Why Joseph Weihs chose Cape Cod

Location location location! We have been vacationing in the Eastham area for some years and fell in love with the beaches and nature. This cottage was just at the right spot to access the beaches as well as provide a calm retreat with the pond.

What makes this cottage unique

The pond and the location: Lovely pond views from the cottage and easy access to both bay and ocean beaches.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful stay at our little cabin in the woods! It is in a perfect location, and is well stocked. We loved feeling like we were in a treehouse as we watched the birds go in and out of the trees.

The cottage is located close to the Cape Cod Rail Trail:

The Cape Cod Rail Trail (CCRT) is a paved bikeway that runs 25 miles from South Dennis to Wellfleet. The terrain is relatively flat with some minor grades in certain sections in the Lower / Outer Cape areas, specifically Orleans and Wellfleet. It easily offers the greatest variety in scenery and natural landscapes of all the regional bike paths.

The trail stretches from Route 134 all the way to Lecount Hollow Road in South Wellfleet. The name stems from an old railroad right of way it follows, which transported passengers and freight to Cape Cod in the early 1800s until around 1960. The CCRT is managed by the MA Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR). It passes by many local points of interest and several areas with lakes suitable for swimming / picnicing, including Nickerson State Park in Brewster.

Continuously monitored by local police bike patrols, this paved path is a safe and enjoyable way to spend a Cape Cod summer day. Traveling through the towns of Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet, the smoothly-paved surface (akin to gravel asphalt) makes the CCRT ideal for cyclists, walkers, inline skaters and runners. Bicycle and rollerblade rentals are also available at various bike shops conveniently located right along the trail in Dennis, Brewster, Orleans and Wellfleet.

Cozy Stay during Wind and Rain

  • 5 of 5

As luck would have it, we were on the Cape while it experienced the effects of tropical storm Jose -- strong wind, rain, high tide right up to the base of the dunes, and no direct sun. However, Cabin #3 of Nauget Haven was sturdy, cozy, well-equipped and we felt safe. We used the quieter moments to explore the bird sanctuary museum, Wellfleet, Provincetown, and twice enjoyed excellent meals at the Wicked Oyster in Wellfleet -- which offers, among other dishes, wonderful scallops. We left after five nights without being disappointed, having enjoyed our 8th or 9th visit to the Cape since 1943.

Great little cottage

  • 5 of 5

Nauset Haven #3 was just as described in the listing... while it was small, it served as a great home base for our family vacation. My son fished every day from the dock or from one of the 3 rowboats, we enjoyed floating in the pond, and chatting with other families as we enjoyed the lake. The location was perfect for exploring the Cape Cod National Sea Shore... for a $60 pass we enjoyed beaching it at Coast Guard Beach, Marconi Beach, Head of the Meadow, Nauset Light, and Herring Cove... make sure you check out the "Calendar" on the national park service website, we enjoyed some free family activities--- especially the camp fire at Nauset Light Beach. We enjoyed day trips to Provincetown (our favorite place). We had PeaPod deliver groceries for the week--- mostly for breakfast and provisions for beach lunches--- highly recommend doing this! I enjoyed spending much needed down time on the hammock with a good book. The owner was very receptive to questions/concerns... and even checked in on Saturday afternoon to walk us through the WiFi set up as his home monitor alerted him to the fact that it wasn't working as it should be. We were very lucky to have beautiful weather the entire time we were in Nauset Haven and enjoyed having this little cottage as our home base for the week.

Location was beautiful, well-maintained, outside porch lovely, Pond was great swimming

  • 3 of 5

This is a lovely little place, but the emphasis is on little. The bunk beds work for children or the futon for an adult- size but then there is no place to sit inside other than the four chairs at a small table and one other chair. We found it difficult to sit and read in the evening comfortably with good lighting or to get cozy on a rainy day. The full bed is comfortable but feels small for large people used to a queen size. Kitchen is galley type with no storage space. The Wi-Fi worked well and we did not use the televisions at all. Our outside picnic table was 5 feet from the picnic table of the cottage next door.Because of its lovely porch and accessibility to the pond, these limitations may not bother all but one should be aware of them in this choice which we are mixed on considering again.

Cute little cabin

  • 4 of 5

The cabin was very cute - and small. The cottage is overlooking Minister's Pond - so that sitting out on the deck in the mornings and evening is very pretty. But it is very noisy - the traffic from Rte 6 (main thoroughfare) is ever-present and didn't allow for a relaxed experience.

The house has a master bedroom, a second bedroom, and a futon. The second bedroom has bunk beds - so that it didn't work for adults. The futon was workable. The house has several sensor-lights which activate - and that's really great except for the one in the LR near the futon.

The bathroom is very small and so is the shower. There is one small shelf for toiletries.

Joseph was very nice, helpful, and accommodating. We didn't get one email prior to our arrival but Joseph and HomeAway were able to help us.

The location is pretty good - under 10 min to Nauset Light Beach. Signage to find the entrance for the group of cottages was not great.

There are multiple cottages very close together. There was minimal noise - but there was some. Our neighbors were very generous offering us the use of their grill since we didn't anticipate needing charcoal and lighter fluid.

Overall - for our purposes, it was nice but didn't quite fit. I hope that future renters find a better fit.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying at our cottage! We plan to replace the bunk beds with a futon bed at the end of this summer - some kids love them! As for the sensor light near the futon, thanks for advising about it. We will relocate it to a better spot so that it doesn't bother people in the living room area.
