About Melissa Hampton

Dave is a Professor at Emory Medical School, a bio-chemist, and has a research laboratory. He works on oxidative stress, and is widely-known in the research community for having discovered a group of enzymes that are important in cancer and heart disease. To prove he is not a total nerd, he also paints and plays finger-style guitar. Melissa is a TV/Video producer/director in Atlanta, works frequently with the Public Broadcasting Service and has an active business as a producer of web-site videos for corporations and non-profit organizations. She loves to cook, snow-ski (just not in Mexico) and is a classically trained pianist and violinist.

Melissa Hampton purchased this villa in 2005

Why Melissa Hampton chose Playa Las Gatas

Dave grew up on the border between the U.S. and Mexico and has always loved the rich culture of the country and the generous, warm character of the people. He has also developed a passion for Aztec mythology and has enjoyed using these ancient stories as inspiration for his art; many of his original oils decorate the walls of Casa del Platero. Melissa was originally (and still is) a Francophile and hoped for retirement surrounded by vineyards of Provence but Mexico has won her over with its spectacular weather, scenery, and the loving kindness of our Mexican friends who have taught her to slow down and enjoy each day. Dave and Melissa are both foodies and have enjoyed learning to cook simple with fresh, local fresh fish which comes into the Marina daily, on local boats.

We love the rhythm of life in Zihuatanejo; our days center around walks on the beach, a trip to the market for fresh produce; an afternoon siesta in the hammock with a book, and our daily appointment with the sunset on our patio. Zihua has taught us how to enjoy and value each day.

What makes this villa unique

We offer a full-time, on-site staff to care just for you. They are awesome!

The house is very private, surrounded by white, adobe walls, and sits up on a small knoll providing a panoramic view of Zihuatanejo Bay. Access to the beach is right out our front gate. The house is decorated with original oils by Dave; native art from other parts of Mexico that we collect when we travel...masks; wood statues; terra cotta statues, etc. The downstairs kitchen underwent a complete renovation in summer of 2014 and offers all new appliances; granite counters; hand-painted native tiles and all the amenities you need. The house is open to the constant breeze off the Bay, has both a front and back patio, lush tropical garden and comfortable interiors.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We thought we were going to Zihua just to hang out and get some rays but what a treat to stay in a private home so beautifully decorated, and with a fantastic gourmet kitchen. And the staff of two, a husband and wife, couldn't do enough for us. My kids loved getting to practice their Spanish! But the language was no barrier at all. These two obviously love their job and take hospitality seriously. And the view of the bay is gorgeous. We'd love to come back next year.

Perfect location, great pool, wonderful views,

  • 4 of 5

Our multi-generation family, including a 4 and a 6 year old, rented the whole house for two weeks over Christmas. The owner went out of her way to make sure that we had a Christmas tree and beach toys for our grandchildren. The location made it super easy to access the beach whether we wanted a walk or a swim or to rent loungers and enjoy all the Mexican families on holiday. There was almost always someone in the pool, often just hanging out looking at the view. The caretakers were very helpful especially when it came to shopping (mahi mahi and prawns were a favourite) and cooking. We will all remember Mireye's fish tacos cooking lesson and the fresh OJ and fruit she cut up every morning. We enjoyed eating together when we wanted to without having to go out for dinner. Lunches on the beach were fun. We loved the birds and the butterflies that inhabit the property. A few things to be aware of: a little bug spray will go a long way to enjoying your evening. This was an issue for the couple in the fourth bedroom that is not completely enclosed on its own. This house succeeds more on its location, pool and staff than on its actual accommodation. It is a little tired, could use some bathroom updates, better lighting and fans in places and a few simple things like places to hang beach things, etc. Would we go back again? Absolutely!

