Named after Rodrigo's grandmother, a beautiful Puerto Rican woman known for her rich, flowing hair, as well as the pistol she packed in her purse, Villa Delfina takes its inspiration from a simpler, romantic era in Puerto Rico. Like its namesake, Villa Delfina is defined by a refined, rare elegance, but provides many surprises around every corner.
When we first encountered this villa, it had been long neglected for many years, but we loved its bones and soon became enchanted by its quiet, romantic garden view, one that all visitors have characterized as quintessentially Puerto Rican. As we are architectural purists, we have restored it within the framework of the original architectural vision of Rio Mar, and have updated all systems and appliances in a way that discerning guests expect. It is now a handsome home where one can imagine hosting both a sumptuous cocktail party or a group of friends and family who have just returned from the beach ready to kick back and watch a movie as the catch of the day grills on the outdoor barbecue.
Villa Delfina is best suited for families of four or two discerning couples looking for a rare taste of Puerto Rico at its finest. One bedroom downstairs has a queen bed and ensuite bath, and one bedroom upstairs has a king bed and also has an ensuite bath. As with all of our Villas in Rio Mar, the kitchen is appointed with highest quality cookware, and all bedding features high thread count cotton linens. The villa is cooled naturally by Puerto Rico's tradewinds; all rooms have ceiling fans and the bedrooms are outfitted with A/Cs. High speed wifi and cable are also included.
VILLA DELFINA IS PART OF THE COLLECTION AT RIO MAR.

Professionals in the design and beauty industries, Rodrigo and Elliott spend their time between New York City and Rio Mar.
Rodrigo and Elliott purchased this villa in 2014
Historically the second home community of Puerto Rican families, Rio Mar has always been known across the island as an exclusive retreat for Puerto Rican professionals that resorts built later have tried to replicate. The architecture of the villas across the property conforms to the rolling shape of the hills, making each villa unique and the grounds feel organic. A native of Puerto Rico, Rodrigo spent his teenage years at Rio Mar, and dreamed of owning a property here while growing up. Living in New York City crystallized the need to have a retreat to relax and recharge. At Rio Mar, we've found the perfect villa to do just that.
After attempting to post his review of his two week stay with his wife at Villa Delfina, and receiving an error message from the Homeaway website on both attempts, our guest Michael B. sent us the following review via email. A special thank you to Michael for taking the time to write this review 3 times.
REVIEW SUBMITTED BY MICHAEL B:
The chilled wine and gentle music that greeted our arrival at Villa Delfina set the tone for our stay there. It is ‘High End’ from the features and fittings (just love those elegant chandeliers), to the most comfortable beds, the fluffy white towels, the décor (we loved Don Quixote, too)….we could go on, but suffice it to say that the Villa’s features made for a most amenable stay . We have not visited Puerto Rico before, so there were lots of trips out-and-about; and how nice it was to return to the comforts of the Villa. Had we wanted a more ‘chilled out’ holiday, all the elements are there in Rio Mar Cluster 2. The impressive private pool, which we had almost to ourselves, the private beach with its own private, adjacent pool ….and if you’re feeling energetic it’s a stroll along the beach to the Wyndham hotel with its pool bar – and, of course, rum and coke! We can’t comment sensibly on eating-out as we’re foodies who love cooking, so we ate in or BBQ’d for most of the time; the Villa’s kitchen is well equipped and had everything we needed – not least a corkscrew! How nice to enjoy a BBQ on the balcony overlooking the adjacent gardens. (The whole of the Rio Mar real estate with its gardens is a well-manicured delight). Coming from UK there were lots of new and attractive recipe ingredients at Ralph’s supermarket (about 15 minute’s drive away along Route 3) and if you run out of anything there’s a mini-market at the bottom of the hill. It’s all so convenient.
So, a really special holiday for us, but this review would not be complete without mention of Lydia who manages Villa Delfina for Elliott and Rodrigo. She is both efficient and charming, and nothing was too much trouble to make our holiday the success that it was. Thank you Lydia; thank you Elliott and Rodrigo.
Our vacation was spoiled a bit by bad weather, something that is very unusual in early March. But Villa Delfina was a very comfortable place to stay (and to read in when it was raining outside). The only small complaint is that the water pressure is weak. It pulses rather than flows, making showers somewhat difficult. Otherwise, though, a great vacation spot--if there's no rain!
Elliot and Rodrigo's place is fantastic. Our family of four (two adults, and two kids), spent a week just relaxing and having fun. The villa was clean (spotless!), comfortable, beautifully decorated, and wonderfully appointed. The beds were super comfortable and had high quality bedding. I would choose this villa any day over a hotel. Communication with Elliot was seamless. He responded to my questions immediately, and made sure we had everything we needed. The champagne that was dropped off for us on New Years Eve was over the top - Thank you Elliot and Rodrigo!!
First off the beds are AMAZING!! My family and I had the absolute best time staying at the Villa! We had just finished a road trip all around PR and decided to spend our last days in a beautiful, calm, and chill environment. The property is absolutely gorgeous and so close to surfing, hiking, beach, and wonderful restaurants. We also were traveling with our 4 month old so having the pool at our door steps was wonderful. People had mentioned to is to be careful about Zica and I'll be honest there wasn't one time I felt nervous. I was just mindful of using bug spray like I normally would. We have been coming to PR for years and we always stay in one of the Padilla/Trice villas. I know I'll feel right at home and it's definitely luxury for an affordable price! Would recommend to anyone traveling to PR.
