Our Hawaii home is called Kailani, in Hawaiian Kai Means Ocean and Lani means heavenly. We named our home because of the fabulous sweeping views of the ocean from most of the rooms and the 1200 square feet lanai facing the ocean. We are lucky to have breathtaking sunsets all year round, it rarely rains on the gold coast and with grounds of over an acre the house is both private and quiet. The 1.2 acres of land on which the house sits gives you real privacy and an experience of living in Hawaii that cannot be experienced in the resort rentals.

Our home is a spacious four bedroom house with a fully equipped kitchen, dishwasher, laundry room, two en suite master a large third guest bathroom with a large shower. The house layout also is perfect for three couples, with the master suites being at either end of the house or for a family needing four bedrooms . The house is conveniently located in Kohala Estates three miles north of the small harbor town of Kawaihae and less than 35 miles north of Kona airport on the west coast of Big Island, a very easy drive north. The house is situated around 800 feet above sea level and benefits from onshore and offshore breezes that keep the house at perfect temperature range all year round; on average the sun shines 320 days a year. The breezes naturally cool the house but there are ceiling fans in bedrooms and living areas to ensure your comfort.

There are two master bedroom suites, both rooms have their own bathrooms, slider patio windows and private patio access and when you open your eyes each morning from your bed you have a wonderful view of the ocean and palm trees. The larger master bedroom has a King size bed with padded mattress, a master bathroom with a spa bath, a large separate shower and a large walk-in closet. There is also a flat screen TV and DVD. The 2nd master suite has a padded top Queen bed, a bathroom with a large shower with an ocean view. The third bedroom has a partial ocean view, palm trees and open countryside looking towards the tip of Haleakela on Maui. The third large bedroom is next door to the large family bathroom with a large walk-in shower. The 3rd bedroom has a Queen bed and a Twin bed, so the room works well for either a couple or for children. We also have a fourth study bedroom with a twin bed, so the home sleeps 8 very comfortably. Just like a hotel all the bathrooms are equipped with hairdryers.

This area is rightly called the gold coast, just a few minutes drive south are some of Big Island’s prestige hotels with beautiful beaches and facilities; all beaches in Hawaii are accessible to the public. We are approximately 10 minutes north of Hapuna Beach, one of Hawaii’s finest beaches. This area is a perfect base for your holiday with beautiful tropical beaches, water skiing, windsurfing, snorkeling, diving and kayaking all within an easy drive. There are a number of world class golf courses close by and this area is prime Humpback Whale watching territory between December and April. From the grounds you can see observatories on nearby Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano. Mauna Kea is the highest point in the Pacific Basin, and the highest island-mountain in the world; the lower slopes of Mauna Kea are popular for hunting, hiking, sightseeing and bird watching.

Kailani has been extensively refurbished and upgraded over the last year. The house is decorated in colors of the ocean and we hope you will enjoy the contemporary beach house style. The living room, separate dining area and kitchen all have direct wide ocean views, there is a full size well equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, the open plan kitchen has a breakfast bar that will easily accommodate four people. The living area has a flat screen TV if you can take your eyes off the ocean view; there is also cable TV and a library of DVDs and Wi-Fi. There are a number of Big Island guidebooks and cookery books if you need inspiration to try out some of the superb local food-or just put some fresh caught fish on the propane grill. A large 1200 square foot lanai runs along the back of the house facing the ocean so there is plenty of space for eating, entertaining, relaxing and stargazing.

There is a well equipped separate laundry room with a new Samsung front loading washing machine and dryer. Hawaii has the highest cost of electricity in the US and high water costs so if you visit our home you will see we have made every effort to keep our energy and water usage as efficient as possible.

We hope you will consider this your home -you are very welcome to use cooler chests, picnic backpacks, cooler bags, beach towels, beach chairs, beach mats etc stored in the entrance cupboard.

The house is non smoking, in common with most Hawaiian homes this is a shoe free zone so bring your flip flops, or slippers as they are called In Hawaii! We hope you find our home a clean and relaxing environment and that you will love Hawaii as much as we do. We are happy to share our local knowledge if you need help finding things, we are happy to recommend where to shop, eat, find farmer’s markets, where to sail or dance under the stars………or just stay at your Hawaiian home and enjoy another spectacular sunset.

Endless Ocean Views!

As a frequent visitor to the Big Island and the Kohala Coast, I came across this house as the other properties I have rented were booked during my dates. I am happy they were booked as this house was truly amazing and hands down the best value in Kohala!