Casa Del Platero: A Week in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

I just returned from a week in paradise at Casa Del Platero. This beautiful and well appointed home is located conveniently on La Ropa Beach in Zihuatanejo Bay. If you enjoy spectacular sunsets while sipping margaritas, Casa Del Platero is your next vacation spot. The recently renovated chef’s kitchen is well equipped for cooking fresh local fish from the market. Dining al fresco on the large family style table on the covered patio was perfect. Afternoons were spent snoozing in one of the two hammocks or sitting on the ledge in the infinity pool overlooking the bay, where there was a constant breeze. The beach is a very short walk out of the front gate where restaurants and seaside bars are located. The bedrooms are comfortable and have air conditioning in three of the four rooms. However, in early April we had no need to turn on the AC since the breezes and lull of the waves enabled comfortable sleeping. Casa Del Platero has beautiful furnishings and is decorated with original oil paintings. The bonus to our stay was the friendly and efficient on-site staff who kept things clean and running smoothly. For a nominal fee, they will cook meals as well. Lovely stay in a beautiful locale. We plan to return next year!

Trip of a lifetime

  • 4 of 5

Having been to Zihua. 30+ years ago I was concerned about over development that might have ruined the magnificent bay and the quaint town, the laid-back La Ropa Beach vibe – when we first stepped in the gate, the feeling of "ahhh , it's perfect " told me we had made the right choice. The design of the house takes perfect advantage of the site and the views, with maximum privacy, but always open to views and the wonderful breezes. The pool is wonderful, the staff could not be more friendly and the food was delicious!

The perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We had an incredible time at Casa del Platero! The location made it easy for us to go back and forth between the beach and house, or grab a taxi to go into town. The view from almost any room in the house was breathtaking, and there were plenty of places for all 8 of us to sit and take it all in. Laco and Mireye were extremely accommodating- whether picking up beer or making dinner they weee always available and willing.

We will definitely be back again!

Paradise overlooking La Ropa Beach

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 8 family and friends were looking for a house to stay on our first visit to Zihuatanejo. Casa del Platero was the perfect fit for us. The house is beautiful. We rented the entire house. Our days were spent enjoying coffee in the morning either on the upstairs patio or around the pool. Mireya cooked us a wonderful breakfast every morning. Every afternoon either after being on the beach or doing some excursion we would be back enjoying the infinity pool. Laco was so helpful with helping us with shopping, getting places, scheduling snorkeling trips and surf lessons not to mention the great margaritas he would make for us. Watching the sunset from the upstairs house with the huge living room windows open was great. There was plenty of room for us, the one bedroom upstairs is pretty open with not much privacy but that was not a problem for us. We felt like we were at home, Laco and Mireya were wonderful. The setting is beautiful and so peaceful. We loved it there and plan to return.

Casa del platero is truly a winner

  • 5 of 5

It feels like home! We wanted a place that slept 8 and this did. One bedroom in upper level is a little awkward with no closet and no door but not a problem if you are comfortable with who you are traveling with. The view from upper level is spectacular and where we spent early mornings with coffee and good book. Lower level has one bedroom and outside patio. Dining room has huge table and meals prepared by mureya (sp) were enjoyed by all. We had her do breakfast every am and also a couple of dinners. Her husband took care of the grounds, chauffeured us if we needed, provided valuable information on excursions and shopping as well as making us one darn good margarita almost every day!

The pool is small and perfect for hanging out with friends. sunsets from pool were fabulous. Just across the road is the southern end of La Ropa beach. It's about a mile before going up hill into town. Get a massage on the beach and have shrimp salad at Paty's. We will definitely try to stay at casa del platero on out next visit to Zihau.

only draw back would be for those that are not able to maneuver steps.

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to have your group stay with us. We love it when guests enjoy the same things about the house that we do...i.e. the awesome view, watching the Bay 'wake up', while sipping morning coffee and tea on the terrace. And thanks for your kind words about our hardworking staff. We agree they are fantastic. Thanks for being great guests. We'll look forward to your next visit. Melissa and Dave
