Named after Rodrigo's grandmother, a beautiful Puerto Rican woman known for her rich, flowing hair, as well as the pistol she packed in her purse, Villa Delfina takes its inspiration from a simpler, romantic era in Puerto Rico. Like its namesake, Villa Delfina is defined by a refined, rare elegance, but provides many surprises around every corner.
When we first encountered this villa, it had been long neglected for many years, but we loved its bones and soon became enchanted by its quiet, romantic garden view, one that all visitors have characterized as quintessentially Puerto Rican. As we are architectural purists, we have restored it within the framework of the original architectural vision of Rio Mar, and have updated all systems and appliances in a way that discerning guests expect. It is now a handsome home where one can imagine hosting both a sumptuous cocktail party or a group of friends and family who have just returned from the beach ready to kick back and watch a movie as the catch of the day grills on the outdoor barbecue.
Villa Delfina is best suited for families of four or two discerning couples looking for a rare taste of Puerto Rico at its finest. One bedroom downstairs has a queen bed and ensuite bath, and one bedroom upstairs has a king bed and also has an ensuite bath. As with all of our Villas in Rio Mar, the kitchen is appointed with highest quality cookware, and all bedding features high thread count cotton linens. The villa is cooled naturally by Puerto Rico's tradewinds; all rooms have ceiling fans and the bedrooms are outfitted with A/Cs. High speed wifi and cable are also included.

Professionals in the design and beauty industries, Rodrigo and Elliott spend their time between New York City and Rio Mar.
Rodrigo and Elliott purchased this villa in 2014
Historically the second home community of Puerto Rican families, Rio Mar has always been known across the island as an exclusive retreat for Puerto Rican professionals that resorts built later have tried to replicate. The architecture of the villas across the property conforms to the rolling shape of the hills, making each villa unique and the grounds feel organic. A native of Puerto Rico, Rodrigo spent his teenage years at Rio Mar, and dreamed of owning a property here while growing up. Living in New York City crystallized the need to have a retreat to relax and recharge. At Rio Mar, we've found the perfect villa to do just that.
After attempting to post his review of his two week stay with his wife at Villa Delfina, and receiving an error message from the Homeaway website on both attempts, our guest Michael B. sent us the following review via email. A special thank you to Michael for taking the time to write this review 3 times.
REVIEW SUBMITTED BY MICHAEL B:
The chilled wine and gentle music that greeted our arrival at Villa Delfina set the tone for our stay there. It is ‘High End’ from the features and fittings (just love those elegant chandeliers), to the most comfortable beds, the fluffy white towels, the décor (we loved Don Quixote, too)….we could go on, but suffice it to say that the Villa’s features made for a most amenable stay . We have not visited Puerto Rico before, so there were lots of trips out-and-about; and how nice it was to return to the comforts of the Villa. Had we wanted a more ‘chilled out’ holiday, all the elements are there in Rio Mar Cluster 2. The impressive private pool, which we had almost to ourselves, the private beach with its own private, adjacent pool ….and if you’re feeling energetic it’s a stroll along the beach to the Wyndham hotel with its pool bar – and, of course, rum and coke! We can’t comment sensibly on eating-out as we’re foodies who love cooking, so we ate in or BBQ’d for most of the time; the Villa’s kitchen is well equipped and had everything we needed – not least a corkscrew! How nice to enjoy a BBQ on the balcony overlooking the adjacent gardens. (The whole of the Rio Mar real estate with its gardens is a well-manicured delight). Coming from UK there were lots of new and attractive recipe ingredients at Ralph’s supermarket (about 15 minute’s drive away along Route 3) and if you run out of anything there’s a mini-market at the bottom of the hill. It’s all so convenient.
So, a really special holiday for us, but this review would not be complete without mention of Lydia who manages Villa Delfina for Elliott and Rodrigo. She is both efficient and charming, and nothing was too much trouble to make our holiday the success that it was. Thank you Lydia; thank you Elliott and Rodrigo.
