About the property

Watch the sun and the moon rise over the Delaware Bay from this quiet, comfortable beachfront retreat. This easy-going cottage offers a laid-back place to celebrate life, especially for those who travel with their dogs.

Cook your favorite meals in our full kitchen, already supplied with spices and condiments, or go out to a decadent meal in one of the area's gourmet restaurants. The beach resort offers numerous activities from golf and watersports to theater and tax-free shopping, all within a few minutes' drive, but this is the place you want to call home at the end of the day.

Enjoy the romance of a candlelit evening in front of the cast-iron stove in winter, a bonfire on your private beach in summer if the wind is right, or just a simple moment of solitude wandering along the water's edge in any season. Retreat to your bedroom (one queen, one double bed) and fall asleep with the sound of the waves lapping the shore.

There's one full bath and, in summer, an outdoor shower to comfortably rinse off the salt and sand. You can also hook up a quick-connect hose to rinse off your pup with warm water.

Only two hours from Baltimore, Washington and Philadelphia, yet a world away from the stress and hassles. Escape the hustle of your work week with a relaxing weekend.

Take time to rest, to play. Make time for yourself, and for those you love. Come to the Cottage at Prime Hook Beach, where we provide all the basics for your comfort.

Why Jessica Stiner chose Delaware

** This home has had many new upgrades during the 2017 winter season.**

This cottage with a fully-glassed in porch overlooking the Delaware Bay makes you feel as if you are outdoors year-round. The open floor plan affords a view of the water from the back door, through the kitchen and living room, to the front porch.

Guests describe the feeling of tranquility that begins the moment they leave the highway and wind their way through the 5 miles of fields and forest and marshes of the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge.

Prime Hook Beach is a lovely community, close enough to upscale restaurants and tax-free shopping at the outlets, but far enough away to feel like you are in another era.

What makes this cottage unique

Having a private, sandy beach right at your front door allows you to set up your stuff for the day, and be able to easily pop in and out of the house for a cold drink, lunch, your favorite paperback, another dog toy.

When the wind is right, you can have a bonfire or just lay back and watch as the stars come out. You can take sleeping bags out to spend the night watching the mid-August sky for shooting stars or enjoy watching (from the shelter of the porch) the occasional summer thunderstorm sweep across the bay, the rain dancing on the tin roof.

[a note written from the guests' dogs to mine]

Thank you, Freddy, for sharing Cottage on the Bay with us, and for the wonderful toys. What a wonderful hostess you are. We rate it a "five-woof stay."

Thank you,

Perfect stay for those with 2 or 4 legs

  • 5 of 5

My Husband and I spent a wonderful 6 days in this adorable, updated bungalow on the beach. Our dogs just loved the fenced in front yard where we could all enjoy the private outside patio area together freely and the "back yard" which was the beach. Gorgeous views of the dunes and water from the front porch where we ate our breakfast. The house had everything we needed to cook a few meals although we enjoyed our trips to Milton and Rehobeth for dinners out as well. The weather was unseasonably warm so we really had the best of both worlds, perfect beach days and hardly any other people. Everyone we did meet was nice and the birdwatching was amazing. We would love to return, one of our best beach vacations with our dogs yet.

Need to step it up - going downhill.

We have rented at this location many times with the previous owner (who was wonderful and kept the place in tip-top shape) and now twice with the current owner. From someone who has been to this rental in the past it is obvious that the upkeep is not what it once was. We were pleased to see the cleaning was improved since our last trip, but the living room furniture needs to be replaced; it is VERY uncomfortable and dirty too. Without the living room furniture being replaced it is doubtful we will rent here again. Also a guide to work the 4 remote controls that run the TV, DVD & CD player would be helpful - never did figure out how to play a DVD or CD. The home is still decorated with all the little nick-nacks from the previous owner - much of it broken - clean up the place and make it easier for the cleaning service to do their job. We understand that keeping plants & flowers in the planters and gardens is difficult especially in a rental, but get rid of the stuff, just don't let it sit there to rust, break, blow away or get stepped on. And the tattered and dirty paperwork explaining the home, amenities & location is many, many years old and is the same one put together by the previous owner with her contact information scribbled out and the agent's scribbled in - it is a small thing but it demonstrates that very little effort or attention has been made.

Also, after booking on VRBO I mailed a check to the address VBRO listed, but after being e-billed by the agent I learned that the address was not correct new address (also there was a slight discrepancy in the amount owed), so I had to place a call to her, luckily she was having the old mailbox forwarded. When I mailed the final check I wrote a note asking that I be emailed to let me know the check arrived - I did not call this time, but I also did not receive the courtesy of being emailed. I can only assume the agent has a much busier life than we have as professional people. They need to step up their game.

Peaceful and relaxing

  • 4 of 5

Gorgeous marsh and bay vistas, quiet, peaceful and private. Lots of great birds and wildlife as well as awesome sunrises and sunsets. That's why we returned this year for two weeks, rather than just one. Plus we did not sit in traffic at all on way the down or way home from the north. Perfect location for relaxing and getting away from it all!

The cottage was right on the beach and that was our goal! It was great to be able to walk right out the back door and be able to be on the beach. Even though it was the end of November, we enjoyed a sunny and warm day walking the beach and collecting sea shells. Our golden retriever was thrilled to run in the sand. The fenced yard was a plus, as well.

Our concern about our stay was the cleanliness of the cottage. There were dead crickets, old fly tape stuck to walls and we needed to wash the dust and cobwebs off any dishes/glasses we used. Also, the front door (facing the bay) could not be opened and therefore there was only one entrance/exit available to us.

lack of maintenance

  • 2 of 5

This is a nice place and a quiet setting. We walked in and the cleaning crew did a poor job. Two days later the a.c. vents started dripping on our bed Soaking the mattress. Called mgr she said it's a holiday hard to get repaired. Mean while I took out blocked filter. Two days later same thing again. This time repair man called. In the mean time we couldn't use the bedroom. We did receive a meager refund. But too little too late.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately, there are issues that can arise in a home, even when guests are staying. I spoke with this guest about the home's condition. I offered to contact the cleaners immediately and have them come back and reclean, but the guest had declined. There was a condensation drip coming from the vent in the bedroom. Since is was Labor Day and in the evening hours, it was difficult to have our maintenance person come to the property. After some troubleshooting, the guest did pull the filter and I recommended to decrease the central air. The drip had stopped when I called to check on the guests a little later. There is mainenance that is required on a home. Unfortunately, problems can sneak up at anytime. The same problem happened again, but I had a maintenance person to the home within the hour to resolve the issue. Our guests are very important to us and we are willing to go above and beyond to resolve any concerns or issues.
