Our Hawaii home is called Kailani, in Hawaiian Kai Means Ocean and Lani means heavenly. We named our home because of the fabulous sweeping views of the ocean from most of the rooms and the 1200 square feet lanai facing the ocean. We are lucky to have breathtaking sunsets all year round, it rarely rains on the gold coast and with grounds of over an acre the house is both private and quiet. The 1.2 acres of land on which the house sits gives you real privacy and an experience of living in Hawaii that cannot be experienced in the resort rentals.
Our home is a spacious four bedroom house with a fully equipped kitchen, dishwasher, laundry room, two en suite master a large third guest bathroom with a large shower. The house layout also is perfect for three couples, with the master suites being at either end of the house or for a family needing four bedrooms . The house is conveniently located in Kohala Estates three miles north of the small harbor town of Kawaihae and less than 35 miles north of Kona airport on the west coast of Big Island, a very easy drive north. The house is situated around 800 feet above sea level and benefits from onshore and offshore breezes that keep the house at perfect temperature range all year round; on average the sun shines 320 days a year. The breezes naturally cool the house but there are ceiling fans in bedrooms and living areas to ensure your comfort.
There are two master bedroom suites, both rooms have their own bathrooms, slider patio windows and private patio access and when you open your eyes each morning from your bed you have a wonderful view of the ocean and palm trees. The larger master bedroom has a King size bed with padded mattress, a master bathroom with a spa bath, a large separate shower and a large walk-in closet. There is also a flat screen TV and DVD. The 2nd master suite has a padded top Queen bed, a bathroom with a large shower with an ocean view. The third bedroom has a partial ocean view, palm trees and open countryside looking towards the tip of Haleakela on Maui. The third large bedroom is next door to the large family bathroom with a large walk-in shower. The 3rd bedroom has a Queen bed and a Twin bed, so the room works well for either a couple or for children. We also have a fourth study bedroom with a twin bed, so the home sleeps 8 very comfortably. Just like a hotel all the bathrooms are equipped with hairdryers.
This area is rightly called the gold coast, just a few minutes drive south are some of Big Island’s prestige hotels with beautiful beaches and facilities; all beaches in Hawaii are accessible to the public. We are approximately 10 minutes north of Hapuna Beach, one of Hawaii’s finest beaches. This area is a perfect base for your holiday with beautiful tropical beaches, water skiing, windsurfing, snorkeling, diving and kayaking all within an easy drive. There are a number of world class golf courses close by and this area is prime Humpback Whale watching territory between December and April. From the grounds you can see observatories on nearby Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano. Mauna Kea is the highest point in the Pacific Basin, and the highest island-mountain in the world; the lower slopes of Mauna Kea are popular for hunting, hiking, sightseeing and bird watching.
Kailani has been extensively refurbished and upgraded over the last year. The house is decorated in colors of the ocean and we hope you will enjoy the contemporary beach house style. The living room, separate dining area and kitchen all have direct wide ocean views, there is a full size well equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, the open plan kitchen has a breakfast bar that will easily accommodate four people. The living area has a flat screen TV if you can take your eyes off the ocean view; there is also cable TV and a library of DVDs and Wi-Fi. There are a number of Big Island guidebooks and cookery books if you need inspiration to try out some of the superb local food-or just put some fresh caught fish on the propane grill. A large 1200 square foot lanai runs along the back of the house facing the ocean so there is plenty of space for eating, entertaining, relaxing and stargazing.
There is a well equipped separate laundry room with a new Samsung front loading washing machine and dryer. Hawaii has the highest cost of electricity in the US and high water costs so if you visit our home you will see we have made every effort to keep our energy and water usage as efficient as possible.
We hope you will consider this your home -you are very welcome to use cooler chests, picnic backpacks, cooler bags, beach towels, beach chairs, beach mats etc stored in the entrance cupboard.
The house is non smoking, in common with most Hawaiian homes this is a shoe free zone so bring your flip flops, or slippers as they are called In Hawaii! We hope you find our home a clean and relaxing environment and that you will love Hawaii as much as we do. We are happy to share our local knowledge if you need help finding things, we are happy to recommend where to shop, eat, find farmer’s markets, where to sail or dance under the stars………or just stay at your Hawaiian home and enjoy another spectacular sunset.

We love the area, it's an easy drive from the airport and the climate is perfect all year round. We have wonderful clean air coutesy of the Tradewinds, access to spectacular beaches and a view of the ocean when we wake. We never tire of the ocean colors and the sunsets followed by the starshow most nights.