We just got back from a week long stay at Villa Delfina. The villa looks exactly like the pictures online: Beautiful! Elliot and Rodrigo have great taste! Nothing cheap or shoddy. High end all the way! We had a few glitches and Lydia was SUPER responsive. Wine was chilling in the fridge and jazz music was playing when we arrived!!! A few staples were provided (mangoes, oranges, coffee) to get us started before we could make it to the market. I recommend SELECTIOS Supermarket just a few blocks West on Route 3 behind the KFC and Burger King. There is a Walgreens in that shopping center also. We also went to Ralphs and Super Wal-Mart a bit further west on Route 3. We had a rental car (which I highly recommend). The area is relatively easy to navigate.
The pool in cluster 2, a few steps from the villa, was lovely, as were the facilities at the private beach club. This villa is located on the property of the Wyndham Rio Mar. You can drive over to the Wyndham (but have to pay to park there) and use the casino, restaurants, beach (just not the pool). We rented jet skies one day on the beach just outside the Wyndham. The waves are a bit rough here, but if you go to Luquillo Beach the water is very calm (although Luquillo Beach is very crowded on the weekends). The road to the El Yunque Rainforest is directly across the street at the light on Route 3 where you turn to go to the Wyndham property/villas. Once you cross the street the road curves to the right. There is a FANTASTIC Bakery on your right (Puerto Rican Bakery). They serve hot meals, sandwiches, pastries, etc. The daily special on the weekend is super cheap and tasty. The food was cheap and delish! We went there at least 3-4 times. A little past the bakery are two neat little gift shops off the beaten path.
Having a car made it easy to travel into San Juan on the highway (66). A day in old San Juan is a must!
Overall, we loved the villa and location. We have a few recommendations for the hosts:
1. Since there is no A/C in the living room (A/C in the bedrooms work very well) and the front and back doors are entirely made of glass, we thought it might be good to have curtains on the front and back doors that can be drawn shut for privacy and to block the sun in the afternoon.
2. While you do have all of the appliances needed to cook (pots, pans, BBQ) , there is no microwave. It would have been great to have a small counter microwave to re-heat leftovers.
Our family of 4 (kids 12, 14) spent a week at the Villa Delfina. It was a fantastic vacation in large part thanks to this wonderful villa, the location, and the suggestions and help from Elliott and Lydia. Rio Mar was the perfect base for us - close to the beach, easy access to El Yunque, Luquillo/surfing, Fajardo, OSJ, etc. There were many great dining options within easy driving distance.
The Villa itself was absolutely wonderful. It looks just like the pictures- beautifully restored, retaining the character of the villa. It's nestled into a small cluster of villas. Parking is easy. The area was quiet during our stay, but not deserted feeling. The villa is very comfortable, clean, stylish, with plenty of space for the 4 of us. As others have said - the furnishings, towels, toiletries, cooking utensils are all of great quality. What the pictures can't capture is the wonderful breeze that blows through the villa, the sound of the coquis at night, the pleasure of having morning coffee and an evening glass of wine on the balcony looking out over the treetops. We fit in lots of activities - but it was a vacation just being at the villa!
Elliott was very responsive and helpful in answering my many questions before we rented. His instructions and suggestions for activities, restaurants were great. We tried and enjoyed a number of the restaurants. (Our whole family enthusiastically seconds L'Estacion in Fajardo. We returned there our last night - great atmosphere & food!). Lydia (house mgr) was available during our stay, and accommodating of our late night arrival. The villa was ready for us with chilled wine, coffee, fruit and great music playing. The guards were all welcoming. We have rented quite a few times through VRBO/HomeAway - but this is the first property to which all 4 of us agreed we would be happy to return year after year!
(From our 12-yo who wanted an opportunity to review!)
"From a child's point of view I enjoyed this Villa very much. I am obsessed with making sure things are clean, and this Villa met my standards. It was kept in pristine condition with decoration, but not too much so that you couldn't make it your own. It was very close to the clusters pool so you could easily walk to it. Something I especially enjoyed were the paw prints in several of the the tiles in the villa. If you are looking for a place that is kid friendly but sophisticated, this is the place to rent!"
We had a lovely holiday based in Villa Delray, Puerto Rico. We were impressed by the villa's causal vibe, well stocked kitchen and quality linens and towels. The unit was clean and welcoming. The crosswinds provided constant breeze so we never activated the air conditioner. The outdoor patio off the living room offered protected afternoon sun. We were steps from the cluster 2 pool (not very clean) and ten minutes walk to a beautiful beach and beach pool (wonderful).
We were disappointed that we were not well directed to nearby restaurants and grocery facilities. The beauty of renting a condo is the ability to stock your own kitchen and the stores in this area were at least 25 minutes drive away and the quality and selection of produce was disappointing. We ate at the hotel twice and both meals were expensive and mediocre. We visited Richie's on the hill, and while the view was beautiful, the food again disappointing. We played golf and tennis through the resort and we enjoyed the experience. We visited the Bio Bay in Fajardo and though the glow was low, the kayaking through the mangrove swamp was an adventure. The best visit during our stay was to the Yunque Rainforest just 15 minutes away from the villa. It was a spectacular display of tropical plants with well laid out trails and vistas.
The villa is located in Cluster II of the Rio Mar Resort. On the Rio Mar property guests have access to the cluster's private pool and to the private Rio Mar Residents' Beach Club, which also has a large pool, beach chairs for your relaxation and food and drinks on the weekends. Two award winning golf courses (Ocean and River), as well as an extensive tennis center featuring Har-Tru courts are available for sports enthusiasts. The Wyndham Rio Mar resort on the property also features a wide variety of restaurants and a casino.
The villa's location makes it a great launching point to see the sites outside of the property as well. El Yunque Rainforest is a five minute drive away, Old San Juan is only about 40 minutes away. Laguna Grande, one of only five bioluminescent bays in the entire world, is nearby for an evening excursion, the beautiful islands of Culebra and Vieques are easy day trips as well. (See map above for location of the villa and locations of these places.)
