About Flora Sanchez

My husband Sam and I were both born and raised in Albuquerque. We bought this 8 acre property in 1982. We built our home and raised our two children here. Eventually we deeded an acre to each of the children; they built their homes here and are raising our grandkids next door. Friends and family call it 'the Sanchez village'. Over time we've added several structures to the estate, most recently the recreation building (which houses the Casita along with Sam's wood shop, the RV garage, and a small gym) and the family capilla or chapel. We raise grass hay, Boer goats and Dolly Llama on the back pasture, an open space that attracts hundreds of cranes and geese here in the winter. A small farmer coop plants organic vegetables and will soon begin building a hoop house to extend the growing season.

Flora Sanchez purchased this apartment in 1982

Why Flora Sanchez chose New Mexico

Sam and I are both retired and have enjoyed sharing our guest room with friends and family. After our granddaughter moved into her own home we converted her transition living space to a rental and look forward to welcoming new friends to this place.

What makes this apartment unique

Everyone who visits this property comments about how beautiful and quiet it is. The property's east boundary is a cottonwood forest that borders the Rio Grande. A 1/4 mi walk will take you to the banks of the Rio Grande River where you can enjoy the wildlife, especially birds being drawn to the Valle del Oro National Wildlife Refuge directly across the river. Walking trails connect you to three open space properties within 1 mile radius, including the historic Gutierrez Hubbell House History and Cultural Center just 1/4 mi south. We are right on the original Route 66.

When ready to see more of the city an easy 7 mi drive will take you to downtown ABQ and Old Town. Balloon Fiesta Park is just another 7 mi north. Santa Fe is a quick one hour's drive as is Acoma (Sky City) Pueblo. At the end of a long day of sightseeing you'll enjoy returning to your quiet, restful abode for a soak in the hot tub, a moonlight swim, or just a cup of coffee on your own patio.

The perfect hideaway

  • 5 of 5

This Casita was the perfect place for us! A last minute trip to see the balloon fiesta and really didn't think I would find a hotel. (I didn't because the prices were to high) A friend told me to look on VRBO and I found this gem, tucked in the South Valley down a private drive. This perfectly groomed property was a delight to our eyes. Every need was taken care of by Sam and Flora the nicest people you would ever want to meet. I highly recommend this place.

Nicest Owners

  • 5 of 5

Flora was so quick to respond to all my inquiries about the area and local transportation. At the last minute I had a death in my family and was unable to go. She took the time to find another renter and without asking refunded my money . So nice to have this human touch in the seemingly impersonal world of travel these days. I hope to be able to stay at this idyllic location in the future .

Cute, clean and comfortable!

  • 5 of 5

Sam and Flora were friendly and gracious. Their second floor apartment was thoughtfully laid out to make the most of the area and was appointed nicely. I was there alone while my husband worked during the day and I felt safe and comfortable. The grounds are pretty and fun to explore. If work takes us to Albuquerque again, we will definitely look them up. Highly recommend! Thank you, Sam and Flora!

44th Anniversary getaway

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time at our Casita. It was close enough to town for all the activities but out in the country for privacy. Quaint, clean and cozy. The owners were very warm and friendly and had alot of helpful recommendations. We will definitely recommend Casita de Colores.

Quiet Historic Area

  • 5 of 5

We spent two nights here. We found Flora and Sam to be welcoming, generous with local information and care regarding our comfort and access. The unit is comfortable, and the location is in an interesting part of the area and of the country. If you are interested, Sam will regale you with tales of his family and their history in the area. Right on the Rio, with access to the bosque and other open space areas nearby. In a quiet rural area, but close to town.

quiet and relaxing retreat

Located off the beaten path, but near enough to ABQ. Casita is exactly as presented. Quiet, peaceful and relaxing. Would stay here again!