This house was used by workers from Japan that came to help work on a project. There was a total of 5 men staying in this house. They loved this house and it's location. When we brought them back for another project they did request this house again for there stay, unfortunately it wasn't available at the time we needed.
I stayed for three weeks in this lovely house, family came with spouses and friends, for a total of 7 people at one time, the house was spacious, airy, well maintained. I am partially disabled and access was easy, with ample parking for three cars. The view from the house is amazing, watching the ocean and the sunsets. I spent most days at the best beaches I have ever visited and we cooked in the generously sized kitchen, buying our fish just down the road. Restaurants in the area are exceptional. The management company was attentive and friendly. Towns nearby include Waimea, a good source for coffee, restaurants, farmers markets, I enjoyed the beauty of the volcanoes, took drives around the island for incredible scenery. This part of the island is very dry, so most days are clear and sunny. I would stay there again, without hesitation, and would recommend it for anyone who enjoys ocean views and the best weather in the world. Much is available through local resorts, or a short trip to Kona, including outriggers, snorkeling, fishing, swimming, zip lines and helicopter rides.
We can not say enough good about this VRBO. Besides the fact that the house is wonderful, the customer service was outstanding. They made sure that everything was perfect for us. The house is nicely laid out and offers nice privacy even if you're there with a group. The location was great for us as well. It's on the west coast, (the dry side of the island). Close enough to drive anywhere within a reasonable amount of time (you do need a car), but very private with beautiful views. Beaches are close by. Waimea is only 15 or 20 minutes. Lots of hiking and historical sights are close by also. The only draw back we found was unusually hot weather and the unit doesn't have air conditioning. We purchased a couple of fans which helped, but everyone in Hawaii said it's not usually so hot, and the trade winds were not blowing. Very unusual. The owners can't help the weather so we really have no complaints at all. We will definitely be back here without even checking anywhere else. We didn't want to leave. You won't be disappointed.
We rented this property in July 2015...The manager is friendly and accommodating and I appreciated the detailed instructions he gave us to find the home and how to "check in" since this was our first time renting a VRBO property...This is a great home for families who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the resort areas...just about a 20 minute drive up to Waimea there are some great restaurants and supermarkets. Hapuna beach is just a short drive down the road and the kids loved that...The home itself was clean and well stocked with everything we needed. Brand new washer was a plus! The area is very quiet at night and a great place to relax and unwind...we spent a lot of time outside cooking on the bbq and watching the sunset...kids had a blast playing bocce ball in the backyard! Unfortunately during our stay it was very hot with very little tradewinds to cool us off...an AC unit in the bedroom would have been awesome but during the cooler months you wouldn't need it...despite this we had a great family vacation!
I stayed at this home with my daughter for one week early August, 2015. First of all, management and staff are as friendly as they come, and they really care that you're comfortable. The house has plenty of space and gathering areas, not to mention it's better stocked than my own house!! If there's something you'd expect a house to have I bet you will find it here. As for cleanliness this house gets a 5 stars as well. Everything, from the furniture, appliances, cabinets, towels, beds, etc. was sparkling clean when we arrived. Tasteful open decoration and design will make you feel at home, and as another reviewer said, watch out, when it's time to leave, you probably won't want to!! Now, if you want to be close to urban action, large department stores, etc. this place is not for you and you'd be better off in Kona or Hilo, but if you want tranquility, disconnect, or simply have your "vacation headquarters" at a location that delivers that an more, then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone.
This is our second stay at this property and this time, although the weather was more unpredictable than last Autumn, we were equally impressed. There is a lot of room to blow off steam here. We felt as if we each had a separate wing and yet the house is comfy and not impersonal. Most of the time we spent outdoors; there are loungers as well as dining table and chairs and a bar b-que so you can enjoy the awesome vistas both day and night. It's a great location for star-gazing. The North Kohala coast tends to have hot and breezy weather and the beaches are easy to get to from here. Also, we both love the 'down home' feel of Waimea town/Kamuela and you can eat there without breaking the bank. Hawi is a lovely town too and Hilo is not such a long drive from here. So if you're looking for a mixture of r & r and exploring I would consider this is an ideal base.
The service we received from the property manager both times was thoroughly professional. The house is spotless and we have no complaints at all. I would not hesitate to recommend the property to anyone.
WHALE WATCHING: From December to early May the humpback whales call Hawaii home. Whale-watching tours let you see Hawaii’s humpbacks for yourself. The road north to Hawi (Kamuela Highway) is also a great place to pull over and watch the whales. Roughly 6,000 to 8,000 humpback whales visit Hawaii each year and current studies may increase those estimates- there may never have been a better time to come and whale watch in Hawaii.
