About Mary Tafelsky

This family cottage is owned by six siblings. Our great grandparents were pioneers in the Grand Traverse Area arriving in 1870. Our Grandfather was born in 1885 at the family farm just a stone's throw from the cottage we own today. We have a long history in the Traverse City Area. In the early 1900's our family was part of the Straub Brothers and Amiotte Candy Company here it Traverse City which did business around the country. Our Dad was the owner of Trude Hardware, a historic business in Downtown Traverse City for over 70 years. Our family still owns the Masonic Building in Downtown Traverse City where the hardware was located.

Mary Tafelsky purchased this cottage in 1948

Why Mary Tafelsky chose Northern Michigan

This cottage was built by our Dad when he returned from WWII. He was a young, single man then, and this lake was sparsely populated then with only a few cottages on the entire 650 acre lake. He built the cottage in the evenings after he got off work with logs and field stone from the local area. We originally owned over 900 feet of lakefront and 17 acres. Over time it was necessary to sell some of the property to reduce the cost of taxes. Today we still own 500 feet on the lake and nine acres with one of the best views on the lake. We have been renting is out as a vacation home since 1950 as well as using it for our own family. We consider it a family treasure and keep it very well maintained.

What makes this cottage unique

This is truly one of the premier views on Spider Lake.

Hidden gem!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed a week at the cabin with family. The location for us was amazing. We like some privacy and that's what we got. The cabin itself is an older cabin that has been nicely kept up with everything you would need. The yard is a park like setting with awesome breezes. It is located in the no wake cove, which made kayaking and swimming very nice.

We fished around all the 8 coves of the lake and this cove was by far the best. You could fish from the dock if you wanted.

Although you feel like your away from it all, Traverse City is literally 15 min away so if you needed anything it wasn't a far drive. We loved this cabin and would definitely stay again. Had an awesome time!! Thanks Mary 😀?

Quaint, quiet, convenient

  • 5 of 5

Clean and quiet Cove with a great view. All amenities needed for cooking. Boats/kayaks provided were fun, and the dock was perfect for swimming and the water was shallow and very clear. Fishing was good.

Only about 15 minutes to all the fun things in traverse city. Would stay here again. No AC but we didn't need it with the windows open and fans going and the nights were quite cool.

Perfect way to spend time with my sons

  • 5 of 5

I chose this cottage so that my boys, 6 & 9, could spend time exploring, fishing, getting dirty, and most importantly, NOT using electronics. It was such a nice time. Very well furnished and comfortable cottage with interesting things to look at in every room. The view was amazing and the fishing was great! My boys were pulling fish out of the water with a net and bread crumbs off the dock. We kayaked, grilled, had a campfire, and did all the things you would imagine doing in the summer up north. Since we were so close to Traverse City and Leelanau, we were able to shop, dine, and also go to the beach on the Bay. Mary is very sweet and helpful and you can see how proud she is of the family history in this great gem of a cottage. We hope to visit again!
