About the property

Hale Kakahi sleeps 6 guests and provides ocean views from almost every room. 3 acres give you privacy and lots of room to explore!

Entering the Hale Kakahi grounds, you travel down a long drive surrounded by plumeria, monkeypod, banana, and palm trees until you reach the elegant two-story home. The front door opens to the foyer and Great Room, where you are overwhelmed by the spectacular ocean view through floor-to-ceiling windows and across a broad lanai that extends across the entire front of the house.

The interior is a wood-lover's dream with floors, walls, ceilings, counters and cabinets built from nine exotic woods, including koa, mango, Spanish cedar and purple heart. In addition to the view, the Great Room offers a comfortable place to visit and relax, with good reading lights and a TV/DVD for evening entertainment.

The kitchen is well equipped with large and small appliances and plenty of prep, cook, and serving ware. The cooktop/breakfast bar countertop is made from a single piece of monkeypod wood. You'll eat many meals on the lanai, and for indoor dining the travertine marble table in the dining area seats six.

A small office off the Great Room leads to the master bedroom. The bed is a California King, and the room has its own TV and DVD player. The bedroom has an en suite bath with a walk-in shower, Jacuzzi bathtub/spa, and double vanity. The entire house has ceiling fans and lots of floor-to-ceiling windows to keep you comfortable in our temperate climate. An estate wouldn't be complete without a pool and the 30-foot lap pool is just outside the master bedroom.

There are also two suites on the lower level of the home, which provide accommodations for up to four more guests. GUESTS WITH SMALL KIDS PLEASE TAKE NOTE: These suites do not connect to the main part of the house upstairs - you must walk outside and around to the back of the home to access them via their own private entrances. This works great for older or very independent children, however.

The Akahi Suite consists of a main bedroom, adjacent bedroom/sitting room, and private bath. The bedroom has a firm king bed. The adjacent sitting room is equipped with conveniences including a Queen bed - this suite is the best option for young children who need to be close to parents. There's a TV, DVD player, radio/CD and telephone. Both rooms have ocean views and the full bath has a tub shower.

The smaller Elua Suite has the same great ocean view as the Akahi Suite, with a queen bed and a full bath with stall shower. Guests in the Akahi and Elua suites can enjoy their morning coffee on the private lower-level lanai. In the separate Garage building there is also a Billiard's Room for guests to use, so bring your best aim!

Hawaiian Beaches is a quiet residential neighborhood about 20 miles south of historic Hilo town on Hawaii Island. It's a laid back and inviting area where neighbors are out walking most days. The shops and restaurants of Pahoa Village are 10 minutes away. Drive 15 minutes south to Kapoho where you can swim in a thermally heated hot pond or snorkel in protected reefs. See recent lava flows from the Kilauea Volcano at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, less than an hour away.

Grand but sad

We were very excited to rent this home but upon arrival we quickly became dismayed so we contacted the property manager to see what we could remedy. I'll list out all of the items we found noteworthy but first would like to say that the property manager for this home was super great to work with despite the negative items. He is very aware of the issues of the property but since he is not the owner, he is limited in his ability to change things.

Pro's - This is on a gorgeous piece of property with cliffside ocean views. Very large, secluded lot with a tropical feel. Home is very large and for 2 couples it afforded the privacy and gave us the space that we were looking for. Kitchen was large and contained almost everything we needed. Outdoor grill has seen quite a bit of wear but was functional. We prepared and ate many meals during our stay. There is a laundry room on the lower floor that has new large load washer and dryer. Both upper and lower lanai's were spacious and gave us fantastic views of the ocean. The location allowed us to explore everything we wanted to see on the east side of the island with reasonable driving distances to the lava flow and also the area above and around Hilo.

The cocqui frogs are very loud as are the birds but we found this pleasurable. There are also many toads that come out to the lawn at night which we enjoyed.

We were there during whale season and viewed whales from the home. Some were fairly close to the shore which was exciting!

