|Minimum Stay||4 - 7 nights|
Casa del Platero sits at the south end of La Ropa Beach. Secluded and private, the house sits behind white adobe walls, offering privacy within as well as direct access to La Ropa Beach out our front gate. Our infinity pool is a lovely spot to watch the gorgeous sunsets over Zihua Bay. We have a full-time, on-site staff to advise and assist you 24/7, and daily maid service. First morning's breakfast is included in your rental. Other meals can be prepared upon request. The house can be rented in three configurations: Whole house (4 br/3 ba); Lower House (2 br/2/ba), or Upper House (2 br/1 ba). Each 'house' has a private entrance, complete kitchen, living area and access to the pool.
Dave is a Professor at Emory Medical School, a bio-chemist, and has a research laboratory. He works on oxidative stress, and is widely-known in the research community for having discovered a group of enzymes that are important in cancer and heart disease. To prove he is not a total nerd, he also paints and plays finger-style guitar. Melissa is a TV/Video producer/director in Atlanta, works frequently with the Public Broadcasting Service and has an active business as a producer of web-site videos for corporations and non-profit organizations. She loves to cook, snow-ski (just not in Mexico) and is a classically trained pianist and violinist.
Melissa Hampton purchased this villa in 2005
Dave grew up on the border between the U.S. and Mexico and has always loved the rich culture of the country and the generous, warm character of the people. He has also developed a passion for Aztec mythology and has enjoyed using these ancient stories as inspiration for his art; many of his original oils decorate the walls of Casa del Platero. Melissa was originally (and still is) a Francophile and hoped for retirement surrounded by vineyards of Provence but Mexico has won her over with its spectacular weather, scenery, and the loving kindness of our Mexican friends who have taught her to slow down and enjoy each day. Dave and Melissa are both foodies and have enjoyed learning to cook simple with fresh, local ingredients...like fresh fish which comes into the Marina daily, on local boats.
We love the rhythm of life in Zihuatanejo; our days center around walks on the beach, a trip to the market for fresh produce; an afternoon siesta in the hammock with a book, and our daily appointment with the sunset on our patio. Zihua has taught us how to enjoy and value each day.
We offer a full-time, on-site staff to care just for you. They are awesome!
The house is very private, surrounded by white, adobe walls, and sits up on a small knoll providing a panoramic view of Zihuatanejo Bay. Access to the beach is right out our front gate. The house is decorated with original oils by Dave; native art from other parts of Mexico that we collect when we travel...masks; wood statues; terra cotta statues, etc. The downstairs kitchen underwent a complete renovation in summer of 2014 and offers all new appliances; granite counters; hand-painted native tiles and all the amenities you need. The house is open to the constant breeze off the Bay, has both a front and back patio, lush tropical garden and comfortable interiors.
We thought we were going to Zihua just to hang out and get some rays but what a treat to stay in a private home so beautifully decorated, and with a fantastic gourmet kitchen. And the staff of two, a husband and wife, couldn't do enough for us. My kids loved getting to practice their Spanish! But the language was no barrier at all. These two obviously love their job and take hospitality seriously. And the view of the bay is gorgeous. We'd love to come back next year.
Our group of 8 family and friends were looking for a house to stay on our first visit to Zihuatanejo. Casa del Platero was the perfect fit for us. The house is beautiful. We rented the entire house. Our days were spent enjoying coffee in the morning either on the upstairs patio or around the pool. Mireya cooked us a wonderful breakfast every morning. Every afternoon either after being on the beach or doing some excursion we would be back enjoying the infinity pool. Laco was so helpful with helping us with shopping, getting places, scheduling snorkeling trips and surf lessons not to mention the great margaritas he would make for us. Watching the sunset from the upstairs house with the huge living room windows open was great. There was plenty of room for us, the one bedroom upstairs is pretty open with not much privacy but that was not a problem for us. We felt like we were at home, Laco and Mireya were wonderful. The setting is beautiful and so peaceful. We loved it there and plan to return.
It feels like home! We wanted a place that slept 8 and this did. One bedroom in upper level is a little awkward with no closet and no door but not a problem if you are comfortable with who you are traveling with. The view from upper level is spectacular and where we spent early mornings with coffee and good book. Lower level has one bedroom and outside patio. Dining room has huge table and meals prepared by mureya (sp) were enjoyed by all. We had her do breakfast every am and also a couple of dinners. Her husband took care of the grounds, chauffeured us if we needed, provided valuable information on excursions and shopping as well as making us one darn good margarita almost every day!
The pool is small and perfect for hanging out with friends. sunsets from pool were fabulous. Just across the road is the southern end of La Ropa beach. It's about a mile before going up hill into town. Get a massage on the beach and have shrimp salad at Paty's. We will definitely try to stay at casa del platero on out next visit to Zihau.
only draw back would be for those that are not able to maneuver steps.
This beautiful home is tucked into a lush tropical garden on the hillside overlooking Playa La Ropa. It is spacious, immaculate, and well appointed. Handwoven Mexican fabrics, tiles, and furnishings (including several perfectly situated hammocks) enhance the warmth and authenticity of each room. An infinity pool overlooks the Pacific Ocean, where we could watch the sunsets while enjoying a delicious margarita! What a delight it was to stay there!, The gracious caretakers, Laco and his wife Mireya, tended to the house, our requests and questions, and prepared delicious dinners by special arrangement. Walking along the soft sand beach was a daily ritual. Taking the local bus to town was convenient, inexpensive, and fun. Our week long stay was a welcome respite from a long snowy winter!
Casa de Platero has a comfortable, open floor plan with good beds & baths. Open air dining plus a covered patio are adjacent to the infinity pool which has superb views & sunsets. We think it has the best location available! It is at the end of the beach & very private. All beach activities are within 5 min walking. Restaurants, taxis, & best of all, the bus which takes you to the market & downtown are 1/2 block away. The house staff couple are warm & welcoming plus very helpful. We highly recommend this property.
This was a lovely setting at the end of a gorgeous beach. The villa was large and very accommodating for our family of 8 adults. We celebrated my fathers 85th birthday that week.
The weather was fabulous!
Overall, our family enjoyed the property. It was very comfortable and well located at the end of Playa Ropa. The property assistants, Laco and Mireye were very helpful in keeping the villa in good order during our stay. On two occasions, Laco and Mireye made us dinner which was excellent. While Playa La Ropa is OK, I would recommend a short 15 minute walk to Playa Las Gatas. We would also recommend taking an excursion (25 minute cab ride) to Playa Blanca and Barra de Potosi which offers a more pristine beach away from the crowds. In terms of restaurants, I would highly recommend Carmelitas Cafe in Zihuatanejo. They offer an excellent authentic Mexican menu. Also, we would recommend the restaurant Tentaciones which sits up on the hill overlooking the Bay. The food is exquisite and the views excellent. I would highly recommend having dinner a half hour before sunset otherwise you will bake in the sun as there is no sun protection. The only thing that kept us from giving the property a 5 star rating would be the barking dogs on both sides during the day and nights. Also, and sad to say, there is a lot of garbage that gets washed into the Bay every day ...seems that the locals don't take much pride in their little bit of paradise.
