About the property

Relax in a hitoric country home in Prince Edward County's beach/ wine district.

The Gryphon, a Regency Cottage, is a completely restored historic home nestled into a large garden and natural wildlife preserve. Regency cottages were situated to take advantage of the vistas and gardens belonging to the estate. Each window looks out over a field of wildflowers, a formal garden, a rural farmland, or Lake Consecon. Twelve foot ceilings and antique furniture add to the feeling of old time charm.

Prince Edward County is a mecca for artists, nature lovers and anyone looking for a getaway … for a weekend break or for life.

Renowned for its sailing, fishing and giant sand dunes, The County also offers live theatre, artists studios and galleries, unique regional cuisine and a flourishing wine region.

The perfect place for a getaway – a day trip from Toronto or Ottawa.

About Shannon Kyles

I am an architectural historian, professor of architecture, webmistress for ontarioarchitecture.com, and CBC columnist on historic architecture. I rebuilt this house because it is so lovely and I am concerned that our built heritage is being destroyed. This house was part of the Underground Railway as well as being used a a feed store, a hospital and a private home.

Shannon Kyles purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Shannon Kyles chose Ontario

In June there are dozens or turtles that lay their eggs on the lawn and around the rees and hedges. The pond is full of frogs, toads and dragonflies. There are red winged blackbirds, herons, hummingbirds, and orioles in the nearby trees. The house has the large, generous proportions of a by-gone age. The windows are all original as are the doors, trim and baseboards. The house is stunning, and so is the location.

What makes this cottage unique

You can cycle to The Grange, Closson Chase, Normand Hardy, Stanner, and many other local wineries. By car these wineries are ten minutes away. The property runs along the edge of the Millennium Trail, which is a 60 kilometer rail trail perfect for cycling and nature walks. Lake Consecon is about 8 kilometers long. The road around the lake is almost 20 kilometres, perfect for a short cycle.

A little bit of heaven in Prince Edward County

  • 5 of 5

Pictures do not do this amazing home justice. Shannon the home owner has restored this home to all its glory yet ensuring that all modern conveniences are provided to ensure your stay is pleasurable. All the details of comfort were provided to us as we relaxed in this beautiful restored historic home with each unique bedroom housing an attached ensuite. Our ensuite had a huge shower and a separate cast iron tub which kept the hot water hot long enough to enjoy a full chapter in my novel.

This house is great to host a family reunion or for you and 4 other couples to get away and have your stress just melt away. We were so close to Provincial park that we enjoyed a beautiful walk in the sand dunes in the morning right after breakfast and at night were able to go to town for an amazing dinner. The location is also a short drive to multiple wineries and amazing restaurants. Be sure to book ahead of time as even in the cool spring restaurants were very busy.

The Gryphon also enjoys an amazing media room which is great as you wind down your day to relax. The room provides many options to lounge or even lay down with cozy blankets to wrap around while you enjoy either a movie or your favourite TV series. Shannon also has just renovated the downstair bedroom and has added a kitchenette and will be bonus to anyone who would like additional privacy.

I can't wait until I visit Gryphon Cottage again and you can rest assured my husband and I will be repeat guests in this fabulous spot in Prince Edward County.

Beatiful historic home great for families, friends and County day trips.

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at Shannon's home twice and plan to stay again. It is a beautiful home, with many heritage features and all the modern conveniences. Highlights are the large kitchen, big dining table with banquette, beautiful bedrooms with en suite baths, and the basement media room with large projection screen. The large yard offers ample area for kids to play, with the chance to see frogs and turtles if you are lucky. The house is a short drive from Wellington and a great base from which to explore wineries, Sandbanks and all Prince Edward County has to offer.

Fantastic and unique BnB - a joy to stay in such a wonderful property.

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful BnB. It was a joy to stay in such a lovingly restored home as part of our holiday to Canada. It is clear that the owner, Shannon, has an eye for detail and has made an excellent job of both the restoration, the internal décor and choice of period furniture.

The property was spotlessly clean and well maintained and Shannon was able to provide advice on where to explore which was most helpful.

We will certainly be recommending the Gryphon to friends and family who may be looking to visit this part of Canada and hopefully we will stay there again as I expect we will be back to Prince Edward County in the future.

A very special place

  • 5 of 5

Both the house and location make for a truly special holiday. We sat on the terrace and watched the humming birds come to and fro and after a few days we all felt we'd relaxed into a slower pace of life.

By lunchtime we were off to the vineyards to enjoy a wood fired pizza and a glass of wine. In the evenings we all gathered in the downstairs cinema room to enjoy a film together.

Very reluctantly we left to go home.

Shannon was great. She responded really quickly to all our enquiries.

Perfect quiet location to visit all of PEC.

  • 5 of 5

We had a terrific time at The Gryphon Bed and Breakfast. We have been going to Prince Edward County for 6 years, and we can truly say that this is a great place to stay, relax, meet fun people, and it is a very accessible spot for touring around the whole county.

Shannon is a great host. We corresponded easily over email prior to the trip, it was no problem to accommodate our dairy free diet into her cooking, and she had great suggestions for downtime activities.

The building is certainly an addition to the experience, the heritage restoration and the details were beautiful (check out the beautiful windows in the kitchen!). We stayed in the Phenoix room and had a peaceful sleep, and a nice private bathroom.

Overall it was great, and I would certainly reccomend. And if you get the chance, breakfast on the expansive portch is a great way to start the day.