Con's - The home was probably once a grand place but is now in great need of TLC. We felt like we were camping which is not the experience we were looking for. There is no AC here which is fine with us since Hawaii has great trade winds much of the time. As other past guests have noted, many of the large sliding doors are unable to be opened and those that do open have rotted wood tracks that are no longer functioning. Screens on many of these doors are torn. Locks on the upper and lower sliding doors are very difficult to open and close. When we arrived, all bedding and cushions on lower floor contained a musty smell. Shower curtain liner was moldy. Granted, this is an oceanfront property in the jungle area and has high humidity but with some attention, could be updated to deal with these issues. Allergic people beware! Management met our requests to freshen up the home so we stayed. All in all, we did enjoy ourselves. It is sad that this property is not getting the attention it needs.

Roaches!!! Read before you book!

This is really sad. This property is beautiful, but poorly maintained. I tried so hard to like this home, but decided to leave earlier than what we paid for because we could not stand the roaches. When we walked in it was humid and hot. I called the management to find out where the AC is, but they never called back. I found an email reply they sent that I could not get because this property does not have WiFi. So after 3-4 hours of all the windows opened it cooled down; however, all the bugs started to fly in at night because the sliding doors to the lanai does not have screens. its an island so we decided to "understand" even if it doesn't have AC. However, the understanding stopped when we encountered our first roach in the condiment/spices cabinet. We decided not to use any of it. The second roach encounter happened when we opened the cabinet under the sink to find sponges to wash the plates. At this point, we decided not to use any of the dinnerware and bought paper plates, cups, forks, make the story short, we found at least 3 roaches a day. You think you can get use to it, but you just can't, it was bigger than my finger!!!! I understand if it were other insects, but roaches are different story.

The second issue was the strong mildew odor downstairs. There are previous reviews submitting the issue, but I was hoping they fixed it, but they did not. The odor is on the towel, sheets, linens....The kids had hard time falling asleep because of the smell downstairs.

4. We did not use the pool because the water was cloudy and not clear. Would not let kids to go in....water was questionable

Its such a beautiful property....but so sad its poorly maintained. If you are the owner of this house, please change the management company...I really wanted to leave a good review, but the management did not even respond to my email when we checked out 2 days earlier than what we paid for....its been 4 days since we left, but still no response. I find that very unprofessional.

Spring break stay, blown away by this home

This home was better than I was hoping! In fact, after walking through the front door my husband high-fived me. Beautiful woodwork throughout the home. Master bedroom has beautiful natural light. We would definitely book another stay at this home, and highly recommend it to others.

I stayed here with my son and daughter in law The lay out of the house provided for privacy but also allowed together time. The grounds are beautiful we only stayed a week I wish I had longer. The house is nicely located close to hot springs and black sand beach we were there to attend my other sons wedding This was the perfect spot

Location is incredible, large lot and very private. Ocean sound at night is ominous, I enjoyed the loud crashing sound, in fact slept with the door open to bring it in. The house is an interesting design, open floor plan on top with a huge master suite. The rest of the bedrooms are downstairs and disconnected from the main house, acccess is from outside with an outside staircase. Only reason to be downstairs is to be in bed since you are so far away form the rest of the house. The sizee of the master is crazy big which of course is nice if you're in the master but if you're sharing the house it could be tough to divy up the sleeping arrangements. The downstairs roomss were a bit moldy, not so much that it was overpowering but if you're sensitive to that odor be aware. I suspect it's pretty common on this side of the island what with the large amounts of rain.

All said, it's a very nice house in a great location and is completely private.

Our stay at Hale Kakahi was absolutely wonderful!! More beautiful than I could ever have imagined. The view of the grounds and the ocean from the balcony was simply breathtaking.

I went to Hawaii to celebrate my 60th birthday and was not disappointed in Hale Kakahi. Sharene and Harrison were awesome hosts and excellent guides for our side trips. Hale Kakahi is very big and spacious, comfortable, and relaxing. The first turn into the driveway was unbelievable! Lush and green everywhere!! I would very highly reccomend a vacation here for an unforgetable vacation of a lifetime.
