Rock Holme -this is a private oceanfront house set on a point with views of Bass Harbor and outer islands. It has a large deck with chaise chairs, dining furniture, and large gas barbecue grill. The beach is accessible from the front yard and through a short woods path. The beach after a walk through the woods has large stones to sunbath on, and picnic on and an island that appears at low tide. There is some beach sand that occurs on our beach and a nice soft sand public beach at low tide within walking distance. The front beach is ideal to launch kayaks from and to beach comb. There are three bedrooms. The front master bedroom with queen bed overlooks the water. The other queen bedroom overlooks the yard with a side window facing the water. There is a smaller bedroom with a twin bed in between. The bathroom upstairs is split into two, inner bathroom with shower, toilet and sink, outer with sink, mirror, and linen/ medicine cabinets. The front room downstairs overlooking the water has dining area/ combination living room, with the deck accessible from sliding glass door on front and door on side. There is a family room in back with cable,tv, wireless internet, netflix, seats 4 comfortably. House has older wooden furniture with charm, modern pieces, and nice artwork and decorative features throughout. The kitchen is fully stocked with a small bathroom next to family room. We have gotten many compliments on the charm of this house, with many returning guests yearly. We are constantly making upgrades.

This has been our family residence since 1943.
This was my parents' property. If it had not been for this property I may never have settled in the beautiful state of Maine. Even during the hottest of summer weather, it is usually very pleasant on the water here.
I have summered here all my life. My family came here every August from Long Island, New York. I remember the excitement arriving every summer, swimming at Long Pond, eating lobster, going to Jordan Pond, and hiking throughout Acadia's trails with my family and other relatives. Nice place to relax, unwind, smell the salt air, and pines. We arrived and immediately ran down to the beach to explore.
My husband and 14 year old spent a week here, our first visit to Acadia. The pictures just do not do this jewel of a home justice. What an enchanting place. Beautifully remodeling of this 1903 family home, complete with evidence of family love and nurturing, where you can look in every nook and cranny and find the owners' personal touches providing everything anyone could ever need or want. Waking up in the huge master bedroom with the view of the harbor made me feel like I never wanted to leave the room. A incredibly well appointed kitchen also with every item you could ever want or need. The great room leading out to the spacious deck was heavenly. And let's not forget the grounds. Front back and sides all lsndscaped beautifully. The care taken in this property totally exceeded my expectations. Oh- and the bookshelves! I wanted to read every book in the house! I not only loved the house, but felt a closeness with the family that owns it. Just the way they have everything as I would in my own home and the added details that they took care in providing to make it a comfortable and relaxing vacation made this one of the best rental experiences ever.
A word of caution - this is a home that you do not want to treat thoughtlessly - if you do not take care, it would be a terrible shame to see this home "trashed". It is a pristine jewel and we tried to care for it as if it were our own.
As for the location, we loved being on the quiet side of the island, driving around was part of the fun. I would only say the only complaint I have about our vacation was that if we came back i would have to buy my own lobsters and cook them myself. I could not find a hard shelled lobster (so late in the season I suppose- we learned a great deal about the lobster trade, having done two tours) and I felt the restaurants were overpriced. To boot, I often do buy my own lobsters, and I really questioned the how they pass off chicken lobsters as pound and 1/2s. Other than that, everything we did, from relaxing at the house to all the adventures around the island, made this a great vacation! Thank you Reine and Bill and the rest of your family for sharing your home with us!!! Laura and Kevin
We loved our vacation at this comfortable cottage. What an amazing location! The view is incredible, and we enjoyed watching the lobster boats going in and out of Bass Harbor. Our kids loved playing on the rocky shore. We like to cook, and the kitchen is well stocked, including all the tools needed for lobster! The owner was extremely helpful in providing information and tips about the house and things to do in the area. We liked being on the quiet side of the island, and we enjoyed exploring the nearby towns of Bass Harbor and Southwest Harbor, as well as Bar Harbor on the other side of the island.
My husband and I spent 9 nights at this cottage in August 2013. We loved that we were situated on the water and could watch lobster boats and sailboats coming in and out of the harbor. At the same time, we appreciated the privacy that some pine trees gave us. We kept a kayak on the front lawn and carried it just a few short steps to the water to launch it. A short path leads to additional ocean frontage where you find big rocks suitable for climbing over, or sunbathing/relaxing on. We never went to a restaurant for dinner because we couldn’t imagine finding a better waterfront view.
The cottage is kept meticulously clean, the kitchen is fully equipped, the furnishings are comfortable, and the beds and bedding are up-to-date and comfortable.
We appreciated not being locked into a Saturday-to-Saturday rental, which is what the real estate brokered rentals require. Because of the owner’s flexibility and willingness to work with us, we were able to customize the length of our stay.
This cottage has been owned by the same family for many years. You can sense the happy memories that have been made here over the years. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to make our own happy memories here as well.
My husband and I, our daughter and grandchildren 3 and 5, had a delightful stay at the cottage, which is clean and well-furnished. Our grandchildren absolutely adored climbing over the rocks along the shore, spent hours imagining themselves in pirate ships. What a lovely place, and easy access to hiking in Acadia. Loved our week there. Even saw a golden eagle. We'd come back in a flash.
My husband and I spent two weeks at this cozy, spacious house in August. We had friends visit one weekend so we had up to 4 people in the house. I would highly recommend this house to any group ranging from 2 to 6 adults. It was very clean and had all the amenities of home (full kitchen, outdoor grill, comfortable bed) plus the benefits of cottage living (private beach, large deck and outdoor fire pit overlooking bass harbor). We only had one rain day during our time there but we spent that entire day at the house playing games, reading books, and watching the boats travel the bay- very relaxing!! We managed to stay away from the TV for the first 8 days but finally gave in on day 9 and watched the news and the house has Netflix so we watched a movie one evening too.
We were primarily there to hike and we drove to our hiking destinations each day but there is an Island Hopper bus stop right at the end of the street that can take you anywhere on the island.
The owner was there when we arrived to greet us and show us the house. I see other comments about that experience but we personally liked that attention. She gave us great recommendations on things to do, restaurants, etc and was promptly on her way. We didn't find it imposing.
Again I would highly recommend MDI as a vacation destination and this house as a home for your time there. We already have our 2013 weeks booked!!
My husband and, I along with another couple, really enjoyed our stay here. This cabin was true to the Maine lifestyle and was everything we were looking for in a cabin. It was in a perfect, quiet, secluded area with our own private oceanfront access. Our only issue was that the owner made us arrive there at a certain time to pick up the key, and we could not leave until the house was inspected. Had I know this before I booked and paid in full, we could have planned accordingly because we had to drive all the way from Portland which was a 3 hour drive. Unfortunately, because of that we did not get to do all the things we wanted. Even with the inconvenience of having to meet with the owner on arrival and departure, I would still recommend this cabin to a friend.
