceries to electronics plus has an ATM. One street away in the other direction you'll find the popular Juan Valdez coffee shop and the main University of Cartagena building. And a block around the corner is the beautiful Parque Fernández de Madrid surrounded by plenty of nice restaurants and cafes.

Churches, museums, other shops, bars, the old city wall, and the Caribbean Sea are only a few blocks away. You are within close proximity to everything here!

Walking is the best way to get around the Walled City – it’s great wandering the maze of quaint streets. But you are never far from the surrounding walls so you don’t have to worry about accidentally straying too far!

If you are in a hurry or want to venture outside the walls, taxis are inexpensive and easily flagged on the street. We are a 5-10 minute/US$6 taxi ride from the airport, and a 5-10 minute/US$3 taxi ride away from other sites/areas, such as San Felipe Castle (the huge old Spanish fort) or the tourist dock (for the boats to the Rosario Islands, where many prefer to go for the beach), or the beaches of Bocagrande, Laguito and Castillogrande.