There isn't much to add to what's already been said other than to confirm that it's all true. This is an extremely clean and well-appointed villa that sits on a golf course near a pool and within walking distance to a private beach club. The villa has two floors, which allowed my wife and I some privacy from our two teenage sons (and them some privacy from us); a terrific deck on which to grill, have coffee and pre-dinner drinks, and to watch the birds in the surrounding palm trees and the occasional iguana in the field below (one was at least five feet long, from head to tip of tail, no joke); brand new All-Clad cookware; and extremely comfortable beds and linens. Everything was exactly as advertised.
But what made this experience even easier was the customer service provided by Elliott and Rodrigo and by their property manager, Lydia. Elliott and Rodrigo were quick to respond right from the first inquiry and continued through my numerous follow-ups (showing a fair degree of patience, as well). They gave quick, detailed responses, and provided a ton of information about the area (where to shop, where to eat, what to do, etc.). Lydia met us at the villa and helped us settle in and was extremely accommodating in allowing us to get in early on check-in day and leave late on check-out.
As for the vacation itself, we went at an interesting time because the first half of the vacation was during the long Easter weekend, which, we were told, was one of the busiest of the year. The place was packed with families and groups of friends celebrating the holiday at their vacation homes. It was loud and crowded, but, honestly, not in a spring-break-in-Florida kind of way. It was lively and festive and fun. It was loud at night, but, again, it wasn't college students binge drinking late into the night. It was more joyous and wholesome than that. (It's hard to describe, but hopefully you get what I mean.) After Easter, the place completely cleared out and we had the pool and beach almost literally to ourselves.
We ended up doing little outside of the resort other than going up to the rainforest, which was very cool. We'd been locked inside a long New England winter for five months and just wanted to spend as much time at the pool and beach as possible.
We had a terrific experience and whole-heartedly recommend this villa to anyone considering vacationing at Rio Mar.
My husband, three children (ages 11, 6, and 3), and I all had a wonderful stay at Villa Delfina. This was our second time staying at one of Elliott and Rodrigo's properties and it was just as memorable and lovely as our last stay. The home is so beautifully decorated but is also extremely comfortable. The bedroom beds are extremely comfortable, the kitchen is well appointed with very nice accessories, and the porch is the perfect spot to enjoy your morning coffee. We enjoyed many delicious family meals at the beautiful table and we were all very comfortable and happy at Delfina for 7 days. Our eleven year old, six year old, and three year old all give the Villa and Puerto Rico a thumbs up. They LOVED the pool and called it their "private" pool because we almost always had it to ourselves which was wonderful! The hot tub was really great and the pool is absolutely gorgeous. We loved returning to the pool after our morning and afternoon outings and spent hours there.
We rented a golf cart this time around and it was awesome! Lydia was great and handled anything we needed - we rented our golf cart through her. It was a really nice one and we loved driving it all around the Rio Mar property and down to the Wyndham, as well as to the beach and the additional Rio Mar pool on he beach.
Since this was our second time in PR we knew some more about where to go and what to do around Rio Grande, San Juan, and the other surrounding areas. But our favorite thing (all 5 of us would agree), was to come home to our lovely villa Delfina and our pool and relax in the warm Puerto Rican sun with our gorgeous rainforest views. We did get to do some cool activities like horseback ride (nearby Carabali Rainforest Park) and we went zip lining (Ecoquest near San Juan). We also loved Luquillo beach and hiked to the beautiful Hidden beach at Seven Seas in Fajardo. There is so much to do in Puerto Rico!
We loved Puerto Rico, the food, the people, the beach, the ocean, but especially where we stayed! We will definitely come back for a third time and would highly recommend Villa Delfina to anyone! Thanks Elliott and Rodrigo!
