About Ken

I have enjoyed the Provincetown area for 25 years and for the past 9 years owned and rented my vacation home in Provincetown with many repeat guests and all 5 star reviews. In 2014 I sold that home and purchased the Captain John Hughes house. I look forward to welcoming my guests here in bucolic N. Truro with the same level of comfort, luxury, and local knowledge.

Ken purchased this house in 2014

Why Ken chose Cape Cod

When the chance to buy one of the oldest homes on the Cape came up last year, given all its original detail and fantastic history I could not resist. Built by a British born sea captain who married in 1776, the house descended down through his family and is a piece of Truro history! There was his grandson, Hezekiah Hughes - a Civil War veteran/Grand Mason who etched his name in a window pane upstairs, and later his son-in-law William Young,Treasurer of Seamens Bank (and another Mason), who helped found the Provincetown Art Association and hosted every famous Ptown artist on the grounds in 1914. Now as only the 3rd owner, I've had the chance to sensitively update aspects of the house while keeping all the wonderful historic charm. Lastly, I've been able to gut-renovate the nearby guest cottage, vaulting the ceiling, adding a skylight, and installing brand new kitchenette. So if you need more than 4 beds and 2 baths, the guest cottage can be rented as well (see listing # 3886181.)

What makes this house unique

Old houses can feel small but not this one. With its open living and dining room and adjacent rear patio, this house is wonderful for entertaining. And in summer there is no place nicer than the large screened in sunroom with 2 walls of french doors open to the breezes. The adjacent kitchen has 2 Miele ovens, a warming drawer, dishwasher, and super sized fridge with ice maker to cook for a crowd. And the massive 8 burner Weber grill out back doesn't hurt either!

The N. Truro location is ideal. Enjoy the space, peace, and quiet of a country-like setting but still be 10 minutes from the excitement of Provincetown! Don't feel like heading into town? No worries there's a convenience/liquor store (Salty Market), a cafe, a boutique chocolate shop, post office, and Truro Vineyards all an easy walk, not to mention Cold Storage beach!

Please note the Captain John Hughes House, while fully equipped with every modern convenience, is a true antique from 1740 with all the associated eccentricities. These include narrow and low doorways, uneven & slanted floors in some rooms, funky closets, steep ladder style staircase to upstairs, sloping upper level ceilings, etc. Many guests will find all of that delightful (I certainly do!) but those wanting new construction may want to explore other options.

Everything we hoped for and more!

  • 5 of 5

The Captain Hughes house is fantastic. Our extended family stayed for a week, enjoyed all sorts of weather (the house was comfortable through it all), and especially appreciated the character and history of the house. The kitchen is fully stocked with every sort of utensil you might need. We grilled lobster on the outside grill, dined both indoors around the big dining table and out on the lovely patio. We had rich rambling discussions long into the night in the ample living room and the cheerful sun room. Each bedroom has its own special character. The front lawn is ample for outdoor games, the back is landscaped and perfect for reading or a game of frisbee in the shade. A special bonus is the sweet cottage on the property. Our New York friends were able to join us for the weekend. The house is a short stroll to nearby markets, restaurants and Cold Storage Beach on the bay. Just a bit further is Head of the Meadow Beach on the ocean. The house is a destination in itself. That it's on the Cape makes you want to stay forever. We will be back.

Great Location -- Beautiful Home -- Great Outdoor Space -- Well Stocked Kitchen

  • 5 of 5

We've rented in Truro for 12+ years. This house exceeded all expectations. The kitchen is fully-stocked with chef-quality cookware (a first for us) with all new appliances. The cutting knives are actually sharp! All 4 beds were extremely comfortable; no bad backaches from stays in this house! Plenty of towels (both bath and beach)! The outdoor space is great and the big fenced in yard which was a must with our two dogs. My husband loved cooking on the brand new Weber gas grill! The house only has one indoor shower. The 2nd floor bathroom only has a bathtub; no shower. However, the outdoor shower made up for the lack on two indoor showers. You cannot beat the location. Cold Storage Beach is in walking distance. Head of the Meadow is a short drive or bike ride. The Truro Vineyards/South Hollow Distillery is less than a 1/2 mile down the street. Even though the house is on 6A you can't really hear the noise from inside the house or in the backyard. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

It could not have been more perfect.

  • 5 of 5

The house is old and wonderful, slightly warped floors, steep stairs with a "rope bannister", nice light through the windows in every room, plenty of rooms for guests, plenty of linens. The kitchen has every modern appliance and tool I know of and more that I have no idea how to use. For people who like to entertain, it is wonderful. Big tables inside and outside. Big grille. As to location, also great - 30 minute bike ride into Provincetown, 12.5 mile bike ride to Wellfleet beach, a short walk to local Truro beach, 5 minute walk to the local vineyard or convenience store. Quiet, comfortable, welcoming, homey. We have already inquired about reserving it next year.

Outstanding Home and Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

This property is located perfectly between Provincetown and the unique outdoor world that is Cape Cod - the National Seashore and Cape Cod Bay. The home is beautifully decorated and perfect for those who love to cook (includes a fully outfitted kitchen and chef appliances). It is also comfortable and peaceful delivering on things that make for a perfect vacation. The Owner is a pleasure to work with.

Perfect Cape house retreat

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a long weekend to celebrate my wife's birthday with our three young children. It was an amazing weekend -- peaceful serene beach <5 min drive away from house. We loved going to the vinyard for lunch and drinks, just a short walk down the street. The house is amazing and a rare blend of modern amenities (kitchen is fully stocked and the monster weber grill is fantastic!), and the lovingly maintained house has 1700s charm and character.

So many great things!

  • 5 of 5

The wonderful things about this property were the kitchen and Ken! We cooked many meals and found the kitchen to be very well equipped - everything you could possibly need was there - with great appliances and plenty of space for multiple chefs! The sun room off the kitchen was a great place to start the day, with the sun streaming in. Ken was incredibly responsive to our questions and even returned an item we had left behind. The location of this house is perfect. The Truro beaches are the absolute best and having the back parking permit was an ideal way to experience every single one of them. There were great hikes in the area and even the walk around the road across the street overlooking the bay beach was stunning. Provincetown was an easy ten minute drive away and Wellfleet another easy destination. Ken clearly takes pride in owning such an historic house and we appreciated it!
