About the property

Relax in a hitoric country home in Prince Edward County's beach/ wine district.

The Gryphon, a Regency Cottage, is a completely restored historic home nestled into a large garden and natural wildlife preserve. Regency cottages were situated to take advantage of the vistas and gardens belonging to the estate. Each window looks out over a field of wildflowers, a formal garden, a rural farmland, or Lake Consecon. Twelve foot ceilings and antique furniture add to the feeling of old time charm.

Prince Edward County is a mecca for artists, nature lovers and anyone looking for a getaway … for a weekend break or for life.

Renowned for its sailing, fishing and giant sand dunes, The County also offers live theatre, artists studios and galleries, unique regional cuisine and a flourishing wine region.

The perfect place for a getaway – a day trip from Toronto or Ottawa.

About Shannon Kyles

I am an architectural historian, professor of architecture, webmistress for, and CBC columnist on historic architecture. I rebuilt this house because it is so lovely and I am concerned that our built heritage is being destroyed. This house was part of the Underground Railway as well as being used a a feed store, a hospital and a private home.

Shannon Kyles purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Shannon Kyles chose Consecon

In June there are dozens or turtles that lay their eggs on the lawn and around the rees and hedges. The pond is full of frogs, toads and dragonflies. There are red winged blackbirds, herons, hummingbirds, and orioles in the nearby trees. The house has the large, generous proportions of a by-gone age. The windows are all original as are the doors, trim and baseboards. The house is stunning, and so is the location.

What makes this cottage unique

You can cycle to The Grange, Closson Chase, Normand Hardy, Stanner, and many other local wineries. By car these wineries are ten minutes away. The property runs along the edge of the Millennium Trail, which is a 60 kilometer rail trail perfect for cycling and nature walks. Lake Consecon is about 8 kilometers long. The road around the lake is almost 20 kilometres, perfect for a short cycle.

Beautiful vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Gryphon over the Christmas holidays with our family and had a truly memorable experience. The house is in a great location and sits on a beautiful property. There were 7 of us and had more than enough room for both our families. The beds were super comfortable and the house had all amenities we could have asked for. The theatre room was a big plus to be able to hang out, watch movies and play games. The period decorations and details in the home make it a special place - but especially love all the updated bathrooms and the master bedroom and bath are gorgeous! I look forward to visiting the Gryphon in the spring or summer this year to experience the property without all the snow!! Shannon is a great host and appreciate her attention to details and her responsiveness when we needed to contact her.

Relaxing and lovely

  • 5 of 5

I have known the proprietress Shannon for more than 15 years and she never ceases to surprise and impress. She has transported and rebuilt a beautiful historic house. We stayed in the South Apartment, complete with a sitting area facing the lake and a small library. Private and quiet enough for our 2 yr. old to sleep while we enjoyed the company of the other guests upstairs in the parlour in front of a crackling fire. Dinner was served in the dining area next to the hearth. The house has soaring ceilings and large windows with expansive views. A stone’s throw from the beaches and wineries. A historic home with modern comforts. A hostess with intimate knowledge of the architecture of the home and the environs. We look forward to returning.

We were a group of women who wanted a place with comfortable beds and kitchen were we could cook together and most importantly communal space to visit, this home had it all and did it style!

There are no doubt tons of interesting things to do in the area but we just throughly enjoyed the house it was perfect for a large group and would be wonderful for three or four couples or even families.

Beautiful house, great area, kind host

  • 5 of 5

We just had a wonderful stay at the Gryphon cottage. The house is extremely well laid-out and every single room oozes charm and possesses it's own unique character. Truly one-of-a-kind. The house is highly practical too - all bedrooms have en suite bathrooms, and the kitchen is extremely well stocked.

The location is great for exploring Prince Edward County and the nearby parks and beaches. There is ample space on the property to explore and take in all the nature around you.

The house owner is kind, ensures that the space is very clean upon arrival, and is full of useful tips about the area.

All in all, we made a great decision to rent the Gryphon and will surely be back!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind words, and I am glad that you had such excellent weather. The County is such a beautiful spot all year, but especially nice once the butterfly bushes are in bloom and there are so many bits of flying colour around. I spotted five Monarchs on the dark purple buddleia today. I'll look forward to seeing you next year. Shannon