The house is extremely well equipped - everything and anything you may need in the kitchen, modern bathrooms with plenty of new towels, bedrooms (we just used the 2 larger bedrooms) were great with nice linens, comfortable beds and plenty of closet space.

The house features amazing ocean views from almost every room.

The house is just up the road from some amazing restaurants and other retail shops - Café Pesto, Kohala Burger and Taco, Shaved Ice and Ice Cream, Gas and Convenience station, Seafood Bar, Kohala Dive Shop and charters, Fresh Fish store with local catch for the day to grill at home and more - truly a great location.

The manager, Michael, was extremely responsive with booking and checked in on the day I was leaving to see how everything was.

Another great stay and truly a great find with an amazing house and great management!

Perfect relaxation spot for a group

The property is beautiful all the way around. The home is lovely, very clean with many convenient features for the traveler. Very thoughtful. The lanai/patio area is stellar and is an awesome place to watch the sunset. Very quiet neighborhood but still close to great areas to visit on the Big Island. Hopefully we can return someday.

Great house and location

We had a wonderful stay at this house. It is beautifully laid out and furnished; if anything, the photos don't do it justice. The kitchen was very well stocked and the rooms were all spacious and comfortable. It was very clean as well. The beach closet was great-- there were chairs, towels, and a cooler that made our trips to the beach each day possible.

The manager and owners were very responsive and helpful. Just before we arrived, there was a problem with Internet access and the owners quickly came to the house to fix it. This was great, as we got a chance to meet them in person and get some dining tips. There were a few other maintenance issues having to do with a bathroom and the TV, and the manager was very responsive in fixing them right away.

In addition to the house being so comfortable and clean, the location was outstanding. We loved being north of the main Kona resort area and away from the other tourists. We ate several times in Kawaihae-- try Kohala Burger & Taco and the shaved ice place on the west side of Hwy 270 just past the harbor, and the Fish Wagon and Fish Market across the street from the burger place.

Wonderful place-- would love to return!

We do our best to make sure that the house is neat, organized and tidy and truly appreciate those guests who treat it as if it was their own home. Our experienced Property Manager is a locally born Hawaiian and is immensely knowledgeable about the island. We fell in love with Kailani when we first saw it, and set about making it a contemporary beach house that is also comfortable. We continue to try to make things more comfortable and easy for our visitors, from the furnishings and fittings to the information packages. We appreciate guests letting us know if there is anything out of order or that does not meet their needs, and we do our best to accommodate their feedback and to make their stay as pleasurable as possible. We hope to see all our guests return to enjoy a few more amazing sunsets. Thanks to all our guests for taking time to write reviews and share experiences.

When can we go back?

From the booking process right through to the moment we walked into this beautiful house, and throughout our stay everything went smoothly and communication was brilliant. The house is lovely with everything you need for a relaxing holiday, the furnishings and décor are very comfortable and of high quality. One of our favourite memories now we are home to a rather cold Britain is of lying in bed with the curtains open (its totally private) each morning listening to the birds and watching the palm trees, absolute heaven! The peace and quiet, with the amazing views are gorgeous. Our only problem was due to the very unusual rainfall that the island incurred during December, there were some mosquitos early morning and at dusk, its a tropical country so bugs are to be expected. Take some repellent with Deet, and we used coils on the lanai which helped. There are screens on all of the windows which allow the house to be cool and airy. We would highly recommend this property and would love to return again in the future.

Best value on Kohala Coast!

We live on the island and were in need of extra space for family and friends visiting. I came across this lovely property and had a seamless experience with the property manager who answered questions promptly and informatively. The home itself is modern, spotless and very comfortable, and the views are amazing. Because the group primarily came to our home for visiting and eating, they didn't make much use of the kitchen facilities but it is very well equipped with everything you need to make you feel at home. The property is exactly as represented in the pictures, which isn't always the case. Without a doubt this will be the "go to" property to house friends and family in the future. Thanks to Michael for being available as needed and the great communication!

Great Place

This house was used by workers from Japan that came to help work on a project. There was a total of 5 men staying in this house. They loved this house and it's location. When we brought them back for another project they did request this house again for there stay, unfortunately it wasn't available at the time we needed.

WHALE WATCHING: From December to early May the humpback whales call Hawaii home. Whale-watching tours let you see Hawaii’s humpbacks for yourself. The road north to Hawi (Kamuela Highway) is also a great place to pull over and watch the whales. Roughly 6,000 to 8,000 humpback whales visit Hawaii each year and current studies may increase those estimates- there may never have been a better time to come and whale watch in Hawaii.