We just returned from a 7 day stay at Villa Delfina. This was our first trip to Puerto Rico and I fell in love with it. There was so much charm to Puerto Rico. The villa was perfect for our family of four (kids age 9 and 12). It was such a beautiful space to relax (the art work, tiles, chandeliers, etc). You will sleep well in these beds. The parents' favorite: the deck (cup of coffee in the morning, glass of wine at night). The kids' favorite: the pool and jumping waves at the beach. The beach at Rio Mar had ample parking and tons of beach chairs. We also enjoyed La Pared beach in Luquillo (short drive). We swam in the pool/hot tub in Cluster 2 daily (including night swimming, a big hit). This pool was only a 1-2 minute walk from our villa. Rodrigo and Elliott are the MOST organized owners of any place we have ever rented from on VRBO. Take time to read their suggestions (I think it really influenced how we experienced this destination for the first time). We rented a car for the week and found this villa to be in a great location. Our favorite outings: 2 hour horseback ride at Carabali Rainforest Park, bio bay tour on Vieques, surfing lesson with Surfing Puerto Rico, Culebra snorkeling tour with East Island Excursions, and tour with Spoon Food Tours in Old San Juan. But the absolute highlight was El Yunque (so close to villa, we loved it so much we went back a 2nd day in a row, go do the rope swing on Angelito trail). Since we were so close to El Yunque, we were able to hike in the morning before crowds/tour buses arrived. We ate most breakfasts and lunches at the villa (after shopping at Costco and Ralph's). Favorites for dinner were Don Pepe's, Boardriders, La Parilla, Carabali Bar and Grill, and Pasta Y Pueblo (thanks to their suggestions we never had a bad meal).
Thanks to Rodrigo and Elliott for sharing this beautiful home with us, it was a wonderful family vacation. We hope to come back here for future vacations. And thank you to Lydia, you are a sweet lady and we appreciated your prompt responses by text.
Our vacation was spoiled a bit by bad weather, something that is very unusual in early March. But Villa Delfina was a very comfortable place to stay (and to read in when it was raining outside). The only small complaint is that the water pressure is weak. It pulses rather than flows, making showers somewhat difficult. Otherwise, though, a great vacation spot--if there's no rain!
Elliot and Rodrigo's place is fantastic. Our family of four (two adults, and two kids), spent a week just relaxing and having fun. The villa was clean (spotless!), comfortable, beautifully decorated, and wonderfully appointed. The beds were super comfortable and had high quality bedding. I would choose this villa any day over a hotel. Communication with Elliot was seamless. He responded to my questions immediately, and made sure we had everything we needed. The champagne that was dropped off for us on New Years Eve was over the top - Thank you Elliot and Rodrigo!!
First off the beds are AMAZING!! My family and I had the absolute best time staying at the Villa! We had just finished a road trip all around PR and decided to spend our last days in a beautiful, calm, and chill environment. The property is absolutely gorgeous and so close to surfing, hiking, beach, and wonderful restaurants. We also were traveling with our 4 month old so having the pool at our door steps was wonderful. People had mentioned to is to be careful about Zica and I'll be honest there wasn't one time I felt nervous. I was just mindful of using bug spray like I normally would. We have been coming to PR for years and we always stay in one of the Padilla/Trice villas. I know I'll feel right at home and it's definitely luxury for an affordable price! Would recommend to anyone traveling to PR.
The villa is located in Cluster II of the Rio Mar Resort. On the Rio Mar property guests have access to the cluster's private pool and to the private Rio Mar Residents' Beach Club, which also has a large pool, beach chairs for your relaxation and food and drinks on the weekends. Two award winning golf courses (Ocean and River), as well as an extensive tennis center featuring Har-Tru courts are available for sports enthusiasts. The Wyndham Rio Mar resort on the property also features a wide variety of restaurants and a casino.
The villa's location makes it a great launching point to see the sites outside of the property as well. El Yunque Rainforest is a five minute drive away, Old San Juan is only about 40 minutes away. Laguna Grande, one of only five bioluminescent bays in the entire world, is nearby for an evening excursion, the beautiful islands of Culebra and Vieques are easy day trips as well. (See map above for location of the villa and locations of these places.)
