About Mary Tafelsky

This family cottage is owned by six siblings. Our great grandparents were pioneers in the Grand Traverse Area arriving in 1870. Our Grandfather was born in 1885 at the family farm just a stone's throw from the cottage we own today. We have a long history in the Traverse City Area. In the early 1900's our family was part of the Straub Brothers and Amiotte Candy Company here it Traverse City which did business around the country. Our Dad was the owner of Trude Hardware, a historic business in Downtown Traverse City for over 70 years. Our family still owns the Masonic Building in Downtown Traverse City where the hardware was located.

Mary Tafelsky purchased this cottage in 1948

Why Mary Tafelsky chose Traverse City

This cottage was built by our Dad when he returned from WWII. He was a young, single man then, and this lake was sparsely populated then with only a few cottages on the entire 650 acre lake. He built the cottage in the evenings after he got off work with logs and field stone from the local area. We originally owned over 900 feet of lakefront and 17 acres. Over time it was necessary to sell some of the property to reduce the cost of taxes. Today we still own 500 feet on the lake and nine acres with one of the best views on the lake. We have been renting is out as a vacation home since 1950 as well as using it for our own family. We consider it a family treasure and keep it very well maintained.

What makes this cottage unique

This is truly one of the premier views on Spider Lake.

Amazing get away! Beautiful inside & out

  • 5 of 5

We have come here for years and have watched wonderful changes to this cottage each year! We love fishing from the dock or paddling the boat to the Lilly ponds and the most recent updates include kayaks and a paddle boat! So much fun! Inside is just so beautiful and peaceful. If it is raining, we snuggle up near the fire and play cards. We have a huge extended family that comes to visit us here and everyone fits inside very nicely and the couch even goes into a great air bed, although the little ones usually like sleeping in a big pile together in the floor! Great appliances, a gas and charcoal BBQ. And so private. We are already planning our trip for next year! Thank you for sharing your beautiful place.

Outstanding, relaxing, can't wait to return

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful cabin, 2 lovely bedrooms, a picture window that overlooks the lake and the opening to the big part of the lake, open kitchen/dining/living area. Fireplace in the cabin and a chimena outside overlooking the lake. Grill, picnic table, dock and deck. At the end of a private drive. It was so very relaxing. Lots of woods to walk around and there aren't cottages on top of cottages. This part of the lake is a no wake zone so it's quiet.

I love taking my coffee down on the dock in the morning and watching the mist and fish. Fishermen just drift by and say hello. I have a ton of photos of "stuff" as I walk around and explore nature. We feed the fish bits of bread from the dock and it was fun to watch so many of these little panfish come up to enjoy our offerings. From the cottage we actually watched 2 large woodpeckers on trees less than 50 ft away for a long time. It was amazing. Lots of photos of them working away.

It's a quick trip to Traverse to do other things. (a full grocery is only a few miles away). We went to Interlochen and enjoyed some free concerts that the instructors put on.

So many options of what to do in the area! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (but leave me a week please!)

My husband and I stayed at this cabin in August 2013. Great value for the location and to all the greater Traverse City area has to offer. Furnishings were comfortable and the kitchen well equipped for a vacation cabin. Mary was very pleasant to deal with and professional rental agreement used to secure our booking. We would definitely consider staying here again the next time we plan an extended stay in the Traverse City area.
